Bets on the next Hollywood Anime adaptation?

I don't really "want" any but Cowboy Bebop is the obvious choice. There's really no need to whitewash any of the main characters and there's even whether organized crime is more triad or yakuza which adds the opportunity for China pandering. I think it's a terrible idea because I think any of these will probably be awful but it's the most obvious one.

Big O would also be up there except America doesn't really get Japanese-style giant robots so I'm skeptical they could pull it off. Same reason I don't think Gundam would work well.

I haven't actually finished it but 91 days seems like it would be fairly easy to adapt.

A Baccano adaptation is something that NEEDS to happen.

Oh actually I forgot about this but hmmm

On the one hand this is actually probably the thing that could be carried over the best with the right director

On the other hand, the sorts of absurd violence combined with the crazy regeneration visuals might look terrible in live action and that's a pretty key element of Baccano!.

Hamtaro.

You have a bunch of talking CG hamsters voiced by B-List celebs who jump around, make pop culture references and fart. They go to the real world some how and have to deal with some failing SNL alumnus's forced romantic interest while simultaneously trying to save the day from some mean greedy evil cardboard cutout. One of the hamsters isn't a team player but learns the value of teamwork at the end. Then it ends with whatever safe pop number that soccer moms in suburban Milwaukee can dance to. Also, it needs to have an ending teaser for a sequel taking place in the same shared universe with, I dunno, Keroppi or some shit.

If we're making a trainwreck, then we're making a BLAZING trainwreck.

We kinda already have boardwalk empire. Granted 91 days isn't 1:1, but there is no shortage of that kind of movie in Hollywood

I won't accept Amuro Ray without his proper Canadian accent

Anyone know for what reason the creator decided to make Amuro Ray from Prince Rupert, BC? As someone who was born there it's pretty baffling, legit a tiny shit hole in the middle of no where. There should be a statue of Amuro Ray in that town, because that is literally the coolest thing about it. Also do they go into his birth in the manga? I only read 3 volumes of Origins.

They should make a K-On adaptation but change high school setting to college.

Would be a fun family movie about love for music and fun.

Sleggar would be the only proper American in the entire team now that I think of it.

Also needs to be Matthew Mconaghuey

Honestly, I think the only roles that need star power would be Char, Bright, the Zabi family and some of the other minor yet older characters, like Sleggar and Ramba Ral. Most of the White Base crew would benefit from being played by mostly unknown young actors.

You can't do Black Lagoon with a low budget unless you want it to look like a schlocky 80s B-action movie. Which I suppose wouldn't really be against the soul of the series, in a way, but it wouldn't do it any favors these days.

Hmm... I think it can be done in Logan's budget range: ~90 mil-ish. While perfect blue can be done at Black Swan's budget: ~20-30 mil-ish. Speaking of...
For the second: Black Swan already exists.

True. He owns the rights to this movie. He's been inserting shots of it in his various films. But he just needs to go ahead and shoot the damn thing. I know he wants to.

Good luck there lol.
Weren't they also adapting Noir a few years back? That could have been cool.

Oh the direction the Starz series was going was super frustrating and I'm glad it eventually turned out to be vaporware. Like the setting was being changed up, the bad guys were being changed to Muslim terrorists, there was going to be a lot of focus on a new original male main character... You can see a little about what was planned here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-08-13/live-action-noir-character-descriptions-listed

I remember thinking this was super badass when I saw it on Cinemax in like 1994.

I don't want to ruin it by going back. Same with The Guyver.

Wasn't Space trying to adapt Witch Hunter Robin into a live action show at one point like a decade ago? Could've been interesting, probably would have been a trainwreck.

Speaking of Hollywood and anime, there were talks of a Full Metal Panic! live-action some years ago with Zac Efron as Sousuke Sagara. I remember being vehemently against the idea since the series is so close to my heart and I'd rather not have the Hollywood 'taint' to its name lol. Now I wonder how the adaptation would have been like...

Still can't picture Zac as the incredibly stoic character Sousuke is though.

It's already been done overseas, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Hollywood attempts their own take on Initial D at some point.

As much as I love cowboy bebop, as a fan I'd be way too picky for my own good if a live action version was made. Bebop would need like perfect casting, music that matched the original plus all the style rolled into one.

I don't know a single director that would do Cowboy Bebop justice.

Lucky Star but they are career women.

Tina Fey as Kagami, Amy Poehler as Tsukasa, Kaitlyn Olsen as Miyuki, and Melissa McCarthy as Konata.

It's sad how the main qualifier for a Hollywood adaptation seems to be which anime has the least/no Asian people in it.

People here want faithful live action translations of their favourite anime, but anything done by Hollywood is going to get localized for an American/Worldwide audience. Might as well pick something that doesn't actually depend on Japanese culture or heritage, so you don't have to get upset when they ditch most of that.

Nah I know but it's just sad.

Gundam could actually work too, all you'd really need to do is cut out some of the weirder Tominoisms like the little kids who were always on the ship

Gundam and Macross seems like the easiest to make next after Pacific Rim and Transformer. giant robot is a thing now, adding a pilot in cockpit or fighter plane that can transform to robot seems like it's going to be easy transition for mainstream audience

I just hope whenever they tried to make it, they do it in the same vein as Edge of Tomorrow, which is taking the premise and concept, and make it their own original adaptation rather than forcing it to be the same as the anime

I agree that unless Hollywood is ready to diversify their casting choice, I'd recommend them staying in the easy-to-adapt list:

Cowboy Bebop (majority of the cast are white)
Attack on Titan (only one major Asian character, which they must cast or else they should not touch this property)
Big-O (it'll be like a giant Batman show)

Don't insult the Asian community by adapting properties which clearly have Asian lead unless you want to hire Asian actors for them. It's just rude and inconsiderate.

Macross still faces the issue of being a licensing nightmare that's prevented anything past the original from ever getting out of Japan though

Really wish Hollywood would do Full Metal Alchemist. Besides being awesome and totally translatable, they would be able to completely avoid any white washing issues lol.

oh wait, I know what I want for my holywood anime adaptation, Full Metal Panic

change the setting from high school to college and imagine it like 22 jump street with robots.

You mean JAPANESE properties whose rights get sold to America to be adapted knowing full well they will likely cast somebody White as lead. Do these Japanese companies insult the Asian community? Are they rude and inconsiderate for making money on a property they own to get broader recognition in a larger markrt?

Yes. Company's greediness is not an excuse to not consider the wider implications to the society that we live in.

I wonder how or if Millennium Actress would work.

that actually could work,
set the thing in the 80's or 90's, same story as the original and have the reporters try to discover the story of this famous 40's actress and how she went from a bright eye extra cast to a world renowned starlet to her retirement living quietly out in the LA countryside. you can even work in the earthquake and what not
. depend on who can they get to play the role of the actress, they could very went be an Oscar contender.
