Wind Waker looks better.

All I'm noticing in this thread is that most people post the best pre-release screenshots, and then post the worst-looking final version screenshots to prove their points.

I can appreciate the the original trailer from 9 years ago doesn't hold the same mysticism it once held, but it still looks better than any game we've ever seen, or likely will see over the course of this generation.
LOL. Dark Sorcerer and The Order already looks better IMO and that is just the beginning.

Halo 2 and BioShock Infinite are the two biggest for me. Once I realized that gorgeous New Mombassa in Halo 2 had been turned into a dinky-looking third world country, I was like, "oh, hell nah."

Thought the same thing in BioShock Infinite after I took down that zeppelin. Once I heard Elizabeth say, "Booker, that...was amazing." I realized that I had essentially been playing what had once been the amazing E3 demo.

I still enjoyed both games, but they were both nothing like what I was expecting.

I would argue the opposite. Lighting's polygonal detail in particular was reduced quite a bit. The hands and hair in particular are much lower poly. Oddly the soldiers in the background seem to exhibit similar lower LOD builds in both versions.

The game certainly does and always has looked great regardless of whether they overshot their target.
That's why I said somethings were improved, some weren't. The AA is better, but it now suffers from dithering, her poly-count took a dive, but the environmental detail improved, her clothing physics aren't as good, but the visual effects are better. For me it's a wash technically.

It's funny though, I basically played FFXIII in four big chunks over a few months, and I hadn't seen that trailer for a long time when I got to chapter 12, and I'd kind of forgotten about it, assuming it was just teasing crap, then that cutscene kicked in, and it was basically identical in terms of her animation in the scenes. I was very surprised. I think it's bizarre that essentially final animation work on a cutscene was completed so far in advance of release. It really makes me wonder about the production pipeline over there.

I mean, this is the same company that made Lightning's boobs bigger for Lightning Returns just because of the outfit customization. Is it bad that the main reason that bugged me was because of canon? I don't want to play the tail end of the trilogy and have the main character have bigger boobs just because.

On topic, the graphical downgrade seems pretty significant but XIII didn't disappoint graphics-wise. I mean, I'd still rank it as one of the best looking PS3 games. And it certainly was better looking than its sequels.

Breast enlargements are quite low on my list of issues with the whole FFXIII series. I just happened to notice the difference in those specific screenshots.

The closest they've ever come was, I think, some Skyward Sword images rendered at a higher resolution than they could be on the Wii. IIRC.
Never played Skyword Sword but I'll look up those images later

It's funny, cuz most official Nintendo shots they reveal actually look worse than the final game in a lot cases. lol, the anti-bullshot if you will.

Haha yeah I noticed that too, all their reveals looked nothing like their final builds which look way better, Pikmin 3, Mario 3D world and Tropical Freeze come to mind hopefully that new Hyrule Warriors game follows this path cause boy that trailer was ugly.

Elaborate please.
It didnt suffered much but there were few downgrades like destruction which in retail games was just limited ro sheets of steel . Before that it was material dependent. Downgrades in lightning and complete lack off AA On foliage which were tgere in release trailer

The foliage (particularly the palm trees) had lower poly count than the early demos as well. But really, Crysis does not belong in this thread at all.

I agree with the destruction. It's very minor though. I disagree on the lighting and the AA.
What video are you referring to? Maybe I've not seen it.

Do you have a link to footage or screenshots of these trees?

There were some videos of the old 2006 build that showed the better animations of the leaves when shooting them, but I can't find them anymore. But here are some screens that kinda show what I mean.

Again, not a big deal when compared to the stuff mentioned here, but it did bug me when the game was released. What was a bigger deal to me was how the cloak mode was changed visually in the final build, but that's a different story.

Also Halo 3's in game trailers were almost the same as the in game cut scenes, there wasn't really a much of a downgrade beyond the usual high res version bullshit all developers do.

There was a CG trailer, but it was never suggested that was in game.

Uhh...what? It got a bigger downgrade than Halo 2 to its final form. Chief's armor looked like uprezed Halo 2 armor with a few scratches added in.

And as a reminder:

Reveal Vidoc

"That's real stuff out there. We pushed it as far as we can." -- Marcus Lehto 1:58
There were more invisible walls than in Halo 2.

"When you're working in high definition, it's a very unforgiving environment."
Wasn't this one of the biggest high profile sub-HD games in the early part of the gen?

"You see the textures are very high resolution. You see the real-time reflection on his visor." Frankie 2:27
I guess those textures were still loading...throughout the entire game. What real-time reflection?

"If people showed us a pre-rendered movie, then there's always going to be specculation that 'well, yeah your engine isn't going to do that.' What we're trying to show firmly is yeah, our engine can do the stuff we say it's going to do and it's doing it right now." -- Jay Weinland 2:40

"What we're building here is our bar for what we're going to shoot for in real gameplay" -- Lehto 2:55

"This is the game, this is the engine, this is what Halo 3 is going to look like." -- 7:02

And right when Nintendo showed that early video they confirmed they'd already scrapped those models. It was really just a tech demo of what was possible on Gamecube rather than what they were actually going to do.

It was a good choice too, because Wind Waker still looks beautiful today, whilst the demo looks like some nasty early 90's Reboot crap. It's hideous.

Fucking Spore.

What was one of the most hyped games out there back in 2005-2006 ended up as a mediocre game that was forgotten by everyone. This wasn't a downgrade in graphics so much as a downgrade in tone, art style, and gameplay.

I used to watch this video all the time. Now it's just a reminder of what could have been the best game ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA

This! This wins the thread. What was one an epic, turned into 5 completely different games fused together. What a waste.

Aesthetics wise I too prefer KZ2 the game over the prerendered trailer. However, technology wise those two aren't even close.

Bad comparison shots. Also, no need to be so condescending.

You can see both have their pros and cons. I find the lighting, texture work, post processing, shadows and the particles in the alpha build better looking and more appealing. The only things that's stand out as much better in the pre-rendered trailer are the animations. Although by today's standards, they look pretty rough.
Could you make the CGI trailer screenshots smaller and blurrier?

and when i thought image compression couldn't go farther....

please post legit direct feed screens instead of compressed imgur/ign/youtube screens -_-

makes the game look worse than it actually is

Sure, we can't gauge texture resolution from those pictures, but the differences in lighting and shadowing are as undeniable as they are severe.

Wow did they just got rid of the dynamic lighting?

Earlier shots are from the IGN gameplay premiere which is well known to be the PC version. Release shots are PS3 or 360. Not exactly the 1:1 comparison it seems to be.

I don't care what anyone says, but Final Fantasy XIII was one of the best looking games that I have ever played. People can argue about the game but it's pretty darn close to the reveal.

People were so busy posting their 32X AA Extreme Modded Crysis: 20 FPS Realistic Sunbeams Edition screenshots for so long that what the game used to look like was sort of forgotten. I remember the physics used to look a lot less clunky, enemies actually ragdolled instead of turning into wooden boards when they died.

Where's the downgrade? The modelling on her hair was the only thing. Meryl never came off to me as a weak-looking character. The update actually makes it look like her face can emote.

The revision has muscle mass, which, as we all know, real women don't have.

Her hair turned into this horrible rubbery looking crap, she has Lego person hair in the game. The old one not only looks better, it moved too.

MGS4 held up well to the reveal, I'm impressed. Its the aesthetic changes that really bother me. Like some facial models (above) and the colour tint.

Wow neogaf sure was full of hype and energy back then.. Much more positive attitude. What happened? Over modded to blandness or what? considering half the people there are banned..

That's kind of NeoGAF. Most people don't make it to the other side unbanned.
