Best Single Player FPS Experience on PC?

Halo would not even make top ten on PC even if included.

Half LIfe would be my pick.

Call of Duty is pretty fun also, its almost a rail shooter but its a real blast the first time.

Thief II as well, if that counts.

Half-Life 2 is about to take over next week, though (at least, I'm hoping so).

I didnt include thief 2 because, well you know, its not "really" an fps, but yea, i would put it right after deus ex on my list :)

System Shock 2 is a little too dated graphically now, it maybe hard to get into. Same goes for Thief 2.

Deus Ex still rocks though, and you need to play it.

You can also score HL Source w/ HL2 next week, well the 16th or whatever.

If you consider the Thief series, the 3rd is very true to the originals, unlike DX2, which killed my inner child.

It actually isn't...

While the characters and weapons look awful, the actual environments still look very nice today. With 6x AA and 16x AF at 60 fps, it ends up feeling pretty decent.

PLus you can update the models.

I played through it last year, sans upgrade, and had no problems getting scared shitless.

Half-Life and coming up soon: Half-Life 2

I wouldn't count Halo as one of the best Single Player FPS experiences on PC.

Edit: There are some single-player fps that I haven't played yet, so that list could change.

Deus Ex. Nothing can compare to infiltrating VersaCorp (I think that's the name) in Hong Kong not once, but twice.

That whole city rocked so hard in the game! Sucks the sequel wasn't really the same :(

Ignoring System Shock 2 and Deus Ex (because they are first person rpg imo) then I would say...

Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Currently playing Doom 3, okay but hardly a masterpiece

I would...

My top 5 FPS titles are (in order)...

System Shock 2
Deus Ex
Thief II
Halo
Half-Life

Honestly, if you take out the top 3 (which are borderline FPS titles), it becomes much more difficult to choose...

I truly do not believe that there are a whole lot of TRUE CLASSICS in the genre.

Then you didn't play Hexen enough.

No, I own Hexen, Hexen-Deathkings, and Hexen II (though not the H2 add-on).

They were good (possibly even great) games, but I don't really consider them classics. I've always found Raven games to be rather...generic. They just never leave great impressions on me. Heretic II might be my favorite of the bunch, though (but that isn't an FPS).

Duke 3D, on the other hand, I would consider a classic. It doesn't impress today, but it was incredible back when it was released...

What I don't get is that there are texture pack upgrades for Deus Ex 2 from different groups which make it look much, much better than the original release but hardly any fan work has been done with System Shock 2. I really don't get that at all because Deus Ex 2 is a much more recent game and doesn't need the upgrade nearly as much but even more importantly, SS2 is 10x the game Deus Ex 2 is.

Doesn't make any sense to me. :(

Ah-ah-ah! There was no Hexen 2, just like there was no Judge Dredd film.

Boy, did Raven go downhill. But hey, we'll always have Hexen, right guys?

Well, there was a minor texture update made. Basically, ALL monitors, signs, and other small details were remade in high resolution. It REALLLY helps out the visuals a lot. When you approach a switch, sign, or anything similar and see a really high resolution image...the surrounding textures are no longer a big problem (not that they look awful anyways).

Hey, I actually enjoyed Hexen 2. :( Perhaps it was due to the fact that I played it on my shiny new 3D card, but still...

Anyone know where I can get System Shock 2? Does any store carry it anymore or should I just buy it off of ebay?

Some sites claim it's legal to download as abondonware (meaning no publisher is actively putting it on store shelves) but I'm not sure if they're technically right about it from a legal perspective.

Anyway I like SS2, Deus Ex, and Half-Life for single player games. The NOLF games were good too.

From the early reviews, I'll be surprised if HL2 doesn't trash everything.

I always thought Hexen was a lot of fun as well. Played through it again recently with the enhancements posted in that Doom thread from a few weeks ago (jHexen, OGG soundtrack), and it's as good as I remember.

Halo
Thief series
Doom 2
NOLF1

Hmmmm, that's about it. Once multiplayer took off, it seems like most companies gave up on developing competent one-player modes. Half Life exists in my mind only as a milestone. Doesn't seem like there is really anything impressive about it, today.

I kind of agree here. Im intrested in playing again with HL source though.

With that said, I still think the cleanup crew AI is better than 98% of FPS even today.

What? No Shogo love??!!!

Also:

Half Life (Compelling story, just awesome)
Shogo (Always been an anime and manga-fan. Great!)
Rise of the Triad (mad crazy game! :D)

And that would be about it then...

Half-Life
No One Lives Forever 1
No One Lives Forever 2
Call of Duty
Deus Ex

If I had to pick one it would be Deus Ex, pure excellence

TBH Halo is not really that good, at 85% game max.

I would say

Half Life (So immersive in story atmosphere and AI plus awsome scripted events)

Deus Ex (Only got round to playing it a couple of years ago and it still ranks as one of the most amazing game experiences i've ever had. Too bad that No. 2 sucked, damn those small environments. Being given a target of sorts and then being left to infiltrate it in your own way is so much fun, plus all the upgrades and the Amazing story twist WOW)

No One Lives Forevers hands down.

Some great PC FPS games, but NOLF takes the top spot. NOLF 2 is good too but not as good as the original.
