I got stuck watching this tonight instead of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and it is honestly the worst movie I have ever seen. Most kids shows and kids movies have some sort of adult appeal, but not Shark Boy and Lava Girl! It's the spawn of the mind of an 8-year-old. Overdone CG and scenes dedicated to making sure the 3D is put to full use attempt to cover the lack of a coherent story and fail miserably.

I can see how parents would have had fun in Spongebob or Jimmy Nuetron, but it's going to kill them to see this. Don't get suckered into seeing this!

The only cool thing about the movie was the use of 3D to show snowflakes. They looked like they were falling in the theatre. :lol

EDIT: I just read that it was based on his son's imagination. :lol

If you were lost at sea and raised by sharks, where did you get the nifty uniform?

its got charlotte. The frigidest SITC girl was also the hottest.

tedtropy

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
Did you dump your girlfriend for someone a tad younger? How on earth did you get suckered into seeing this tripe?

Also, it reminds me of that one Simpson's Halloween episode: "Stretch Dude and Clober Girllllllll"

I wish they would make something decent in 3d, I'd just like to see what it's like. But this and that other kids show are just to horrible to consider seeing.

Though it looks bad, I don't know if it rivals Battlefield Earth, because it's worst movie I ever walked into. I walked out after 45 minutes.

I don't know if you were being serious or not but for those that don't know it was spawned from the mind of an 8 year old, or close. Robert Rodriguez son Racer came up with Shark Boy and he made this for his son with little editing. It was a required movie he demanded to make from the studio when they wanted some other movies out of him.

haha, didnt see the stuff around picture, trying to avoid looking at anything for this movie

I wish my Dad would make me a 3D movie.

Anyway, this movie is for the tykes. I'm sure they'll love it.

Spy Kids 3D was such a bad movie. Even the 3D effects were horrible. After watching it, I seriously don't believe Rob has ever played a game before.

It's a shame his son didn't think of Jessica Alba Nude Girl and Christoper Walken Shark-Man 3D.

James Cameron is currently making his return to action movies, in 3D

You know, when I first heard about the movie "Spy Kids" way, wayyy before the movie ever came out, I thought it was a joke. Like something Cracked magazine or SNL would come up with. So I laughed hysterically at it. The concept is so absurd and cliched, it was hillarious.

Then I found out it was a real movie.

I then realized, I wasn't laughing anymore.

Countless sequels/spinoffs/copycats and millions of dollars in box-office and DVD sales later, I feel more like crying.

Rodriguez loves to shit these things out. When they stop making money and he can't get anymore funding for anything he'll have wished he never made them.

The actor playing Shark Boy is soooo ugly. Dang at least get a decent haircut for the movie.

He was raised by sharks! Do you know how hard it is to use scissors with a fin?

Yeah, I mean, Rodriguez isn't making Spy Kids and this film for people our age. He makes them for his kids. They love him. And the kind of money he makes off of these kiddie flicks let's him do stuff like Sin City.

After building the movie we titled it "Robert Rodriguez’s' Payin' the Bills". :)
I will say is that the guy who played shark boy is really good at martial arts. He was doing such a great job in one of the fight scenes with a bo. I was impressed.

And it was so funny to hear Shark Boy announce the powers he said. "My super sonic hearing is detecting that aslo". "I will bite that with my razor sharp teeth that are stronger than steel".

I just wish this movie had adult appeal like most children's cartoons do.

That's why he got the job, actually. Rodriguez wanted someone that'd do his own stunts and was proficient in martial arts. That's why he's so damn ugly.

The fact of the matter is, if your father made you your own film based on your childhood imagination, that'd be so fucking cool.

Rodriguez gets to do that and uses the profits to create stuff like Sin City.

Gotta love a guy who learned to direct by only reading books on the subject, then goes on to direct Sin City and still have enough clout in Hollywood to do whatever the fuck he wants..

Or someone who subjected himself to medical experiments to pay for his first movie.

He is able to do whatever he wants because he can make a movie in less than a month and does it super super super cheap by doing everything himself. Watch his "Ten Minute Filmshcool" featurettes on his movie DVDs.

You really think this drek is going to turn a profit for Rodriguez?

Seeing as how he probably spent $5 to make it, yea.

Hell yes. It cost nothing to make and it's not like they're pumping tens of millions in marketing it. Tykes will go see it.

Rodriguez escapes the big price tags by filming around the union, which makes his flicks cheap. He shoots 'em in Texas and edits them in his house, and as he does most of the work on the films, he doesn't have to pay out a billion people.

He is quite possibly one of the most hated men in Hollywood, though.

This is like one of the Brendon Small films from "Home Movies".... right down the to 'writer, producer, cinematographer, director and editor' credits going to the same person :lol

Well what's the actual budget on this supposed to be?

I could understand Spy Kids working for him since it's an established brand.....but this looks like a whole other world of crap. It wouldn't have appealed to me even when I was a kid.

Read Willco's post and stop laughing. That's how you make a movie cheap.

It's not posted, but I've heard between $20 to $30 million, which sounds about right.

Spy Kids wasn't an established brand. Rodriguez wrote and shot that himself. He made it an established brand.

The movie does have some cool cardboard 3D glasses. Shaped like a shark, or lava. If you put them on, then look atr like say, the Herbie Fully Loaded Display, fun times insue.

I mean that the Spy Kids franchise was established with a good first film so the later, more low-key releases of the sequels had something to ride on. Shark Boy doesn't really have that, it looks awful, and reportedly will be torture for parents. I would expect more "Thunderbirds" than "Spy Kids"....but I guess we'll see how things are going tomorrow.

I don't think it'll gross huge numbers or best Madagascar or anything, but it'll turn a profit, if only because it was so cheap to make. That's not including the DVD sales, which will make even more.

It's not for you, it's not for me and it's one of those films parents will hate. But he made it for kids. I don't care for those Spy Kids movies, and the hell if I'll watch 'em, but my little cousins love all of them.

I note the sarcasm (nice BTW), but those are probably great reasons for myself to think it would be utter crap.
