I guess getting into this is hard for new players because they might be use to Bayonetta/DMC etc, where you just mash attacks and win. Getting out of that mind-set is what Demon's and DS will do for you.

They have the disease but in a very early stage.

Take a closer look at those humans. They aren't normal. Also most of the story comes from reading items and talking to NPCs.
