Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

On Gaf, I only remember Gofreak championing the feature (or, at least, not being as skeptical about it as most were). It always seemed like a non-starter to me for lots of reasons.

There were a few of us :) Having a unit in my hands now...if you forget about the right face buttons, at least, you can have the run of the back panel with a comfortable hold. Accurate, non-gestural back touch needs a visual cue mapped to a finger in contact with it, but lots of games naturally have such cues (reticules, pointers etc.). 'Picking' is the use case that requires you to see where your finger is in relation to the screen prior to contact, but there are other manipulations and use-cases that don't require that.

Devs might be reluctant to introduce its use for certain things because there are more familiar solutions to the same problems and they might feel it's a risk to try and get people to use a new solution, even if it might have some superior qualities.

In a tablet, because of the size, I think that kind of touch would have to be very centered around gestures though rather than (fast) targeting and the like. If Apple did introduce other touch surfaces I think it would help shake out appropriate and inappropriate uses for that kind of tech, that's for sure.

I have this bad feeling that I won't be able to get one at launch. I don't wanna wait a month. :(

Also, 16 GB or 32 GB?

I'm happy with my 16 GB now, but wouldn't new apps take up more storage, since they need higher res assets?

Maybe they go $549 or $599 32 GB and cut the 16 GB.

you can’t actually use it to select items because you can’t see your finger. it is not a replacement for direct touch.

at best, you can use it for some simple gesture swipes. non critical features for a few games.

at worst, simply trying to hold the vita in your hand without accidentally triggering the back panel will cramp up your hands since the grips are small and your fingers want to rest on the panel.

it’s an ergonomic issue that potentially makes it “bad” and not just ”useless"

Gestures can really make a big difference though. I love using the rear touch to zoom in my sniper scope. It's just small stuff like that that I think makes a pretty big usability difference on a handheld (where there aren't enough buttons already).

I think it might not work on a tablet. There's no place to put your hands except for on the touchpad (Vita has two grooves that fit my hands well and I don't accidentally hit the pad, which I know you say don't work for you).

I would like technology that somehow uses the camera to track my eyes so I can scroll by looking down. Maybe in the future!

Since I have my Galaxy Nexus I want an OLED screen on my IPAD. I love my Ipad 2 but damn I want more of that OLED goodness. I would watch more movies or series on a HD OLED Tablet then I would on my PC monitor.

My 2008 Pioneer Kuro plasma still has better black levels then almost all current TV sets and it still cries when it sees the blacks and contrast of my phone. Is the technology available to apple or are they investing in it?

Apple screws us over.

16GB WiFi
UK = $628
US = $499

We pay $129 extra.
You mean your government screws you over, with your 20% VAT.

$500 with a 20% tax rate is $600. $600 = £380. So that's about right.

Well, 500$ are only 370€. Why do they need to sell the cheapest iPad for 499€ and not 399€ then?
I just checked some European Apple stores and it starts at €479 in France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and at €484 in Italy. Sure, Not that much better, but still no 1:1 conversion. And that's including VAT, I assume.

Currently I have a 3G 64GB iPad 2.

Anyone skipping this upgrade and keeping their 2?
It might be wise. I just sold by 32GB 2, because I'm a sucker for shiny new things. But the 2 was like a superb version of the 1; thinner and faster. The iPad 3 sounds like it's going to be marginally thicker again, and might not be that much faster with that crazy res it has to deal with. The 4 will likely keep the same res, but fix all the flaws, much like the 2 did to the 1. Thinner and faster once again. So yeah. The 4 is gonna kick ass, obviously. But then I'm fairly confident I'll want the 5 also...

If you can get 80% of the value seems like its worth it. Nobody knows how long they will last long term and the battery is not user-replaceable

I saw that Photoshop Touch for iPad is supposed to come soon. Ofcourse it's not gonna be at the same level as the desktop PS but it's pretty interesting to see how far they could go.

What's the general consensus about the HDD size? I have my music on my iPhone and I doubt I'll be putting a tonne of video on the device. Are the iPad apps that much bigger on the iPad?

So.... is there a possibility of Apple using an OLED screen in the near future? It would be the biggest improvement an IPAD could have to me.

Iphone as well I guess. But I use Windows/Linux on my PC, Android on my phone and I like IOS on my tablet.

