Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

That's pretty much how it goes for anyone. I've never met an Apple hater, online or offline, who actually owns/uses Apple products. They hate Apple by some principle.. or something. It's as irrational as you can get. The only way I would actively 'hate' an electronics company is if I bought and got burned by several of their products that were complete trash. I can't see any significant percentage of Apple haters falling under that category. They usually pride themselves on never having touched an Apple product in their lives, or something along those lines. Bravo.

It's possible.

I own an iPad and hate Apple, also had a iPhone until I switched to a Galaxy S2.

I wonder how much a first-gen 16 GB WiFi iPad will sell for on the used market. If I wipe off the screen with a microfiber cloth well enough, one would think it's brand new.

Possibly some nice tech, but the major concern is if they are still using the archaic iOS which is acceptable only on mid tier smartphones.

Is it possible to install a different OS on iPads?

I'd love to hear what OS is not archaic and how the iPhone 4s is mid tier.

Retina on iPad means having a 326 ppi screen which measures 10'' right ?

solve sqrt(x^2+(x×4/3)^2) = 326 for x
x= 195,6

195.6 * 10 = 1956
1956*4/3 = 2608

Resolution would be 2608 x 1956.
I tend to believe it could end up being 2560 x 1920. Which would be extremely cool, needless to say.

When the rumors broke that they were going to double the resolution of the iPhone, there was speculation they would raise the price. Didn't happen, and it don't think it will now.
This. Apple does not generally raise price points once they've established one. They tend to deal with any 'increase' with efficiencies in the manufacturing chain.

The price has changed over the years but it's been obscured by the more prominent carrier subsidized prices. The first iPhone was $500 (before the price drop), the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 were $600 iirc and now the iPhone 4S is $650 without a contract.

No it is not. I like Apple phones and mobile devices, but hate their computers and OSX in general. I think Apple's design translates well to the mobile space but outside of that quickly goes into the brand name crap you see with designer clothing. My Iphone is good hardware, especially when it's freed from Apple restrictions. The UI on ios is much better than anything on their regular computers.

The stuff they do with screens is brilliant though. IPS tech needs to be a standard by now, as should 120hz.

Also the resolution on the Ipad is on a 4 3 ratio, so it would be 2048x1536. I really don't get why some other company hasn't yet beaten Apple to this, because it seems like high res screens should be standard on tablets, but instead everyone else seems to wait for Apple to make a move

Legit question here: If I have an iPhone, aside from the bigger screen, What is the advantage to getting an iPad as well?

Nothing really. Ipad is a iphone with a bigger screen and no phone. It's fun to use, and many things are easier to do on it than an iphone, but there are not that many things that an ipad can do that an iphone cannot.

I fail to understand the cult of Apple.

I didn't either until I got my iPhone 4s.

It's all about the user experience.

Yes, sounds like another buzzword, but it's true. Once you get used to the user interface and "user experience" of Apple products it's hard to downgrade to something else. This is why they are so successful and have such a loyal following.

Doesn't matter. If the rumors are true, I will pick this up instead of the Vita. Others will too. This is the problem Sony is going to have to overcome.

Did I miss something, or did touch screen controls suddenly become vastly more awesome than dual analog overnight?

Anyway. To all you people who said retina wouldn't happen on the iPad: in your face.

To be fair, the new market for Android tablets is the low-cost performers. Android tablet manufacturers can't compete at a high price. I'd expect to see $149/$199 ICS tablets to be the real story of 2012.

Apple is literally leaving money on the table by not addressing the low-end market.

That's always been the case. Apple prides itself on being seen as a high-end company.

I fail to understand the cult of Apple.
I guess I'm bored enough to describe myself, not a cult member.

I've only own a 3G, didn't have a cell phone while it was broken, and then I got a 4s this month. Tried OSX on a mac mini once.

Told my dad to look at a few different android phones and the 4s and decide what he wants. Glad he went Apple because it's annoying how some Android phones can't get Ice Cream Sandwhich. I think the developer support and UI is better. There was doubt the "best" Android phone, Galaxy S II, would get it wasn't there?

So, now I'm deciding what tablet I want for my grandma. Honestly I want an OS that isn't full like Windows 8 will be, and with all the different Android versions, the UI, the developer support, and malware is a turn off.

Transformer is really tempting with the detachable keyboard and I do hope Apple comes out with a hybrid.

I'm probably missing a point here, but what's the use of an extremely high res screen, other than that it looks pretty?

Currently using an iPad 1, and I love it especially for couch web browsing and for reading pdf's. Skipped iPad 2 because I didn't really see the need for it, but now I'm in the market for a new tablet.

I have an android phone (htc desire) and I really like android OS as well as iOS. Currently debating whether I'm gonna get the asus transformer prime ( really digging the keyboard/dock) or the iPad 3.

It's more probable they do like the iphone4 and double the resolution in both width and height to 2048x1536. It's not quite "retina" resolution, but it would make apps scale nicely, which is way more important.

I'm not really up on what the Prime does but what is the difference between iPad + keyboard dock / wireless keyboard.

