Bloodborne Reviews Thread

Let me preface, I am not bashing BB. I own the game and enjoy it, however, I have a bone to pick with FROM's mentality with UI

So I picked up Bloodborne and I knew exactly what I was getting in to. A very difficult game. However, there is a mentality with the developer (FROM) that is inexcusable in my eyes and that is a lack of explanation regarding certain UI elements.

Is there no manual for BB ?

What?

I just posted an article that compares both.

You are free to disagree, but I thought it was good to look at the criticism as well as the praise.

Was the author a banned gaf poster?

Sorry kinda regretted immediately when I posted that. You are free to post anything you like actually, without me calling you out. That was wrong of me. But yeah the dude got history here.

No fucking way. He cannot be sincere with that 50 inches comment.

yes and after reading it he's wrong on so many things. Linear level design....has he even played the first level?

Are people really upset that IGN and other sites are trying to do a comprehensive review?

Yeah, all those review in progress videos they're putting up are getting tons of dislikes and are making people so salty.

Like I was legit surprised. I thought people would appreciate that they're taking time with their review instead of getting it out as soon as the embargo lifts.

I haven't even played Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, or any From Software games.

What I gather is, these are "gamer's games."

That is, they really reward dedication. That, plus production values, is probably why they review so well.

That said, whenever I watch someone play, the games look kind of boring and, I don't know...clunky? Some of the best games ever are far from spectator experiences though.

Now that my brother has a PS4 I almost want to just pop in Bloodborne to see what the big deal is.

I agree that Bloodborne doesn't seem to sell itself as well when you watch a section played online, but you're missing some context, intensity and other un-explainable brilliance that you simply can not grasp when you don't play the game for yourself. There is so much tension. Risk and reward looms around every corner. The game is hard but fair. Every encounter has to be approached tactfully. Even yard trash can take you out if you're careless.

I have Dark Souls on my PC but haven't played it much because of control issues unfortunately, so I am sort of a new comer as well with only a basic grasp on what the game has to offer. I will tell you though that Bloodborne is fucking magical. If you aren't scared off by a little bit of a challenge I can't recommend this game enough. It is a brilliant accomplishment in game design, thick with atmosphere and supreme art direction. Gameplay wise, when it clicks, you will love it. It is fun, brutal and absolutely satisfying, so far anyway. I've only had the game a couple days after all. :P

Bloodborne is amazing so far but I'm a little bummed about the lack of diversity for weapons and armors compared to Demon's and Dark Souls 1&2. However, the Chalice Dungeons might be the savior for this game.

I called in sick yesterday. I just couldn't handle it; it's all I could think about. The game is glorious beyond glorious.

Same, dude. Glad I did. It was worth it. Made it through 2 bosses, got to the 3rd. Upgraded my whip a bunch and i'm in love with it :D

I'm all for taking your time doing reviews but they've had the game for nearly a week. Is the game to hard for them to complete in a reasonable time? I expected IGN's review to be out by now and Eurogamer's will probably drop tomorrow coinciding the UK release of the game

The cane is the coolest weapon ever, I love how it morphs into a whip for crowd control. The animation is so cool when you transform the weapon and the way you hold the weapon is different when you engage the two forms (the weapon looks different too visually). It's all in the details.

For myself I was a bit worried about the more limited weapon selection early on. But I'm not minding so much, as it sure feels like there's a lot more nuance to every weapon. It's got that Monster Hunter thing going on, though it does mean there's less visual variety.

Also, the further I play the more it seems that there are core upgrades to the basic Souls formula under the hood. Things that aren't apparent at first glance. Pure game layout info:
the world evolving slowly after each boss. With new enemies appearing to surprise. Enemies that move a lot more now, patrolling zones in groups. Chalice Dungeons seem like a major thing, full of enemies and bosses crafted explicitly for them.

I think long-term my prediction for biggest disappointment is much less variety in attire/armor because Dark Souls 2 really raised the bar there, enabling major Fashion Souls action.

And I totally agree that the death reload time is absurd. Such a game absolutely should not ship with that issue, period.

can't blame IGN alone, a bunch of other major sites are still reviewing it. i'm not sure what else they're looking into before releasing a review.

So I picked up Bloodborne and I knew exactly what I was getting in to. A very difficult game. However, there is a mentality with the developer (FROM) that is inexcusable in my eyes and that is a lack of explanation regarding certain UI elements. I understand that the game is based on a lot of trial and error and you are meant to figure things out as you progress, but having certain UI elements that provide the player with zero explanation is just bad practice. Whenever you take the player out of the game and have them hunt on a website for what certain icons mean, you're ruining immersion and the focus shifts. Again, I understand that certain elements within the game you learn over time and are not explained right away, and that's perfectly fine, but when UI elements that are NEVER explained in the game but only through other player external communication or websites, you have to re-think your approach.

Yeah, as someone who just really got into Dark Souls for the first time the other day and has been doing his best to avoid going outside the game for help, a lot of the RPGish stuff is incredibly obtuse. Definitely beyond the line of encouraging exploration/experimentation and into deliberately frustrating territory. You don't learn to appreciate it, you just learn it.

What's the story behind this Jleack. Tell meh!! *gossip mode activated*

A notorious Xbox fanboy, who on occasion put out misinformation and bullshit as early review comments on games, slighting PS4 versions for issues that didn't exist. He was banned, not sure if perm but I would think so.

I was debating the starting class and weapon, but the first time I transformed the cane, I suddenly felt very validated in my selection of class and weapon.

I think the only real gripe I have so far is that it appears all classes will play similar with a heavy focus on melee and a small focus on items. I am only 2 bosses in, but it doesn't seem like there will be a big variation to that...maybe a little more reliance on items depending on build, but not a wide ranging gamut say from a havel clad knight to a magic wielder to a hit and dodge dexterity build. Kills replay-ability a bit if that is the case, but I don't know all the details yet as I stayed mostly on a media blackout, so I could be way off base.

Remember his Thief PS4 review that was just sad. Especially when people found out he was bullshitting.

He was perma banned from here for acting like a die hard Xbox fanboy. He also tweeted about how he hates NeoGAF etc. He writes for CraveOnline and his bias can be seen in his anti-Sony articles from there.

I don't really have a source at hand right now so just telling from memory.

I seem to recall him being in the 'crushed-black looks better actually because pop' camp with BF4 also. But, we have already discussed him far more that he is worth, so maybe back OT now.

its tough because the bosses have a very unpredictable pattern and are very aggressive. Since there is no block i am having a hard time dodging and timing a hit. Once i do get a hit they respond back so fast i cant dodge it.

I for one am glad they are taking their time, same with Giant Bomb

People complaining are just babies who are probably just waiting for the scores to fuel fanboy wars and not the actual review.

An interesting comparison of Dark Souls and Bloodborne. This author prefers DS for certain reasons I will not go into, but I would like to see what gaffers would agree/disagree about on this.

http://www.craveonline.ca/gaming/ar...-at-whats-better-and-worse-about-bloodborne/2

There's nothing in that article that suggests he's even played Bloodborne. I mean, I'm sure some people will prefer DS at the end of the day, and that's perfectly fine. But he provides no specifics and his criticisms are mostly generic "stuff I heard on reddit" fare. Comparing the two games at this point also seems kind of premature.
