Who cares? Is anyone actually using an iPad 2 and regularly thinking "FUCK THIS NEEDS MORE RAM JESUS".

what they hell are you babbling on and on about chipsets and processors when the only point of discussion is the display resolution to which the most logical step is a 2x upgrade? and engaging a straw man "better through infinity" future? he didn't even say that. the fuck?I see you're continuing with the same logic as before. Since Apple's A5 beat it's competitors, the A6 inherently must beat it's competitors. Similarly, since they doubled the resolution of iPhone ... they inherently must double the iPad's. While I actually wouldn't be surprised if they did double the res (simplifies scaling), I find the basis for your logic suspect. That's especially true regarding chipsets.
If anything, you're completely ignoring the past. If you expand out history to include the entire industry, a given chipset designer does not consistently have the highest performing part in a given sector every generation. Similarly, a product manufacturer does not consistently source the highest performing parts.
Sure in a small sampling that may hold true ... and it's quite possible this will be the case for iPad 3 ... but your argument stems from the assertion that to infinity, iPad will always offer the most powerful SoC or best resolution. History says that should actually not be the case.

Of course RAM is important. I have an OG iPad with 256 MB RAM, apps crash all the time and I can't browse sites with many pictures.
They'll release it with however much RAM is needs to work as well or better than the iPad 2. It really doesn't matter what amount is, so it's weird when people are demanding a specific amount.

Okay that sounds more reasonable.I'm not trying to imply infinity. I'm talking about 2012. Who knows 10 years from now. Keep in mind, I was talking about benchmarks, where the software does factor in.
As for the resolution bump, that's just obvious. It's a strategy that paid huge dividends for them before, combined with very similar market conditions in the lead up, combined with common sense.
Predicting anything other than a pixel doubled display is a bad prediction at this point, given all we know. The only other option would be to hold off another year if they still can't source them, but I don't see that happening again.
Actually I've seen a number of people complain about its impacts on web surfing, etc. Regardless, increasing resolution will obviously only make the situation worse, not better versus iPad 2.Who cares? Is anyone actually using an iPad 2 and regularly thinking "FUCK THIS NEEDS MORE RAM JESUS".
Read the actual conversation I was having throughout the thread.what they hell are you babbling on and on about chipsets and processors when the only point of discussion is the display resolution to which the most logical step is a 2x upgrade? and engaging a straw man "better through infinity" future? he didn't even say that. the fuck?
Who was demanding a specific amount? Me and brotkasten certainly didn't.They'll release it with however much RAM is needs to work as well or better than the iPad 2. It really doesn't matter what amount is, so it's weird when people are demanding a specific amount.
They are demanding "more than before" and the funny thing about RAM is that it comes in predictable increments.
But logically it won't.I should have said "specific upgrade". I just don't understand demanding "more than before" when "before" is fine as it is. It was the same with the 4S - loads of people demanding 1GB of RAM, turned out to have 512MB, cue bawwing from said people about it. Turns out it doesn't really matter.
If the specs stay exactly as they are in the iPad 2 but the resolution is doubled and everything runs as smoothly, I will be totally fine with it. So will most other people, I imagine.
People saying things like "I will only buy it if it's quad core/has 1GB of RAM" just makes no sense to me.
But the iPad will need both a quad core and 1GB of RAM in order to preserve the smooth user experience of the iPad 2. Not to mention a beefier GPU with a better fill rate.
Its simple, double the screen resolution means you will need double the power and memory in order to drive it and delver the same experience. That's why people are making those statements.
And other people have said similar things.just sold my iPad 1 in preparation. If its a quad core, I'm buying an ipad3. If its the same internals as the iPad 2, just with a retina display, then I'm buying a (hopefully discounted) iPad 2
Well the way memory is actually fabricated, it's logical to assume 1GB would be the amount since it wouldn't force major layout changes to the MoBo (they can use the same number of memory modules). This is the reason why you typically see RAM values double when they increase. The actual memory modules themselves are typically only available in multiples of two.Oh, of course. There is definitely going to have to be a bump to cope with that resolution. I'm not saying that I really want the specs to stay the same, I just want the whole experience to be at least as good if not better and will be fine with whatever the spec is to accomodate that.

Skipped the iPad 1 and 2 for the Jesus Pad, BRING IT ON APPLE
So we've had all these rumors about display upgrades for the better part of a year now, but I'm really curious about the software side of things. Obviously anyone's guess is as good as mine, but I'm really interested to see a new crop of Apple developed iPad apps, or even a new update to iOS5.
Why? I mean, what difference does it really make to how you use it if it's quad core? It's not like the iPad 2 is noticeably slow or anything.
Any CPU upgrade isn't going to be a big deal either way. A quad core A9 isn't going to make all that much difference, you're going to want to wait for the A15 based ipad 4 if you want to see a real increase in performance outside of games.
I dont understand all this retina crap. Its just marketing hype. What can you do with this magic retina stuff that you cant do with 800-600?
Is this just apples way of saying "we've got absolutely nothing new we can think of, so here, we have this!"
What will the ipad4 be? Encases in a more tightly bonded metal? More atoms = smoother, buy it now!

Android smartphone
iPad 3
Best of two worlds.
Don't care about real performance in apps, just games. Don't expect mine to be a productivity tool.

What I know want to know is that: was Honeycomb so bad that iOS on the iPad was deemed the king of tablets by a landslide? I know that build quality/batterye life is another factor, but I just want to focus on this one aspect of tablets.

Everything isn't going to run "as smoothly" in a system that pushes four times the pixels if the RAM stays exactly the same.

A quad A9 isn't going to make all that much difference there either. Its what they do with the GPU that really matters.
That's probably what will happen. It'll be faster like the iPhone 4 was a little faster than the 3GS, but the speed and efficiency benefits will be eaten by the display this year.Do we have any rumours/guesses about the GPU? My main concern is if this is a retina bump and we have to wait for iPad 4 for a power bump.
The iPad 2 hardware is already capable of handling a fill-rate 4x as much as its current screen.ipad2 786432 pixels [1024x768] @dualcore
ipad3 3145728 pixels [2048x1536] @ quadcore
Thats four time as much pixels, and only double performance gain with same tech [it will be cortex A9 again, maybe even clocked lower than ipad2].
I would rather want Ipad3 with quadcore and same display as ipad2.

It cracks me up how some of you get so personally offended because Apple made up a memorable marketing term to explain a technological advancement that may be too abstract or confusing to some people that don't understand computer screen resolutions. Of all the things to get upset about, you pick this?

Wow, how did people ever use a 3GS? You can't even read the screen.
You're not going to get better frame rates in games that choose to render at native resolution, that should be obvious. With the shrink to 32nm, Apple should be able to roughly match performance by simply adding a couple SGX543 cores and upping clocks to ~300mhz+ assuming memory bandwidth doesn't become a bottleneck.I realise that. I guess I assumed that an improved GPU would come along with a quad core CPU. Maybe I've just been looking at Vita specs for too long
