Bets on the next Hollywood Anime adaptation?

OK. So why aren't these companies called out more and the sole blame being put on Hollywood doing what they normally do?

Oh boo fucking hoo, you petty ass. You have no idea if these companies are not being called out more or not, do you? To begin with, most of these companies are in Japan, which obviously requires a US subdivision for any customers to place their complaint in and if they don't have one, where are the complaints are going to go to?

Since Hollywood is the one who wants to adapt these stories, they too have responsibilities for diversity to be represented especially if they want to sell this story to the US, which has diverse population, and the world, which is even more diverse. Hollywood is also the one with more clout, more power, more access to public, which is why they have been designated target for protest.

Because at the end of the day this is about money and power and there's no way a small company in Japan can resist the offer of their property being used by Hollywood. It doesn't mean Hollywood is exempt from being tasked to be diverse.

I would love a well-done FMA (not Brotherhood, the original anime series) movie or TV series.

I would just follow the manga material, not even the original anime (which also I really like). FMA manga is the best and any screenwriter should follow its blueprint.

Japan has a thriving domestic film industry, which greatly outperforms Hollywood and other foreign films in Japan. I think that Hollywood market share is down to about a third there, less than half of where it was at its peak 15 years ago.

As such, I don't know that most Japanese moviegoers and property holders really even care what Hollywood does. They release animated films or live action adaptations of these properties themselves, starring Japanese casts and aimed at Japanese audiences. Hollywood licensing is just side money. I don't really think they have a moral obligation to care either.

Hollywood does need to start embracing more diversity, but I don't think diversity necessarily means that they can't localize foreign products for American/western audiences. I see the Power Rangers film brought up as a positive example of diversity in the other thread, but that is a remake of a localized Japanese property that ditched a lot of the Japanese stuff. Having a diverse and non-stereotyped cast is more important than sticking to the culture/location of the original product.

probably akira. evangelion has been brought up a few times but i don't see any possible way that could end up being good, even though it's my favorite anime

First of all they're not being called out, not that I think they should but they're just as responisible for partcipating and being compensated, if you think this is actual "whitewashing", which I do not.

Hollywood is Hollywood. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you can focus on other things that can bring about actual change because it's not going to happen from the top, but from the bottom up.

I'm still waiting for Ralph 1/2 ... where he's a dirt biker instead of a karate champ and instead of jusenkyo they go to a native american burial ground and Genma is a grizzly bear instead of a panda.

:P

I should stop before I give hollywood too many ideas.

But seriously though, Battle Angel IS the next one coming and after that Akira might finally get off the ground for better or worse. Beyond that ? Who knows.

I have a complex answer to this one, one that I don't think you deserve to know since you sound like a diet racist.

I don't have to accept anything. Change is made when people actually say that things are not okay like this. And that's exactly what I am doing.

You mean JAPANESE properties whose rights get sold to America to be adapted knowing full well they will likely cast somebody White as lead. Do these Japanese companies insult the Asian community? Are they rude and inconsiderate for making money on a property they own to get broader recognition in a larger markrt?

lol, I like how you're in multiple threads telling Asian Americans to sit down and shut up.

That's not what I'm doing. Adapting other countries commercial properties and localizing it for your region or market isn't whitewashing. Feel free to disagree. Casting a White person as lead is business as usual for Hollywood. A White person being in position to get cast as lead is a sympton of a much larger systemic issue that Hollywood doesn't view as an issue. If you don't address that system and trying to fix that, then you you're going to keep getting mad at the sympton.

I feel like Attack on Titan will become a choice soon. Since monster movies making a rise and that world is diverse already so they can get away with a lot of things. Just not sure if they would call it a horror or not in live action. It would look really nasty seeing a big ass cgi eating a human.
Is holywood okay with giant naked people eating normal people?

The only way I can see it happen is if they totally redesign the titan to be more monster and less human like.

They should just stop -_- It'll get butchered anyways.

I believe Cameron is already working on an adaptation of Gunnm (or battle angel alita, in english).

I sincerely hope none of them will get the luminous idea to adapt Cowboy Bebop. I wouldn't be able to handle it.

I'm honestly surprised no one has pitched a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure film yet.. It would probably be one of the only films where they feasibly could use American actors for Joseph Joestar and a few others, and be totally fine, considering it's a pretty multi-cultural series as is.

They'd ruin it by making Jotaro american though, and I really don't want Jojo to be touched by American film companies, fuck no.

Anything from the Fate series. The meltdowns would be glorious!

I think Psycho Pass could work. Space Battleship Yamato. Baccano, but that might be too chaotic.

Jotaro is half Caucasian, just like Keanu Reeves

A Battle Angle Alita movie is already hapening : http://www.slashfilm.com/michelle-rodriguez-alita-battle-angel/

I can't wait for the kerfuffle of a Hispanic actress taking a Asian actress's role~

Rosa Salazar can pass for Caucasian. I got blocked by two people on twitter after telling them Rosa is Latina.

Hollywood,Bollywood,China and Japan should co-produce the epic 3x3 Eyes manga, which is like an adult and better version of Dragon Ball.

If you want a quality live action movie that shares some of the concept of GITS, watch Avalon instead. A Japan-Poland co-productioj,directed by M.Oshi, starring a Polish actress.A basset hound appears too.

I'd love a quality TV show to take on a sports anime like Hajime no Ippo. I'd imagine quite a loose interpretation with obviously western characters but maintaining all the same story beats

Though they could probably never do the action justice. It would take some seriously skillled filmmaking to recreate those fights while maintaining some semblance of realism

Berserk. And it will be PG-13 and directed by and starring Adam Sandler.

"A behelit for meeee, a behelit for youuu, why did Griffith, pee in my shoooe, ahabbadoowee?"

Battle Angel or Akira. Everything else will be back-burnered after GitS barely pulls in $30 million for the weekend.

How do you westernize Ippo? Wouldn't they become filthy rich? Especially Takamura.

Someone like Edgar Wright would probably be the best. A Spike oriented movie done by Stahelski could end up working too.

I dunno about Wright. He's hyper kinetic style goes against the noir-ish sensibilities of CB. I guess an imagined Hollywood Cowboy Bebop will resemble the original very little.

Edgar Wright would be a far better choice for something like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Give someone like Rian Johnson or Gareth Evans a Cowboy Bebop movie.

Disclaimer: I have an irrational dislike of those adaptations and I will probably be moaning about them without ever watching them. All of them, even the existing ones. With that said...

Eatman and Trigun, please. I could do with some some slightly post-apocalyptic SciFi Western movies with hidden philosophical undertones. Which would be totally slaughtered, probably.

Or Slayers and Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. Kinda medieval-ish setting, which would be pretty easy to sell. But then again, I shudder to think what they'd do to make them work within a limited CG budget. Magic and extensive stunts just chew through money.

Maybe Irresponsible Captain Tylor? Much of it plays inside a space ship or other similarly enclosed spaces. However, this is a movie about a Captain that
ends a war without firing a single shot
while teabagging every single military force and authority figure involved. This probably doesn't sell any tickets unless they really fuck with the script.

So, no, wait, let's not.

I think any racially homogenous sailor scout movies would be dumb as fuck. If we get sailor moon someone is going to be black, and hispanic and asian.
