it was a Citi Bike, they are sturdy but just regular bikes. Looks like the smoke came from the train engaging its emergency brakes.

Sounds logical. But the probably dont do it because if there's a mechanical failure with a guard rail or gate, nobody can get in or out. Also, the gate would have to always be going up or down after each load, so if someone is standing near it, it'll hit them.

If it's a stationary mini guard rail, the trains would need to align at each one perfectly which isnt going to happen. And you'd still have risk of people tripping on it.

As someone said in the Reddit thread, back in the old days, like the Cold War or WW2, bullshit like this would be thought of as sabotage. Granted, it could be some scrub-ass hobo tossing his bike on the tracks to chase down some rat for lunch. Because New York.
