Bicycle age

I didn't get time to post about the potential bikes...

Lapierre Zesty AM 927

Santa Cruz Hightower

Trek Remedy (Frameset)

Specialized S-Works Enduro 29 (Frameset)

Yeti SB5.5

Evil Bikes - The Insurgent (Frameset)

Also waiting to see what YT have for 2017. Leaning towards a 29er... but realistically I'd like to give a couple of models a blast before deciding.

As I said last week, give Ubyk a call on 01865 596112 and speak to the owner as they are doing mad p2p deals right now because they want to grow. The deal my neighbour got on his LaPierre was batshit madness.

They stock Yeti, LaPierre, Santa Cruz and Evil.

Loads. Will try and remember to list them later today.

Just bite the bullet and buy a Yeti :)

I was vacationing in California for my birthday and went by the Santa Cruz factory for a visit. You can take any of their bikes out on the local trails - $20 USD for four hours. I chose the Hightower on a classic local trail called Mailbox (which is apparently a very famous trail in MTB history. I really enjoyed the Hightower more than the Bronson and 5010, so I'd really recommend throwing a leg over that one too.

On the weekend I had to ride off the path for a bit to avoid a dozen dogs being walked together and in the process got some little spiky things from the grass embedded in my front tire. Took them out and rode on with no issues. But this morning I go to move my bike after not touching it since getting back from that ride and the tire is flat. I see there are patch kits and such but are they more just a quick temporary fix like the weird little spare wheel for a car or are they a more long term solution if they work? Or do I just need to buy a new tire? I've only had the bike since January so I've never replaced anything on it before.

Some patches are basically stickers, and they're somewhat iffy. I carry them because they weight basically nothing and take up basically no space, but I don't trust them as long-term solutions.

Some patches are pieces of material that you can bond to a tube with rubber cement. These are a permanent fix. Most cyclists chuck punctured tubes, but some people hang onto them until they have like nine or ten patches, and this basically works too.

Or do I just need to buy a new tire? I've only had the bike since January so I've never replaced anything on it before.
The tire itself is likely fine, as long as you've found and removed whatever caused the puncture. It takes a pretty serious stab to properly damage a tire.
(That said, frequent flats are a sign that your tire might be going bad.)

What's damaged is probably the inner tube. You can either patch it or replace it. Also, you should learn how to change a tire and tube, and you should carry the equipment necessary to do so when you go riding.

GAF, Someone broke into my garage just about an hour ago! And my bicycle has just been stolen!

My big, expensive e-bike was chained to a tailor-made stationary rack by a thick cable that was connected to a cheap u-lock between the back wheels and the frame. My cheap, Chinese folding bike was chained with a cheap mongoose chain to a water pipe.

As cheap as these lock where, they did their job! My e-bike is safe after the thieve failed to break the locks, but the foldable wasn't as lucky. The thieve broke the water pipe and took the cheaper bicycle, waking everyone with the noise of falling water... My garage is currently a mess :( .

I feel lucky, since instead of losing $5k+ I just lost ~$350 (they also took a nice tire pump and I'm counting the damage to the installation), but vulnerable. I'm done being lazy and used my high-end, street only chain to fix the e-bike to a thick block of cement, even though the cheaper locks where enough to save my baby.

RIP, foldable bike

At first, I was unimpressed, but I learned to love you. I'm proud of your sacrifice, saving your big sister.

I agree. But I think that maybe the falling water acted as an alarm. With more time, the thieve could have taken the expensive bike. Not now, though. Not without power tools.

I suggest an actual alarm too. Fuckers tried to break into my garage in the night and I had no idea. I will now though (and they'll be mostly deaf).

A thundercunt attempted to break into my neighbour's garage earlier in the year, after his four mountain bikes and three motorbikes. The noise actually woke me up but I thought it was just his automatic door playing up, as I looked out of the window and saw that the light kept turning on and off as someone was trying to force the door open. So I just went back to sleep with a mental note to call him in the morning about it. Luckily he also woke up and chased the guy off. :p

My neighbour just bought his box-fresh 2017 LP Zesty AM 527 round for me to have a play on. Got it delivered today. My word, I don't think I've ever seen a better-looking bike. The orange-fade-to-yellow stripes on the matte black carbon gives it a real retro 1970s look. I fucking love it. Still amazed he got £800 off it, too..!

I want one.

Fantastic dawn ride at Slade this morning. You wouldn't believe how dry it was up there after last weekend's swamp, PT. Had to cut it ~10 miles short because the play in my 'clicky' steering bearings (which I totally forgot to fix in the week) got a lot worse, and attempts to fix it on the trail weren't successful (which I don't understand, as I fixed it as soon as I got home with the same method. Cold hands and multitool, maybe?).

Changed the cleats on my shoes too and managed to strip the socket on one by over-tightening it. Bah!

Got another dawn ride at Cwm Carn tomorrow which should be nice and frosty.

