Bloodborne Reviews Thread

At 41 reviews its still a 93. Looks like it did in fact sustain that.

Major games usually get anywhere between 70 or 90 reviews on Metacritic so I can see the average drop by two points or so at worst. That said I'm still amazed by how well its doing. It and 3D World seem to stand as the kings of the current generation for now.

That's not an excuse, the reviews should mention that. They are very selective in these kind of criticism. The loading problem highly affects the game because you die a lot, so you have to see that fucking screen all the time.

It's funny how some developers can't optimize loading.
I was playing Injustice's "challenge mode" and the worst part is the time that takes to reload. It's not too much time, but c'mon, what they need to load again? The same stage, music, characters... there is NOTHING different each time you try!

It's frustrating.

Reviewers hardly take performance to notice. The Last of Us on PS3 was constantly sub 30fps and no one seemed to care. MCC was supposed to be 60fps but lol@ that shit. It was barely mentioned.

I am curious to see if Bloodborne causes a bump in hardware sales at all. This is the game that made me get a PS4 (in the mail now), but I am guessing most souls fans would have gotten a PS4 to start.

That is very true, good example is Telltale, their games are mess in technical side, they still get away with it constantly since stories are so good and critically acclaimed. Not saying Bloodborne has problems like Telltale games but you get my point.

not sure if posted already.

edit: review is from gamer.nl, but nu.nl is also running it.

Nu.nl 4.5/5 (Biggest news site in The Netherlands)

'With an almost perfect mix of level design, gameplay, challenge and storytelling From again released a total package that exists on a level of it's own. For die-hard Souls fans the smaller scale, and the more limited approach in gameplay might dissapoint, but those changes resulted to more attention to the all the things that Bloodborne does right. There are very few games that realise such ambitions"

I think I prefer Sony to keep it modest and realistic with the marketing and overall budget. As long as the Souls keep making a healthy and profitable 1-3 million sales, we soulsheads should be pretty safe. Dip below 1m and the series could disappear, make completely ridiculous numbers and the temptation to dumb it down to Oblivion will be a thing. Which would also kill the series, in a different way.
Shu is in love with the Souls series, so I don't see that happening.

Fantastic reviews for a fantastic game. I wish Sony spend all the The Order marketing dollars on this title instead. The Order deserves 0 sales, Bloodborne deserves 10M copies sold.

I never doubted From Software.
Both games have been getting plenty of advertising, Sony seems to have a lot more of a marketing budget nowadays. Esp with Sony changing services' name to Playstation, I expect that budget to remain the same or get even bigger with time. Also I really enjoyed the Order, so don't speak for everyone.

I'm seriously considering buying a ps4 for this.

I just hope this game makes up for everything dark souls 2 got wrong.

90? Pretty sure it's 40-70 average. Never seen 90.

It was mentioned in lots of reviews. Bottom line is that a loading screen can not come close to overcoming brilliant game design.

90? Pretty sure it's 40-70 average. Never seen 90.

Naughty Dog games usually get 90+. TLOU and UC3 got it. Major Nintendo games tend to get a lot too with Bayo 2, 3D World and Smash hovering around 80s.

It seems to be a trend with exclusives since multiplats are more spread out.

Ok, so I had Demon's Souls (even imported from the US as it took a while to come out here in the UK) and only played for like half an hour, gave up. Had no interest in Dark Souls or DS2 but the reception to this is very hard to ignore. Might have to give it a go...

from the sounds of it, don't waste your money, this game clearly isn't for you.

I'm tempted to make a thread about this channel.

Utterly brilliant

having such a hard time not busting out laughing at work due to this

holy shit at "If you think that characters should make sense, and not talk so cryptically that you think they're mentally disabled, this might not be for you"

legit almost crying right now

Who knows, I did not really care for Demon's Souls the very first time I played it and I put it away for years until I picked up Dark Souls and it all just clicked for me. For some people, all it might take is a few tweaks or even just more time with the gameplay style until they "get" it.

The Souls games/Bloodborne are very much games that many people may not enjoy till they suddenly "get it". I gave up on Demon's Souls till I tried Dark Souls then it all clicked.

I think the only way someone who didn't like Dark Souls would like this is if they were put off by the slow pace and they wanted faster more aggressive combat.

It probably didn't hamper their enjoyment. As one who has a couple of 970GTX in my 3930k machine, it certainly not bothering me. First play, than you can tell if it really botheres you, or it was just fear.