This way I get a little bit of everything instead of only getting to experience one OS. But sometimes I like seeing stuff from one thing implemented on another as an improvement. In this case a HD OLED screen on my IPAD.

Additionally, our sources pointed to the discontinuation of all iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G models and all iPad 2 Wi-Fi-only models (except the black and white 16GB units—at least initially) when the iPad 3 launches. This would refute rumors of Apple launching the Retina Display-packing iPad 3 as an extension of the iPad 2 line, and it would seem to back up rumors of Apple keeping the 16 GB iPad 2 around at a lower price point. The iPad 2-model discontinuation information originated from Apple product supply checks.

This could be suggesting that the iPad 3 may begin at $599 with the iPad 2 lower spec models fulfilling the $499 price point

Probably going to sell off my current iPad this week. 16gb wifi white w/ a product red leather smart cover and a belkin rear cover. What's the market look like? Can I get back $500?

I got shot down. Apparently the price stays the same.

Can't sell the cover. They have fakies for $2. Aim for $400

Apple has hitched their wagon to ultra high-res displays and OLED just isn't there yet, so don't expect Apple to take a look at it until OLED can match their resolution needs.

The best you're going to do for an OLED tablet right now is Samsungs 7.7" Tab with a true (no pentile) 720p screen. By all accounts it's a gorgeous display.

The density is just a little higher on these 'retina' displays right? The 4S has 330ppi and the nexus is at what? 316? I thought the average human eye can't see a difference beyond 320ppi? Atleast that's what Apple themselves have said. Things that stand out to me at that point are the quality of the colors, blacks, refreshrates and contrast imo and that's where OLED's have a clear advantage.

Samsung demoed 'retina display' ~10" OLED screens last yeah (both pentile and RGB). The tech is available but Apple simply isn't interested in it, probably because they won't have a monopoly on the screens.

Sort of like when the 2nd Gen 8GB iPod touch was kept around at the lower price point while the 32GB and 64GB were the true 3rd Gen devices.

I still say they just keep the 16GB iPad 2 around on the Apple refurb store and sell them at $399. Who knows, though.

Samsung has the best screens and best patents for screens for at least the next 10 years.

The flexible, see through OLED screens will be ready for mass production at high resolutions within two years. Nobody has tech as advanced as that, including Apple.

I wonder what Apple is going to do when Samsung begins releasing devices with this tech. I highly doubt Samsung is going to be helping Apple with it in anyway, and it will simply make everything else feel worthless and out-dated.

All that said. If the Ipad 3 is the same price as the last two Ipads have been at launch, I am buying one, day one.

I think it's much more likely that Samsung wouldn't be able to manufacture enough of them to fulfill Apple's demand. They sell a lot of iPads, you know.

Why would samsung cockblock themselves out of dozens of screens that Apple would pay for?

They may feel they can make a more attractive product for consumers with this new screen technology. As opposed to selling it wholesale to Apple.

Apple may also want exclusive rights to the use of the technology. While Samsung would make more by allowing multiple companies, like Amazon and Google, to use it.

You can also factor in the fact Apple is constantly messing with Samsung at every turn.

It's going to be an interesting decade, that's for sure. However it's a couple years away, so no real point in speculating about it now.

depends how close you look at the object, laying in bed my ipod touch screen is the perfect size and the retina is perfect, however an ipad 1 or 2 at that range for me would look rather blocky and you'd see each pixel easily, that kind of screen is at a better range from your lap or arms reach.

The ipad having retina does not mean you will need to hold it only a foot away from your face, it will have double the res but the screen is still 10inch, compared to a 3 inch ipod touch it's still a smaller PPI.

Samsung's now even "allowing" others to use their SAMOLED+ displays, afaik. ("allowing" because I don't know if it isn't a supply issue). Correct me if im wrong, but the Lumia 900 is the only phone without a pentile AMOLED screen that isn't made by Samsung and I think Nokia is using their own tech for this.

Samsung sell a lot of OLED screens too. They had trouble filling demand a year or two back but now they're producing tens of millions of AMOLED screens for phones. They've gone all in on this tech and have been ramping up production.

This thing cannot come soon enough. The problems my iPad is having keeps mounting. *sigh* Now I cannot download any app and the AppStore crashes.