Yeah, but it's been so cold and the ground was so saturated I was expecting much worse up there. I always forget how well they drain.

Had a closer look at the Zesty AM up there too and my God, it's pornographically gorgeous.

I think I'm officially sick of pure road riding, that or it's the cooler weather just making me want to be in the woods.

Congratulations, dude. That's awesome! With the love and support of your friends and family you CAN do this. The hardest step is admitting to yourself that you WANT to change, and it seems you are already down that path. I suggest watching Going Clear: Scientololgy and the Prison of Belief to gain strength and understanding, Be strong buddy.

In other news I'm up at stupid o'clock to drive to a frosty mountain in darkest Wales and wait for the sun to rise so that I can burst my lungs pedalling to the top. And all with a fucking anchovy bone still stuck in my throat from last night's pizza. It's like a needle in there. I'm gonna be wheezing like an old pair of bellows.

HA!

I don't mind riding road, it's still liberating for the mind but boy oh boy is it a lot more fun when you can link up some dirt.

Been having trouble motivating myself to go out to cycle long enough to get a good workout, so I'm trying trail running. 20 minutes and I'm dead, so I see great gains in my future (and pain).

Mascot would be so proud of me. I left the barbed wire at home today and just had an exploration session. Finding lots of cheeky bits of singletrack (footpaths). Some legit, some not. Was a terrible workout, but it was still fun (aside from utterly destroying my legs because of brambles).

Got sorta lost at one point and realised I was going to miss the F1 so had to hammer it back. lol

One of the bods at Cwm Carn today had a T130 CRS, PT. It was a dark bluie-grey with orange decals, and looked awesome. Are those the 2017 colours? He said Eagle wasn't necessary, and the super long cage was pretty vulnerable.

Yeah, that's the latest version. I wasn't a great fan of it in person... and I'm sure 1x12 wouldn't be necessary for most people. But I'm not most people. :D

Besides, I ran 3x with crazy long cages for years. You've got to be pretty shit technique wise to be putting it in harms way. (Or like, exclusively riding in deep ass ruts)

Edit - Unrelated. I've decided I'm going to buy a full size OS map of my local area. I quite enjoyed exploring today so I'm going to mark out my discoveries on a proper paper map to see where I've been / where I've still got to check. Strava etc can be good, but I did some cool little bits today that no-one else seems to go down (or at least if they do, they keep it quiet).

How do I tell what length of seatpost I need for a frame? It didn't come with one and the manufacturer website just lists 27.2 for the width, nothing for length. It says that the full bike cones with a Promax 228 Alloy Black but that doesn't help because when I search for that u get several different sizes. So what do I need to measure? I figure it's a 330 because when I measure 400 out it looks a little long.

Also gaf is finally banned at work, along with every other forum I post at. Yay for productivity I guess because I hate posting on my phone. Like this. Ugh, the spelling errors.

Surely it's just the distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the seatpost collar, plus whatever makes it to get to you your normal saddle height.

For instance, my bb to saddle height is 74cm, so if the bb to seatpost collar measurement is 44cm, I know I need at least a 30cm seatpost (plus say 5cm if that doesn't include the minimum insertion).

Unless you're doing something fancy, get a really long seatpost and cut off the excess once you figure everything out, making sure to sand the end smooth again after you make the cut. LBS should be able to cut seatpost for cheap as well, if you don't have the cutting/sanding tools.

Most of the time, it's not even an issue if you leave it long. Penalty is usually only a bit of extra weight.
(That said, I had a very hard-to-diagnose ticking-sound-during-hard-pedaling that turned out to be the too-long seatpost; there was wiggle room deep in the seat tube, and the frame was flexy vintage steel, so the end of the post was just kind of doing its own thing. Cutting it to reasonable length fixed the issue.)

Awake at 5am for another delightfully freezing dawn ride up and down Cafall.

On the plus side, my central heating packed up last night so stepping outside into the fost was a relatively painless transition.

...and it was awesome. As usual. Got there a bit too early so we set off in pitch blackness, and nobody had brought lights. The initial climb was therefore a little hairy until dawn broke..! Here's a bloody awful potatocam photo by the waterfall, which was in full flow last week but merely a trickle today. Bah!

LBS has an old Varsity for sale. Complete with the chromed fenders.

Only bike there where they didn't write the weight on the packet. :D

Went out adventuring again. Completely ruined my brand new long sleeve MTB top. If I'm honest I'm a little bit pissed off that it isn't more hard wearing. The last of this sort that I bought had a very tough material over the arms to stop that sort of thing.

Was a good ride on the whole though, and with the common sense to wear full legs today, I came away mostly unbrambled. Also found a descent Mascot would love (I ended up having to walk bits, because I'm shit!).

Was really cold today, went for a ride. There's no snow but there's all sorts of frozen water on the ground. Had tremendous traction cycling uphill, but the first time I dismounted I slipped trying to walk up a said hill and banged my knee.