  1. Retina is a marketing label created by Apple. It means whatever they say it does.
  2. Jobs describe a 'retina display' as one in which the pixels are indistinguishable when the display is placed at a distance from the eye, a distance that is typical of how the device is used. Tablets and monitors are held farther from the eye than phones during regular use and so don't need the same >300dpi stat to be considered 'retina'
I'm not really up on what the Prime does but what is the difference between iPad + keyboard dock / wireless.

The Prime dock has a trackpad, a supplementary battery, various ports etc included with the meyboard. Asus and Google support those features in the OS allowing apps to make good use of it. Apple on thr other hand discontinued sale of their keyboard dock and doesn't have any plans for mouse support in iOS.

isnt the a5 800mhz x2? the touchpad gets up to 1.7ghz x2 pretty comfortably. i dont think theres a way to fairly compare the two bench wise but on clock alone id doubt any level of superior architecture could make up for a discrepancy that large.
The iPad's A5 (dual core cortex a9) is clocked at 1 GHz. My touchpad (dual core scorpion) is over clocked to 1.5GHz. The two architectures are different but the A9 is a bit more modern and faster. They should exhibit similar performance at those speeds, but the Touchpad still feels slower in everyday usage. More of a software problem.

GPU isn't even a contest.

That would make sense, however the rumor seems to imply the resolution is less the 1920x1080

I overclocked two touchpads for relatives, and was surprised that they both felt slower than my iPad 1 in day-to-day usage, let alone an iPad 2. The web browser in particular was chug-chug-chugging along. I think a big part of the Apple "difference" is the hardware-software integration, which allows for things like super-smooth scrolling in a web browser. TouchPad *should* have had hardware acceleration since it was a closed HP ecosystem, but alas. Perhaps Android users will get a taste of this with hardware acceleration in ICS.

Safe bets:

Retna display
8.0mp rear facing camera from iPhone 4S
HD FaceTime camera from MBP line
Higher clocked A6 chip
$499 starting price point
Siri (out of beta)
128gb high end model (no more 32gb)
Ram. Glorious ram.
7-10hr battery

From the text it sounds like ip3 will run at lower than 1080p res. But the rumors that Intel ultrabooks will use 2560x1440 resolution so a retina ip3 is possible and that would make apple the undisputed leader again.
specs to drive the display would require standalone graphics memory, i predict it will have 2 main cpu cores, 4 gpu cores with 1gb main ram, 256 vram. it is a beast!

Android smartphone
iPad 3

Best of two worlds.

My mind is full of...

or at least I have never met someone like you and I have met quite a lot of smartphone owners...

No wonder iPad 2 is being discounted heavily in Japan, they did the same thing a month before iPad 2 came out...think I will get an iPad 3 for my son

Really? I have an android phone and an iPad (mostly because TMO doesn't offer the iPhones and I like their pricing, but still, I like the phone).

There's no way that it going to have any other resolution than 2048x1536 if it gets a resolution bump.

Because I read a lot on my iPad screen I will probably replace my 2. My only fear was that they might underpower it but if it gets a quad core that fear was probably unfounded.

No way will they do that with the cameras and storage.

If iPad 3 has an increased resolution I will not be able to resist buying it a launch. Sadly it will mean postponing my Vita purchase until summer, since I can't afford both at the same time.

Kinda hoping Apple delays the launch a couple of months..

The price cut iPad 2 rumours are stressing me out.

I want to sell my iPad, but I don't want to be buttfucked by a price cut or be iPad-less for a few months.

Last time I sold mine to a woman who found out there was no disc drive in an iPad when I demoed it to her, and sold it for 500$. I hope I can find another tech illiterate 1% to dump my iPad 2 on in time for the new model.

Surely theyve got to be 1%ers if they have all that money, right? Like you're not just ripping off someone who just doesn't know better. Cause that would be a bit slimy.

I don't hate Apple, but I will probably never buy one of their overpriced computers/laptops. I will also never use an ipod after having trouble with a few, and I feel that using itunes to manage music really sucks ass. I'd rather drag and drop music onto my cheap sansa player and expand it on a whim with micro sd cards.

I love the ipad and will probably punt android for an iphone when my contract expires in a few months. Kind of annoying how my friends are calling me an apple hipster/fanboy now.

Oh yeah, the woman didn't really care she just wanted a toy.

"How do I get my music on here?"

...."It's called iTunes, and you can-"

"Oh I will figure it out! Thanks a lot!"

At first I felt bad, but when you give out 500 with such carelessness, ou can only be a 1%er.

What resolution does a 9.7 inch screen need to have to hit 300ppi?

Roughly 1400P, but from the article it sounds like the iPad3 will be above 720P and below 1080P. If true, it would actually be slightly lower res than a few other competing tablets coming out this year making the phrase "retina display" kind of useless for Apple.

Fair enough. I probably would have done the same.

You keep quoting this, but you do realize that's not going to happen, right? It's just a badly worded section in the article. They're not going to bump the resolution and still be under 1080P. That's absurd.
