Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

Yes, but that's not Apple's tech, and they won't use it in the iPad3.

I'm talking about the A6, which, according to CNET, isn't going into production until June 2012, the earliest.

The silicon will change, the higher resolution necessitates it and Apple aren't going to pass up the opportunity of a die shrink. Whether that means we'll get quad A9s or not isn't all that big a deal imo, an increase in clockspeed and RAM will suffice.

I'm amazed mostly by one thing: How quickly many Apple consumers will immediately migrate to the latest device.

Even considering a retina display, these specs wouldn't impress me enough to part with $699 and abandon an iPad 2 that's less than 2 years old (and still bests probably 90% of the devices available). Yes, these specs sound like the Omega of tablets, but similar to HDTVs, there's little actual return for the high cost of upgrading every 12-24 months.

That's why the smart people only upgrade their Apple products on a 2 year cycle instead of every year. This will be a nice and massive jump up from my iPad 1.

Fair enough. I'm there day 1, either way. My iPad 1 runs like crap now.

That analyst report is based on the A6 being cortex a15 based (going by the 28nm process). They can still easily produce a quad core A5.
Or even keep it dual-core and improve the GPU and increase RAM to compensate for the higher resolution.

In my experience people buy the latest Apple product and hand down the old one to someone else. They mentally write off the cost of the new one as giving a gift.

Thats a hilarious picture.

Revisionist history at its worse.

How were people able to play NES text-based games with a resolution of 256x240. With that logic, it would be unreadable!

Looks, Im all for upgrades, but if your selling point is "more pixels!" .....well, thats not a selling point. Its about as great a marketing campaign as "coors light is cold"

Thats nice. Now give us substance plz.

You are honestly fucked in the head.

This is your rebuttal to having been called out?

Let's not try to pretend that your 3GS looked like that pic either or anywhere near close to it.

I can read very fine text on the iPhone 4 screen. I can't read fine text on the 3GS screen. So yeah, it's the same as that pic minus the extreme zoom. The 3GS screen doesn't look bad in person but under practical use (like reading small-medium text the difference is huge.

Yeah a good test for the difference in readability that the new screen offers is safaris tab mode. load up a page on both devices and then hit the tab button. youll still be abel top read thie text on the retina display but on the 3gs it will be blurry beyond recognition.

I'm giving my iPad 2 to my parents as is my wife and picking up the new hotness.

I went from not seeing a point in getting an iPad at all (only bought it for tax purposes originally) to it being my most used home device.

Newsflash: iPad 1 always performed like it currently does. If anything iOS5 made it a bit faster. The new hardware is just that much faster.

iOS 5 made it faster in some areas and added the much needed multitouch gestures, but it has made Safari and many other apps (Twitter being the biggest offender for me) crash quite often. Many web pages I have to sit and wait for everything to load before attempting to scroll, otherwise it crashes out.

I am jumping on an iPad 3 just because of the speed decrease.

Fair enough. I'm there day 1, either way. My iPad 1 runs like crap now.

Same with my girlfriend's iPad 1. To me, this is a reason to not buy the new iPad.

But that's part of Apple's plan! Release an OS update, make older devices run like shit, make them buy the new one.

My iPad 1 runs like shit too. Not so much general performance, just a massive increase in the number of apps that crap out to the dashboard/desktop before they launch. So I sold it. However, I think I finally learned to stop updating so much. If I'd kept the iPad 1 on its original software and ignored the update, it would have been fine. And there was nothing particular in the update that was worth the pain that has been caused.

So even when I buy an iPad 2 or iPad 3 (depending on what Apple put in the iPad 3), I'm not going any further than iOS 6. When 7 comes out it can piss off.

I'm the exception to the rule because my iPad1 seems to be running just fine on iOS5. Most of the complaints I hear about performance seem to relate to Safari, but that's never really an issue for me as I don't use Safari that often on the iPad. You're more likely to find me running an app, playing a game, or watching a movie than you are to find me browsing the web via Safari.

AllthingsDigital which has an accurate record of iPads said this just now

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: Available for purchase a week or so after the event.
As for the next-generation iPad itself, sources say it will be pretty much what we’ve been led to expect by the innumerable reports leading up to its release: A device similar in form factor to the iPad 2, but running a much faster chip, sporting an improved graphics processing unit, and featuring a 2048×1536 Retina Display — or something close to it.
If 2011 was the year of the iPad 2, will 2012 be the year of the iPad 3? Said a source familiar with the device: “What do you think?”
An Apple spokeswoman declined comment on the timing of the event, saying the company does not comment on rumors and speculation.

Jim Dalrymple of the loop who is also uncannily accurate of iPad rumors replied to the rumor above

My wife already told me last night she wanted this day one. She is using my old iPad 1 now while I am using a iPad 2.

I can't wait to pick up an iPad 3 in March. I hope the Macbook Pro redesign gets released at the same time. My bank account will be hurting though.

So iPad 3:

- Retina Display
- Dual Core A6 (faster, but not quad-core)
- Slightly thicker
- Better battery
- Better back camera
- Same pricepoints

...you in?

You forgot (much) the better GPU.

I'm totally in.

Should I really care about potential lack of quad core?

Would the quad core make a huge difference in my user experience? Please explain . . .

I'm so in btw

More RAM and a better GPU for the retina display are more important.

I'll kick a puppy if the iPad 3 comes with 512 MB RAM.

Totally in for my first iPad probably 32GB. Turning the old Core Duo MB into a media server.
I don't even care if it is QC or DC, I've got a QC 2011 MBP for when I need real power and I'd rather have the battery life.
I also hope it supports Thunderbolt syncing.

Wouldn't quad-cores suck the life out of the battery at a much faster rate too? Granted they could be smart and shut off when not used but I could see the battery dying quick playing something like Infinity Blade at that resolution with all 4 cores going. But I am no expert. As long as it performs at least as fast as my iPad 2 with the retina display then I'll be happy with 2 cores.

Yes for the retina alone. I have a lot of book scans that I can't read without having to zoom. With retina they should be clear. Comic books should be much better too. And zinio.

I only hope they have a 128GB option this time. I use mine for work as well as entertainment and my 64GB iPad2 is always full.

Same with my girlfriend's iPad 1. To me, this is a reason to not buy the new iPad.
Unfortunately I'm realizing that you have to not update your iOS device if you want it to run smoothly. They add new features that purposely make your old model run slow enticing you to buy a new one.

YES COMICS!!

I hope Marvel or DC announces some kind new interactive comics line of some kind and the March event.

Also this . . .

Apple now worth more than Google and Microsoft combined

The prospect of reading comics & my Zinio subs on a retina tablet excites me. Still debating what to do (currently have iPad2).

Test it on the resell market. If you sell it...great, get a iPad 3. If it doesn't sell, then no worries!

That's what I did. I would have been fine with keeping the iPad 2 for another year, but a family member offered to buy it from me.

Disgusting that they would actually do this to their own devices. It's noticeable though, my iPhone wasn't always this fucking useless.

March seems too early for a cortex a15, unless cupertino really pulled some magic from arm. I wouldn't expect it.

I'd be upgrading from an iPad 1, but would like to keep the old device around. Question is, what do I do with it? Cool cook book? Media control device? Leave it in the iCade on a pub table for guests?
