Biggest downgrades from initial reveal?

Yeah, but I think that supports my point? The fact that the engine doesn't have to load a bunch of new assets just for a cutscene it what enables you to skip the cutscene and get right back to the game, isn't it?

You're right, it definitely helps to go from A to B without loading C. The impressive thing is just how fast they can go from A to B, which sometimes gets ignored because people assume they do a bunch of background loading while you watch a cutscene.

The CG trailer (that totally counts because Sony/Guerilla waffled on whether it was actually CG or achievable in real-time for a while) for Killzone 2 was insane.

Yeah, it really is hard to top this.

Madden was bad, but at least the poly count was in check. Guerilla just straight up released a CG trailer that took days/weeks to render and let everyone believe that it was in-game.

I don't know how it had more effects. The lighting wasn't dynamic anymore in lots of places. The beginning level of Halo 1 had some great lighting. Nothing came close to that on Halo 2.

It wasn't pushing more effects but Bungie tried to cram a bunch of new tech into the game Xbox wasn't ready for. Normal mapping looked gross.

But yeah, the lighting was awful too. Remember "Truth and Reconciliation"? The lighting and AI on display in that stage made me think Starship Troopers had finally arrived on consoles. Nothing has come close in that series let alone Halo 2.

God, I hate that game.

Why do people keep saying this? The bottom versions are exactly how they look like in the game.

Seriously, load up the game, watch every LP on youtube, or find me an actual screenshot where it doesn't look like the latter.

You do realize those are all from pre-rendered cut scenes, right? how does pre-rendered CGI get a "downgrade"?...

They made different rendering decisions there, but it's not what were talking about here, nor what most mean when they talk of in-game downgrades...

But they pulled it off. Graphically at least.

Only thing that didn't quite make it were the animations (never was gonna compete) and the RPG smoke effects.

Dug up some old gifs

ughh, those gifs make me sad as hell. that fake game looked so great.

It's really Motorstorm that was the worse offender of the two. The final build was a huuge downgrade from the target render. That E3 2005 target render is more something i would expect from a PS4 Motorstorm.

As I mentioned before, weren't they rendered in-engine? That's my recollection from what I recall hearing. Which means, if there were restrictions placed on the engine itself, they would reflect in the cut-scenes too.

Some of this shit is starting to make me afraid for Witcher 3. Anybody got comparisons between E3 reveal TW2 and retail TW2? I think retail TW2 actually ended up looking slightly better.

If there is one studio to have hope that they will actually deliver it's CDPR.

Every Fable game, but especially the first one, promised to be a hugely innovative, highly dynamic experience. The Molyneux hype train is largely responsible for this, but even with all of the over-hype, I can't help but feel like the Fable series is a pale imitation of what it was intended to be.

The Witcher 3 is going to look as it did in E3. CDPR doesn't mess around!

I'm playing through this right now. Even if it looked liked that, I don't think I would be enjoying myself any more than I am.

No, they did not. The polygon count and image quality are through the roof in the CG trailer in ways that even modern games on the new consoles can't achieve.

Definitely amongst the worst offenders I've ever seen. I remember before thinking that the idea of Driveclub looking better was hilarious... How things change.

Isn't the idea that these cutscenes are meant to be seamless though? So if the realtime representation of these characters and areas are downgraded, the CG representation of them would be as well right? Many people aren't aware that the cutscenes in games like Uncharted, Halo 4, Ryse etc are prerendered. They would be far more likely to notice if there was a more obvious disparity between the cutscenes and what they actually play.

Was the Killzone thing ever actually presented as the game? From my memory, it wasn't even called Killzone 2.
It was a pretty dishonest series of trailers. They definitely tried to fool people into thinking it was all in game and that's what it was going to look like. Glad that era Sony is gone.

I believe they did state it was in game hence why people were pissed. And it was definitely referred to as KZ2.

There's absolutely no way it's the deepest downgrade of all time though (White Knigth Chronicles anyone?) and the game still ended up looking phenomenal. Sometimes you just gotta brush this PR nonsense aside and enjoy the product that's actually sitting in front of you.

Basically just never trust a reveal trailer, especially at launch.

This was the shits.

Not even the dead can know peace from this evil.

Not really fair, if you compare cinematics, it looks closer. But yeah, MGS4 definitely underwent some serious transformation on it's rocky road to release.

No offense, but it blows my mind that, to this day, there are people who genuinely think that the final product looked better than the CG trailer they released at E3.

I understand that everyone has a subjective view of things, but this shouldn't be a point of contention for anyone blessed with the gift of vision.

EDIT: Aaaannd right on cue...

I'm gonna say this (and probably get a lot of flak for it), but Killzone 2 looked better than the pre rendered trailer.

If anybody considers mentioning Halo 2, they would be WRONG.

Dude, I love Halo but that shit was so obvious and their own fault! The reveal ran on 128MB RAM devkits at near max. On 64MB consoles, it had no chance of running as is.

That's a big dum dum oops that didn't need to happen.

Love how these posts are right next to each other.

Are there any threads with gafs reaction to the first Final Fantasy XIII or Versus XIII trailer? Would love to see how gaf reacted

We need an opposite of this thread.

Windwaker being the best. Come at me.

I gotta say the Little Busters thing is too great.

Not hard playing the game. GG has never been a slouch in the graphics and technical department, regardless of the questionable quality of the stories they try to tell.

Again; what Sony/GG did was wrong and I'm glad the BS has stopped, but the CGI trailer wasn't that great looking either. The game I bought delivered quite well up on my 70" screen in direct comparison to it.
