On the subject, my next helmet will be a MIPS one, but they are still very few and far between. I've not actually seen an AIM helmet in the real world yet.

How the hell do you re-thread the rear brake cable through the inside of the carbon top tube on the GT STS? Is there a technique I'm missing?
 
Yeah, I watched them all last night. Some amazing stuff in there. I'd say inspirational but fuck trying half the stuff they do. :D

I've actually added that trail from the end of Dan's vid to my "have to see" trail list. Looks incredible.

You can't. Once the cables go you need to give the bike away to some random dude on a forum. It's a shame, but what can you do?

Seriously though, I dunno! Never had the chance to play with one and find out :(

Can't you just feed the outer through? Maybe give it a little jiggling until it emerges at the other end?


....goddamn, I'm so jealous. I think I'd rather have an STS than my FSR. Maybe I should sell the FSR and get on the bay.

That's the easiest way. Use some electrical tape and attach the new outer to the old one, whip it through and then separate 'em. I'm assuming that it's probably too late for that though and the old outer is lying on the shed floor.

Yeah, that's what I'd have done. Unfortunately this didn't seem to occur to the mechanic performing the service yesterday. Got a horrible feeling it's now too late for that. Might be a way using a stiffer, thinner draw wire that can be 'lassoed' at the other end, but that's a task for another day when I'm feeling more patient. It's warm and sunny so I'm off for a ride instead.

An update on Martyn Ashton's condition (that guy who does those awesome bike jumping / stunt vids like Road Bike Party):

During one of the stunts on the Animal WD40 Action Sports Tour, Martyn fell backwards off of a three metre-high bar and hit the ground with significant force. The impact caused severe damage to his spine, dislocating the T9 and T10 vertebrae. After paramedics stabilised him at the scene, Martyn was swiftly airlifted to Coventry Hospital where he received emergency treatment and was admitted to Intensive Care.

The initial prognosis is not positive: Martyn has currently lost feeling below the point of injury. He has now been moved to RJ&AH Hospital Oswestry’s Specialist Spinal Care Unit where he is receiving treatment and undergoing further tests to assess the extent of his injuries and to map the road to recovery.

Hopefully they'll be able to fix him. =/

anybody here attempt to do a 300 miles bike ride?? how did you train for such a ride? any tips?

I want to do a ride from south Florida to Georgia next year...that's around 300 miles.

Handyman should be my middle name - I just wanted to adjust the upper limit to my front derailleur in preparation for a ride tomorrow. It's now been over 3hours (1a.m.), I've taken the whole thing apart and suddenly realised that I have idea what I'm doing (I've checked all the guides and seen every youtube video, but the chain keeps hitting the derailleur no matter which screws I turn.

edit: wohoo. at least I got the gear working while the bike was on the stand. I still don't believe that the limit screws actually do anything, I didn't feel a difference no matter which way and how much I tightened/loosened them. I'm sure I'll be taught otherwise on the road tomorrow (probably during a massive rainfall)

Have you tried it while on the bike? There can be quite the difference between the bench and how it all works on the road.

Got it to work in the end after an additional three hours and the gears felt great (untill I crashed and damaged the bike to the point where I couldn't finish the ride)

I would if it was mine to tweak - unfortunately my mate seems smitten by it. All I can do is suggest incremental upgrades so that when he does eventually get bored it'll have all the kit I'd have wanted to put on it myself..! Found a full set of OG decals on eBay, plus adaptors for disc conversion. I'll start him there.

It already rides beautifully though, and obviously looks like sex in bike form. We were up around Ashton Court in Bristol on Saturday and it was getting a lot of admiring attention from fellow bikers.
 
So they blocked out the @xxxxx.com part of the email address but isn't that gmail? I mean, the formatting looks really similar but maybe there's another web-based email client that looks like gmail?

Woke up one day last week, rear was flat. Luckily I can ride the bus to classes so I ended up getting a new tube later on that day. Not thinking, I put the tube in, pumped it up, and rode like I usually did. Just got out of a class about an hour ago and it was flat again, so this time I had to walk it home. Just took a look in the tire and yep, there was a little nub of metal in it, so it's out now and off to get another tube.

So i'm looking to upgrade the disc brakes on my bike. Currently has 160mm front/140mm rear. If I wanted to change it to a 160mm rear rotor, assuming I get new brake calipers and rotors, do I just need a post adapter for the rear?

Something like this I guess?
 
Depends on the mount type you have now. Assuming it's a straight rotor swap then you can just buy the adaptor appropriate to your mount.

If you're buying new calipers and rotors then I'd expect them to come with everything you need (assuming you get the ones appropriate to your mounts).

Edit - Out of interest, any particularly reason you want to even them up? 160/140 is pretty common.

Mostly because the brakes I want (TRP Spyres) to replace my crappy BB5s are kind of hard to find right now, with 160mm being easier to find than 140mm. Thought maybe I could get away with buying two 160mm.

edit - I guess I could just buy the brakes and not use the rotor for the rear. duh
 
On a random note, was reading a mountain bike mag yesterday and it stated that Specialized's best selling bike in the US is the S-Works Epic. That would be fine, but the price on the damn thing starts at £7,500.

How on earth does a £7.5k ($10k USD) bike find itself as the top selling model?

Holy crap. Carbon?

Aluminium luckily, becausr the frame was probably the only thing that didn't require work. Wheels were crooked, brakes took a hit, had to change the saddle, cassette, chain, hanger, etc even if I was only doing around 30 km/h when I crashed. The next time I'll try to land under the bike to dampen its fall. In a country with public healthcare that would save me alot of money

Went for a bimble through the woods a few days ago but had to cut it short (15 miles) - my knees were inexplicably as sore as hell right from the beginning of the ride. Couldn't understand it. Pain on every revolution. Felt like I'd been laying flooring for three days straight. I'd not been on the bike for three days previously, and couldn't account for the pain at all. Going out after lunch today for a blast but knees still feel tender. Very puzzled. Energy levels are down a bit so maybe fighting a bug or virus?

I'm looking for a bike mount for my iphone 5. Any suggestions?

If not specific products, I'm at least curious to know if people prefer the "clear bag" style vs. "rigid" mounts for their smart phones.
 
Mountain bike or road bike?

If its a mountain bike, don't bother with anything else, go straight to ram mounts. Nothing else will survive more than a year on harsh trails.
