Bloodborne Reviews Thread

Don't believe Dark Souls ever claimed the throne. It was the only heir to the throne and would take it should the King pass, as the King's bastard could not rightfully lay claim to it. However, much to Dark Souls' dismay, the King stubbornly refused to pass and his subjects continued to love him. Days ago, the King had another child and passed down the crown to him instead, greatly angering Dark Souls.

umbasa! :) ...

That's some really good opinions and scores.
I was expecting it to be good but not like this. Given it is probably the most changes a Souls game has ever seen, this is actually quite surprising and a feat.

The wait until PS4 gets cheaper will be hard :/
Have fun folks.

I'm sort of surprised so many of them have been Nintendo fans. I expected more Xbox fans to be posting the 0/10 reviews for whatever reason. In any case, it does happen with all exclusives. Sort of surprised Bloodborne is holding on to such a high score.

The same thing happens with Nintendo games, and PC games, and mobile games, and whatever else can be trolled.

There are quite a few bloodborne fans in GT. Surprising so many journos from the mainstream rallying behind a souls game. If someone had told me this sometime back I never would have thought that would happen. Cool to see From getting rewarded for their hard work so well.

Outside of GOTY snubs, I've always seen the media being favorable to Souls games. They're just not the games that usually lend themselves to support the typical pre-and-post-release 'coverage'.

But yeah, I'm loving the love I'm seeing.

I'm not surprised, Bloodborne basically takes all of the good things about Souls and cuts loose all of the bad. World tendency, losing humanity, etc. That shit sucked. Even having your damn torches go out sucked. This game is much more "friendly" about dumb shit like that while still keeping the meat and potatoes the same.

also good to see them rewarded for their ingenuity (passive online interaction) & their willingness to go against the grain (level of challenge). demon's souls, for me, was the freshest experience, & defining moment, of last gen. it ran counter to so many popular conceptions of what makes for 'good' game design...

Woah there!

World tendency was awesome... However it worked.

That is very true, good example is Telltale, their games are mess in technical side, they still get away with it constantly since stories are so good and critically acclaimed. Not saying Bloodborne has problems like Telltale games but you get my point.

Well, there's the issue really. Reviews, and review scores, are really hard to normalize. A 6 or a 7 or an 8 looks like a 6 or a 7 or an 8 regardless of the reason.

For example, Game A might be bland, boring, and just bad and get a 6.

Game B might have some performance issues that only bother some and get a 6.

Game C might be amazing, but too 'short' for $60 (or whatever) and so the reviewer tries to incorporate 'value' into the review, giving it a 6.

2 months later, Game B was patched and works flawlessly, and Game C is now on sale for, say, $30, which said reviewer would have found a great value/price. Game A is still just bad.

And so trying to incorporate too many things into a review score sort of breaks review scores. Of course, if a game is utterly broken at launch, that should be called out. It's just not a simple thing, and there's no easy answer and certainly no industry standard.

Fallout 3 on PS3, or Telltale games on any device/console, are perfect examples of games that many adore, but have terrible issues. It's hard to rank those against games that are just plain terrible, or against games that get patched later to work well (as opposed to work worse, as is the case with FO3 GOTY edition).

Loading times of 45 seconds don't bother me. Anyone remember the Commodore 64 and loading games on cassette? Go eat dinner and maybe it'll be ready to play.

The games press jumped on the Souls band wagon with Dark Souls 2.

Give me back World Tendencies... iit was one of the good things in DeS.

To be fair, GT was in on the Souls games from the start. Their 09 RPG of the Year was Demon's Souls, even though most of the press was giving it to Dragon Age. And in 2011 (Skyrim year) they gave their RPG of the Year to Dark Souls. Gamespot was the only other major site that was in from the start. Their 09 GotY was Demon's Souls.

Yup. I believe GT scored Demon's Souls a 8.9, and several staffed members were surprised by it. It was around the time U2 released.

DMC is an action game for babies compared to a souls game

Hey now, DMC can get impossible hard on some of the higher difficulty modes. No need to diss the greatest action game franchise of all time

So this thing is hard like DMC hard?

Difficulty is a touch above Halo on Legendary, I'd say.

Souls/Bloodborne have the common design where every single enemy, from the first grunts you meet to the final boss, can kill you if you mistime your attacks or just steam in and start swinging at them. So just fighting a pack of 3-4 basic human enemies at the very start of the game can easily kill you if you're not careful.

So this thing is hard like DMC hard?

Not to brag but look up my Gamertag on 360, and see my DMD cheevo for DMC3, and my MGR Revengeance difficulty cheevo...and my 1000G on Bayonetta.

From Software games makes all of these look like walks in the park. It's a different universe of difficulty and pain.

Probably would have been banned already.

YOU WILL NEVER BAN ME! I'm everyone - and no one. Everywhere - nowhere. Call me... Nintendo man.

It feels sooo nice to diss Nintendo and their fans with Bloodborne scoring this high, ain't it? :P

Geez people.

It's weird that you correlate discussion on Metacritic user review trolls with insulting Nintendo itself. The two are not the same.

But as I said earlier, this happens with all exclusives, with all platforms, so in that sense it's not inherently new. Though some of the 0/10 troll reviews for the game are entertaining to read lol.

The undertones of the discussion feels like that actually, at least for me.

Meh, we should all be happy anyways that there's finally a PS4 exclusive that pretty much everyone agrees constitute a very solid game.

Oh, can't wait to get back home with my copy waiting at me at home.... not looking forward for that 3 GB-ish 1st day patch though... WTF FROM?

wut the hell im reading here?

I dunno to be honest. DMC on DMD is harder than Souls, there is actually less margin of error since you take way more damage and taking too long against enemies makes them DT. I like both games but it seems like a strange comparison since they are completely different, unless they are talking bout DmC, which I do agree is pretty baby mode compared to most action games even on DMD.

There's a 3GB day one patch? Wut. I knew I should have installed it earlier, even if I didn't have time to play it....

Well I suppose I can play without downloading it first but considering it is for online play....

Really boggles the mind that a function as important as online play is delivered not within the game itself but through a day 1 patch..........................

I haven't even played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, or any From Software games.

What I gather is, these are "gamer's games."

That is, they really reward dedication. That, plus production values, is probably why they review so well.

That said, whenever I watch someone play, the games look kind of boring and, I don't know...clunky? Some of the best games ever are far from spectator experiences though.

Now that my brother has a PS4 I almost want to just pop in Bloodborne to see what the big deal is.

Actually, the production values are pretty middle of the road. Definitely not top of the class in terms of budget, polish, technical merits etc. All Souls games have had technical problems. They have great art direction, but the production values are actually frequently criticized with these games!

When I first started Dark Souls, I thought it was sort of clunky and janky. Over time I fell in love and realized what these games actually are is methodical. Patience and keeping a cool head is necessary. There's very little flash or bombast compared to almost every other 3rd person action game, so they're not nearly as entertaining to watch as a DMC/NG/GOW for the uninitiated.

Give it a go when you get a chance. The only way you will truly know if these are games for you is by putting 5 hours or so into it.
