Got my Rocky Marciano DVD's! Been watching for the past 5 hours. Here are some things that ring out to me.
1) He uses his head better then any fighter I've seen. He actually uproots the other fighter beneath their chin by pressing forward and upward with his head. This is opposed to just smacking it foward. When he gets the guy up in the air, he pushes them into a corner or the ropes and pummels them. If he misses with the head, he uses his shoulders. Unique, brutal, and effective.
2) Don Cockell has huge fucking heart. I thought he was just some bum that Marciano beat down. How this guy took Marciano's barrage in the 8th round, I don't know. That was one of the most brutal beatdowns I've ever seen. As great a display of it is for Marciano's brutal effectiveeness, I was more impressed with Cockell's heart and toughness.
3) Walcott is a deceptive technician. I've heard him get put down before as a weak heavyweight champion, but I think he fared better against Marciano in their first fight then anyone else I've seen today. He had a few things going for him.
For one, he could get away from Marciano's clinches better then anyone else. He was really slick how he would roll away from Marcianos clinch and hit him as he moved off. Frankly, I didn't see anyone else deal with Marciano's bulling in and clinch better then Walcott. He could just roll away. He also used his shoulders and head movement to roll with the punches pretty damn well.
Finally, he was ballsy. He wasn't afraid to try and whip Marciano's ass when Rocky brought the fire.
4) From what I saw, I think Rocky used his clinch and bull in style best in the Layne fight. It was really different to watch. He just never gave Layne any room at all to do anything. Relentless fighter.
5) Rocky fights like a caveman. That right he lands on Ezzard Charles in slow motion, even with the grainy footage is devastating. Ezzard has such heart to get up from it. All those 50's fighters were tough as nails.
6) Although some people get up from Marciano's hits, most didn't. In fact, they looked dead. No movement, not even shaking. They just lay there. Brutal.
Great fights all around, a hell of a dvd collection. Get it here-

Maybe later I'll post more Marciano thoughts and some on the Bowe/Holyfield trilogy I got.
