Bloodborne Reviews Thread

Got damn it! This thread is making it really hard not to imediately blow 710 Australian Dollars (PS4 + BB + FFXV demo) after work today. It's not even rational either, as I never got more than a few hours into Demon's Souls or Dark Souls so it would probably end up being a colossal waste of money but the hype is too real. D:

To be fair, games journalism has come a LONG way from just a few short weeks ago when The Order scored poorly and it was time for reviews to go away and reviewers to pull their heads out of their asses :p

I just wanted to say again how much I love this post.

I don't think the discussion here is in good faith.

People are saying he is critiquing Bloodborne specifically, which he is not. Everyone here agrees that violence in Bloodborne is justified. Nobody has commented on the ubiquity of violence in games or the prevalence of violent games in the press cycle. So we are not discussing his opinion, we are taking a surface view of his opinion as a straw man and railing against it.

But more than that, the thread has been derailed calling him an idiot, lunatic, and "deranged", as well as dredging up his old posts as a way to discredit him and not his opinion.

Well, first, people have discussed the issue. Yes, violence is prevalent in video games. Is it a surprise that something we do for escapism and fantasy incorporates stuff that most people would never do in real life? Isn't that the point? So yes, we kill the living shit out of everything. Thugs, soldiers, demons, rats, zombies, pedestrians, gods... kill kill kill.

It's not surprising. Heck - it's almost the DNA of games insomuch that binary is on or off -- living or dead. Many games come at that from both directions -- hitting/shooting/jumping on things to turn them off or on. Add in competitive gaming, and we take it to a whole new level -- what better way to dominate the enemy in a competition of skill than a headshot?

Obviously, there are other types of games too. There are the addiction games that are skill based but ultimately repetitive -- Bejeweled or Tetris, etc. that have a nice druglike feedback loop as we get better and better. Or puzzle games (from room escape to myst or whatever), which give the satisfaction of solving in the same way crosswords or suduko does.

And then we have another 'addictive cycle' (my personal favorite), which is character progression. Turn your weakling warrior that can barely kill a rat into a level 99 Paladin that can melt a hoard of undead with a wink and curtsey. And what makes the most sense for that training? A long, long list of corpses trailing behind said Paladin. Kill, kill, kill. Once again, living the fantasy - 'escaping' into a dungeon and emerging a hero.

So yeah. I don't really see someone talking about violence in games as revolutionary. We've been hearing it since the 80s. I'm not surprised that violence is prevalent or normalized in games -- I'd be surprised if it wasn't. A medium about fantasy filled with fantasy? Who'd have thunk it. It's true of every medium, too. Books? Game of Thrones is full of death, rape, torture, incest, and everything else. And it's hardly alone in that. Film? Same. Violence is everywhere. And likewise, many games, books, and films exist without violence.

Many, many millions of people buy games to kill things, something they'd never do in real life. Is that healthy? Does it matter, given the only alternative would be censorship? The only thing that surprises me about games is that there isn't 100x more sex in them (VR might change that permanently).

All we can ever do is control our own existence. If someone doesn't want violent games in their life, then... don't play them. But I enjoy killing orcs and demons. Always have, always will, and I don't feel guilty stepping over their corpses to get to that warlock either.

Besides I've always enjoyed the Souls games (and a lot actually, to become even one of my favorite RPGs ever), I have to agree with that boss statement. When playing Dark Souls 1 I was devastaded by Four Kings, first because I had going into the pit without the ring, and many other tries next just getting kicked by him... the boss is actually quite awesome to be honest, but it was extremely frustrating to run all the way through, since Valley of Drakes, to get beaten like 5, 6, 7 times! For that reason I almost gave up the game... I became like 1 entire month without touching it, then I came back, did it, and kept going till the end. Awesome game, but that almost broke my entire experience!

That would massively change the game's design, though. The point of the current design is that you need to master each level (layout, enemies, etc) well enough that you can get to the boss in good enough shape to beat them... not 'just get past them' and hit a checkpoint / savepoint right before the boss. It's two completely different design ethos. And yes, this means it's not for everyone. Some people greatly prefer one way over the other and not every game will be for everyone. Your frustration over the mechanic is part of what makes the game brilliant for others... if Demon's Souls had lots of checkpoints and you could just push through the game from checkpoint to checkpoint it's unlikely it would have become the cult hit it was and we wouldn't have Bloodborne to play right now.

Just saw this thread, gotta say "wow", those reviews are actually a lot higher than I was expecting. Not a big fan of the PvP system, but I might have to end up getting this one at some point.

