Client: Azureus
Testing port 6999 ... NAT Error

I'm running XP SP2... how do I make this work so I actually get decent speeds?

Can't help - I'm having a nightmare with d-addicts and bit comet. Opened/forwarded everything in sight, and still messed up. Sometimes I get a good connection, then my internet explorer doesn't open any pages.

You forwarded that port in your router to your PC IP, right? And allowed that application access through your firewall?

I don't have a router... at least not a regular one, my DSL modem is one of those modem/router combos, but the wireless is disabled, and there's only one machine here.

Windows Firewire is set to allow:

6881 UDP
6999 TCP

Other than that, I have no idea what the hell I'm doing... nor how to configure "NAT" or what it is. I've always hated this networking stuff.

How long have you been using BitTorrent? And what's your ISP?

I had ports forwarded and triggered out the wazoo and I was still having these problems, only to later find out that after I switched ISPs that everything magically worked.

There's a chace this is what's happening to you, but I don't know.

I've been using various BitTorrent clients for a year, and none perform very well... mainly because I assume they aren't configured properly. They all work, with multiple downloads, they're just painfully slow.

I'm on Verizon DSL...

I was on Verizon as well, and I had all the problems you've got.

Switching to Adelphia Powerlink instantly made me connectable and my speeds have gone through the roof.

Also, this probably doesn't concern you, but I haven't been able to get Azureus to work sinve 2.1.0.4 -- it just doesn't connect to anything. I use BitTornado .3.7 and it's like butter.

I'm on Qwest DSL and I have a DSL modem/router, its an actiontec and I had to got in and enable port forwarding on mine. You probably need to do that. What model DSL modem do you have?

I have Verizon DSL and was having NAT errors as well. I figured it out easily enough when I still had a vanilla Linksys wired router, but then things got fucked up when I upgraded to Linksys wifi. I did manage to figure it out, eventually, and now get awesome (green smileys) connections with Azureus. So I do not think it is an ISP issue.

I just find it odd that as soon as I switched to Adelphia my port forwarding magically worked. For me, it really seems like Verizon was the cause of my problems.

Verizon could be blocking it at random points, depending on firewall rules on their routers. Given that their network is so big, they most likely have multiple exits from thier network routers to the general Internet. These exit points are probably regional, and managed by staff in the regional Verizon locations. It's entirely possible for one network segment to have blocked out some or all of the BT ports in one area, and for another segment to not block them at all.

Call Verizon helpdesk, tell them that you want to download Fedora Core from BT, but you wanted to check to see if the ports were blocked on their end. The national helpdesk will probably stall because they have no clue what you're talking about, so see if you can get in touch with some local network engineers/techs.

http://dessent.net/btfaq/#ports

i believe that should be TCP not UDP . also, make it a range.

dunno. maybe. asdasf

I've also been having problems with Azureus...

I usually used abc but I heard azureus is better so I switched (I kinda feel guilty...) and followed the guides for getting a static ip address and then forwarding the 6881 port. It's a bit better, but I my torrents are always on the yellow smiley. I disconnected the router but the status still didn't change from yellow.

Any ideas?

Alright, I solved it!

WOOOOOOOO!

Here's what I did Verizon people, and now I have GREEN SMILEYS!!! YEAH!!!!

1. Downloaded azureus from, http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/
2. Followed the setup guide for Azureus here,
http://www.tyc.xmgfree.com/New Folder/azureusconfig1.JPG
http://www.tyc.xmgfree.com/New Folder/azureusconfig2.JPG
http://www.tyc.xmgfree.com/New Folder/azureusconfig3.JPG
http://www.tyc.xmgfree.com/New Folder/azureusconfig4.JPG
http://www.tyc.xmgfree.com/New Folder/azureusconfig5.JPG
3. Windows Firewall, was of course, told to unblock Azureus unpon first run.
4. In Windows Firewall setup, add these exceptions:
a) 6881 UDP
b) 6999 TCP
5) Go to, http://192.168.1.1/ - this logs you into your Verizon router/modem configuration
6) Configuration -> Services
7) define custom service -> (Port Fowarding Ranges of Ports) -> next

Setup such that,
Name: BitTorrent
Port 1
Protocol: TCP
Global Port(s): 6999
Base Host Port: 6999

8) I also enabled "STATIC NAT" ... not that I know what the hell that does.

So yeah, everything works, and I'm getting 120K+ BitTorrent downloads.

Welcome to the wonderful world of BT. I don't use Windows Firewall, personally, but well done.

Well, you have Verizon as well, so you should also partake in the awesome newsgroup servers we have.

I actually perfer alt.binaries.multimedia to Torrents of TV shows.

anyone know of a program similar to peerguardian for macs.. preferably one that allows you to switch on and off. it seems the mac version of peerguardian is a bit butchered.

Errr, I actually know absolutely NOTHING about newsgroups. Would you be so kind as to please set me on a path towards knowledge, and all that? :)

Yay, now I don't have to explain!

I use Agent by the way, even though the interface is kinda... 16-bit, and shit. But I've been using it for years, so I'm fine.

I'm also halfway done with tonight's Family Guy episode, and I don't have to share with a Torrent.

just google portforwarding, it'll bring you to a site filled with how to port forward based on whatever make/model router you have.

Really.. just too easy.

Just make sure you remember to forward HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE based firewalls. The windows one is easy enough; run azereus, click unblock. Or just select it from the firewall options.
