Blizzcon Discussion thread of "you made how many billion?"

What is "phasing?"

Where zones themselves change for you based on what quests you've done. The Death Knight starting area really shows it. You don't see other players unless ya'll are all on the same stage of the zone.

Q: Will I need the expansion to be able to experience the Cataclysm changes?
A: When the Cataclysm occurs, it will occur for all players, whether they have purchased the expansion or not--you will no longer be to play in the original version of Kalimdor or the Eastern Kingdoms. However, certain features such as the new zones, new races, and new level cap will only be accessible to players who purchase the expansion.
Pretty much what I have been stating for the past 2 weeks.

P.S. I love you too Metzen.

There's a technology introduced with vanilla wow but used very sparingly, but used heavily in Wrath of the Lich King, where different people are in different 'versions' of the same non-instanced world. For example, during the quest line for Death Knights, you help take over a farm, then a city, and doing so clears out the enemies in those areas for you, changing what quests are available, etc. It's essentially instancing without instances.

Hmm....elemental planes are the reason for the changes in the planet, guess it makes sense, should add some variety.
Perhaps this is one of the big reasons why the New Council of Tirisfal has integrated Thrall as their new Guardian. As a Shaman, he has definite ability to talk to these elemental planes.

Blizzard really needs to replace the graphic's engine for WoW. 5 years should be enough.
that's essentially what they've been doing this entire time. they're updating it incrementally.... surely you've noticed?

11 years wow

(technically they didn't start working on it until 2005 but still damn)

Starcraft 1998
Starcraft 2: 2010

Blizzard works on an 11-12 year cycle.

Phasing is a technique that allows more than one version of the world to be present in a given place at a given time. For instance, one village in Northrend is inhabited by ghosts of the Valkyr. In the "normal" phase (the one you see when you first run through the village) you see present-day enemies doing normal enemy things: patrolling around, killing people, staring at the ground, etc. But when you start a certain quest and run into the village you seamlessly pass into a second "phase". Under these conditions all the normal enemies disappear (on your client) and you see memories from ancient Valkyr ghosts, which in this case tell a story.

The basic functionality can be used to do many things: Make NPCs appear only after you complete a quest, make enemies appear at certain times but not others, move structures and effects, and so forth. The important point is that phases can be confined to a certain area or object, they can be unique to one player or be shared by a whole group, and they can be triggered by player actions. Doing this they can approximate permanent changes to the game world for an individual character in response to your progression without abandoning the shared-world aspect of the game as a whole.

That was the most significant reason I doubted this, actually, for one very major reason: This is going to make Patch 4.0 (downloaded, don't forget) absolutely *gargantuan*. Hope you've got some of the broadest broadband ever!

No big deal... they'll release the files probably 1-2 months early to start downloading every time you quit WoW for the night.

Racials:
Two Forms, instant, 1.5 sec cooldown, Turn into your currently inactive form.
Darkflight, instant, 3 min cooldown, activates your true form increasing movement speed by 70% for 10 sec
Viciousness, passive, increases all damage done by 1%.
Flayer, passive, skinning skill increased by 15 and allows you to skin faster.

Worgen starting zone begins with your character chained up and Royal Chemist Krennan Aranas promising to help find you a cure. "I'm not giving up on you, <player>. I don't have a cure for the Curse yet... but there are treatments. You'll have control again."

Is that going to work like Heroic Presence, benefiting everyone in a group/raid?

http://www.wow.com/2009/08/21/blizzcon-2009-live-blogging-the-cataclysm-new-starter-zones/

Check out these racials:

Best Deals Anywhere, always receive the best possible gold discount, regardless of faction.
Better Living Through Chemistry, Alchemy skill increased by 15.
Pack Hobgoblin, Instant, 30 minute cooldown, Calls in your personal servant, allowing you bank access for 1 min.
Rocket Barrage, 30 yd range, Instant, 2 min cooldown, Launches your belt rockets at an enemy, dealing 30 fire damage.
Rocket Jump, instant, 2 min cooldown, activates your rocket belt to jump forward.
Time is Money, cash in on a 1% increase to attack and casting speed.

I'm assuming some of these are going to get nerfed, bank access on the go is a super-high level engineering and argent tournament perk with a much bigger cooldown.

:lol Skinning racial, guess they had to balance making a bad-ass looking race with subpar racials.

How are they going to work the current two expansions into this?

If the new Azeroth is permanent for 1-60, how do the story lines that take place in Outland and Northrend gonna make any sense, when I go 61-70 then 71-80?

damn, I have the downloader torrent file open in Azureus & it's saying "FileNotFoundException: (the tracker url)". Anyone have any luck grabbing the Cataclysm video?

I disagree. I still think the game looks great, even on shitty computers thanks to the art style.

Wow that is one ugly goblin female.

Damn I was hoping for Pandaren as a new Race. :(

Oh well everything else looks fantastic for Cataclysm! Can't wait.

China bans the use of Pandarens, that's why they will never show up in WoW.

It probably just changes the physical landscape, but I imagine much of the original story and quests will remain how they are.

Yeah, but at some point they are going to have to move on....you cant keep developing for people who wont or hate to upgrade. Thats why i really want to see the new MMO they are working on

Loving Metzen's description at the moment. Heading into Northrend will change every character, it will change the story as much as it changed Arthas.