I stopped playing Demon's souls because of it. I really like the game but again, I have pretty low tolerance for that kind of thing. With a huge backlog and 2 handheld devices in top, I'd rather spend time on games that play AND run well, especially with the limited gaming time I have. I'm actually surprised this game can still have this particular problem with current-gen specs when most - if not all - PS4 exclusives are performing solidly.

That's the power of Miyazaki, babyyyy

Long live the Legendary Big M

I'm surprised it got the scores it got considering the frame pacing and loading issues. A great game it may be but these are some of my pet peeves when it comes to console gaming. I hate it when my enjoyment is hampered by technical issues. I wish more reviews are more punishing when it comes to this particular standard.

No one was saying anything about frame pacing until the df article talked about it and after no one is talking about it because it's not that big of a deal because it's not affecting the gameplay (like some sort of sub 20 fps issue might). The loading while long has been brought up in almost every review I've read but the game as a whole is so good that the loading can't even scuff how great it is.

I think demons had it worse actually. You should really give it a try if you can.

As an owner of every current gen console and PC, you absolutely should consider a ps4 for this game. I'd do it. I bought an Xbox One for Dead Rising 3, so I've done that sorta thing before.

Never been a big fan of souls.

Bloodborne though?

I am absolutely loving it. I don't know why. I think because it is faster.

Question: where do the souls games go from here? Back to sword and shield?

Surprisingly good reviews thus far for it. Not that I mean it doesn't deserve praise, it is the first "must buy PS4 for" and legitimate first "next-gen must have" game. It has some issues, but it's so good. Glad Sony funded this game to allow it to happen in the form it did. Also glad there's a patch coming because the load times are disgusting, and there's a couple performance hitches.

Hope Sony continues to build upon this franchise, perhaps invest their ICE team to help on technical aspects to make the game prettier technically because it deserves it as it has the best art I've seen in a long-long time.

Is it hard like the souls game? Only reason I couldn't get into Demon or even try the Dark ones.

I played hundreds of hours in the souls games and this game fucked me up at first. 4 hours later it became natural and i am steamrolling the game now. Just takes time to learn the mechanics and use the health regain properly.

Wait...you CAN do a plunging attack!? I just randomly pressed R2 while falling...why did they change the button lol
Because it's a totally different ip with completely different mechanics, amirite???? I mean, they changed the plunge button to r2 clearly this is not a souls game.

On a serious note it turns out I can't buy this until next week. I'll be living vicariously through you, gaf.

Man, Bloodborne is crazy fun so far. Dieing has never been so fun lol! I've been doing alot of tinkering around with the combat mechanics, and it floors me how such subtle changes completely improve the visceral reward of combat.

The main negatives I have about the game so far are what have been echoed by other. The game's load times are terrible! Waiting upwards of a minute after a death to respawn hurts the flow of the game. Another sore point is the games visuals. The art direction and geometric detail on display is absolutely stunning...but the overall image quality is pretty bad. I haven't seen post process AA this bad in a long while. Temporal aliasing everywhere, very soft/blurry image to the point where it looks like it's been upscaled, and tons of low resolution textures.

With the above negative points, I still find the game utterly beautiful however, but that's mostly due to overall art and thematic direction. To be honest, I still believe this game was originally a last gen, or at least developed with last-gen in mind before becoming a PS4 exclusive.

Kind of a dumb question, but if you die before picking up your blood echoes from the previous death, are the blood echoes you're trying to pick up gone forever? Like, the game will replace that instance of blood echoes with the new one (if that makes sense)?

Yup, your previous blood echo is replaced with the one from your current death. It works exactly the same as the souls games in this regard.

updated OP, thanks Amuse and Loudninja

looks like some of those big sites are still not done with their reviews.

if you didn't like ANY of the previous Souls games, this won't change your mind.

yes, a death will completely wipe the blood of echoes of the previous death.

As a souls veteran...I am definitely finding this one a bit harder than the previous 3. Only played about 3 hours so far, but it is definitely handing me my ass more than I was expecting.

once you get used to the parrying system with the guns, it's gonna be much easier. hard enemies are now a breeze.

Yeah I was kinda worried three games of experience would make this a breeze but I'm getting slaughtered fairly regularly.

Or... It could go up..

Even though ive still to get this (Friday) and never played a Souls game.

I am proud to see and it also proves that games dont have to be braindead easy to get high phrase

This seems plausible, I am struggling with that timing right now...multiple times I have fired thinking I was too early but I was on time...other times I think my timing is near perfect, but it is actually too late. Will just come through practice and knowing enemy attacks I suppose.

it's usually when they're about to attack or during an attack animation. gotta just shoot them often enough to see. timing def isn't as easy as the Souls games. but it made a lot of the encounters trivial compared to when i first started the game last night.
