As you progress you unlock shortcuts that let you get back to where you died faster. Eventually you get to new areas where you will find another lamp that serves as a respawn and teleport point.

I have a feeling that experienced Souls players wont have too much of a hardtime with this game. Hes new and has tons of health vials and barely uses the regain mechanic. I hope later in the game it gets more difficult or aggressive...

Nope game will save automatically at all times, just leave the game and you'll continue at the same exact spot.

You don't save, you activate them. The last lamp you used is the one you will respawn at. You can also teleport between lamps and the Dream Refuge, which is the hub area. You can level up and purchase items and weapons and upgrade your equipment in the Dream Refuge.

Lanterns function only as respawn points upon death. The game autosaves all the time, so if you quit, then you are in the exact same spot when you resume.

You have to reach (not beat) the first boss before it's an option at the Rest.

You just need to activate them.

Let's just say you progress far into the game and you don't stumble upon a lantern before you die. Will you respawn at the most recent lantern? And your progress will be saved?

More like in demon's souls. You just can teleport back to the main hub.

There is no manual save. The game constantly saves your progress. Whatever lantern you last spawned at or touched will be your respawn point.

This is why I'm taking the pistol to start with. You can use that to agro enemies one at a time too.