In the absence of reviews to complain about, people are actually trawling social media to find outliers to pile on. Amazing. Just play the damn game.

I'm still waiting on Amazon to deliver the game. Besides, I find those negative comments amusing. Is that wrong?

What's your expectations of a review thread once all the reviews are in? Intelligent debates?

The 'major' last few reviews have not even dropped yet. Will it go up, or down...............?

Bloodborne is cool, but I have three complaints:

1) Framerate;
2) Loading;
3) Aliasing. I don't mind about a little bit of aliasing, but it is soooooooo bad. I think there is too much things on the screen and nothing is filtered. It is really bothering me =/

Are you guys seriously talking about metacritic user score? Really?

User reviews are always ridiculous. Fanboys trolles, joke reviews etc. The number is meaningless.

I did find a funny quote from a 3/10 user review on the site. The guy goes into a decent level of detail so I don't think he's trolling or anything and he's entitled to his opinion for sure, I just found it amusing:

"As far as the combat goes its rather wooden, you have to time your slashes and gunshots, and it all feels rather dated, it feels like a step backwards when compared to the destructive ballet found in god of war's combat."

This is why...

EU release sucks. The amount of times I've almost walked in to spoilers.

Even when I go on to my PS4, my activity feed flashes up my friends playing Bloodborne and shows a clear picture of their game.

very surprised MC still at 93

there are so many 9's and 9.5s and 10s making up the rankings at this point that it would take an absurdly low score to budge it- and the vast majority of gaming magazines don't give anything less than a 7/10 to anything with any kind of budget.

on the flipside it would take a ridiculous amout of perfect scores to move the needle the other way since the score is already so high

Game is great but the framerate IS pretty shitty.

Luckily, that's not really the framerate as much as the framepacing. So when that's fixed, everything should feel much more stable. In reality the FPS is actually more stable than Demon's Souls which is the most stable of the console versions of the Souls games

Why is IGN making such a big deal of the Bloodborne coming PC rumors from Amzaon.fr?
Saw them tweeting it a few times today, making a youtube video about it and then making another video about it in form of talking about it in the daily fix.

Is it normal to give so much coverage to accidental retailer listings?

It comes bundled with demons souls

this game is in a weird space...

At this point people know what the Soul series is, what it's about and what you "get" with it. The viewpoint people have for the series varies alot but for the most part it gets a weird "pass" regardless. At least to the people who know what they are dealing with. Really the tech side of it is what people talk up the most review wise because when it comes to the actual gameplay it's a "take it or leave it"

I really don't see that happen with other franchises. Maybe Mario.

I am this close to saying screw it and buying the US PSN version just so I don't have to wait.

Glad to hear all the praise it's gotten though.

It generates clicks which meabs more advert money. It's a great situation for them, if it's incorrect then amazon get blamed.

The hits keep coming with the reviews. Goddamn, it's hard to find a single bad word about this game.
As it should be!

I was reading the updated IGN review in progress, and about Vial stockpiles: "Unfortunately, you still have to go back to the Hunter’s Dream to automatically withdraw them from your stockpile, which seems like a design complication that could have been easily streamlined to avoid that toe-tapping loading screen."

Is it me or that is a blatant mass of bullshit hahaha? You don't even have to go back. WTF IGN hahaha.

is MT still at 93? if so that is great for the game and those involved. will buy it as soon as i can. did anything crazy happen in this thread?

? Don't you have the PS4 Bloodborne + FF Type 0 bundle like New Zealand? it's only $599 NZD here at lots of retailers. I just checked EBgames has a similar bundle over in Oz, $548 for the PS4 + Bloodborne and Dying Light or Farcry 4

Oh boy, Joe isnt liking the game at all D:

I would not play this game with a twitch stream to begin with, cause now we have a lot of angry people in the stream yelling at each other and a frustrated joe and that's never good

He seems like the kind of person who would not be into this kind of game.

I dunno, sometimes he can be into slower paced games, but with the Souls games, they've never really clicked for him. He played a bit of Dk1 and Dk2 through streaming, but he didn't get far into those games at all before quitting.

Its not helping that the community that follows him can be pretty overzealous about the games and act like a bunch of hoodlums like on the chat a bit ago for example which really makes him more resentful of the franchise.

Just lots of insults and anger flying around a 20 minutes or so ago, and even other Joe could not really calm the situation down at all. He was still close to the very beginning by that point...

Nope. Looks like bans were handed out for slightest transgression so things stayed civil. Plus with almost universal praise there isn't anything controversial to discuss.
