Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

That was according to the article from bloomberg a few weeks ago. It said that the ipad 3 will have a higher resolution than some HDTVs, suggesting below 1080p.

Right now, I think doubling they're going to either double the horizontal and vertical resolution of the iPad or of the iphone 4. So maybe 1920X1280 or 2048X1540.

I'm pretty sure that's a less than most users, I usually use about double the number of tabs on any device.

You're just determined to be wrong about the resolution, aren't you? Lol.

It's going to be 2048x1536.

iPhone 4? The aspect ratio isn't even the same. It's going to double the current resolution of the iPad.

I don't think a A15 is going to be that much faster than a A9 quad core

How many tablet apps are properly optimised for 4 threads? Single core performance is the most important metric and the A15 decimates the A9 there. Heck, considering you can comfortably run dual A15s at ~2ghz at 32nm, they'd still beat quad A9s even if your application is well optimised for 4+ threads.

This means that wallpapers will need be 2048x2048 to look decent. FUCK.

& app icons will be something like 150x150 pixels, right?? Can't wait.

And that sharp screen that leaked was 2048x1536 the other day. Aka retina and not sub-1080P.
You were quoting a post of mine from about a month ago, where I was commenting on the article in the op...the wording in that article suggested sub-1080p. The current rumors suggest doubling of the iPad 3 res. I'm guessing that the earlier a rumor is reported, the less reliable it is.

But if they could figure out a way of getting iphone apps to work well on the iPad, then just doubling the iphone 4 res would also work. That's a pretty big if but the difference in pixel density would be 238 ppi vs 264 ppi so it wouldn't be a big difference in how sharp the screen looks.

Apple is planning to introduce an upgraded version of its iPad tablet at a press event early next month, according to people briefed on the company’s plans.

An Apple employee said that the version of the new iPad that is being tested inside the company is “essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2,” with an improved and “truly amazing” screen. The tablet will include a faster processor, said the employee, who did not want to be identified because Apple is not fond of leaks.

I fully expect the ipad 2 to continue on sale but at $399 not $299.

Probably. If this is the case, the iPad 3 might come in at $599. I can see them doing 3 models:

iPad2 WiFi w/ 16GB - $399
iPad3 WiFi w/ 32GB - $599
iPad3 w/ 64GB and 3G - $799

Or something like that - I can't see them continuing to produce so many models.

It's the most used device I own, so yeah.

I use my MacBook Pro the most and I'm too updating on day 1. I wish 32GB is standard this time with 64 and 128GB available. I'd use my iPad 2 more if it didn't feel slow, laggy and unresponsive at times. It needs more memory more than anything, 512MB doesn't cut it when you have lots of tabs open and other apps in the background.

yawn. Talk to me when apple gets in the content creation with their tablets ala windows 8 intel tablets.

They are already there, since the original iPad actually.

Quad core is definitely not a sure thing. I think dual core is more likely. Especially if LTE is in.

I don't understand those hanging on RAM specs. Whatever it is, you can pretty much guarantee it'll be the fastest and smoothest user experience out there. We never find out until a post-release teardown anyway. 1gb does seem likely if it will be supporting high-res assets though.

I would agree with you except for two things:

1. Safari Safari Safari Safari. It needs all the RAM it can get. I'm sure everybody would love not having any tab reloads, which is potentially possible with 1GB.

2. 512MB of RAM would be good enough for an iPad 2, 2011 type of experience. I have a feeling that we're going to see the iPad's functionality majorly increase in 2012 with the next iOS in response to the competition of Android and Microsoft.

$499
Keep the non-retina base model an sell it for $299 - put the Fire on notice.

I'm sure they have a plan along those lines and if they are indeed working on a smaller iPad (still a lot of rumors that they are), that is likely to be more in line with the Fire price. In any event, Apple is still so strong in the market that they don't really have to compete on price at this point. The demand for their products is so strong that price is the ONLY competitive position that most competitors have.

Awesome. I can't wait till there's an Android tablet with that kind of screen.

The resale value on Apple stuff is insane. I bought my 16gb iPad 1 Wifi on clearance last year for $398, there's one of the same model up on ebay now with 20 bids and at just over $300, most of the others clearing $250. Maybe I'm just used to other electronics stuff plummeting in price.

Hello iPad 3 funds...

I think it's the fact a lot of the general public is really oblivious to how the revisions work. iPad is an iPad to them plain and simple.

i dont understand why consumer PC displays have stagnated... mostly all 1200p/1080p IPS displays for the high end now while we are getting SoC powered smartphones hitting 720p and tablets hitting even higher

i used to have a dell 6000 laptop back in 2004 or so and that thing had a 1920x1200 res 15" display.. thing was freaking awesome... my modern 24" IPS display is only 1080p

Hopefully the high PPI push in mobile + Apple's upcoming high PPI push in the MacBook/iMac will force monitor manufacturers to get off their lazy asses.

Because manufacturers got the genius idea to jump on the HDTV and "Full HD!" hype train, market their monitors as that, so they could use the same production lines for both TVs and monitors and people totally fell for it. It might be a bit hyperbolic, but it's one if the biggest scams in IT. "Hey, here's this new awesome 24" monitor and it got a lower resolution and a worse aspect ratio than the one you bought 3 years ago!". Same goes for 22" or 30" screens.

Huh, that is very strange. I can juggle a ton of tabs on iPad 2 without a hitch. I usually have about 6 open at a time.
Sometimes, that works for me too. I actually tested it in-store before buying; opened nine heavy web pages in Safari, started up *every* installed app on the device to drain memory, and switched back to Safari. The app had to restart, but every page was intact, no reloading.

Made a fairly positive impression on me back then, however when I use my own iPad 2, background tabs are killed very often. It even happens with just two or three pages loaded, and no apps running besides Safari. Kinda strange, to say the least.

I should really sell of my 1st gen iPad.

Amazon Trade in offer seems pretty good. Maybe I'll just do that. I can basically have half the iPad paid off.

that's a bit dramatic.

my understanding is that because TV manufacturers were moving to 16:9, making 16:9 computer screens would become cheaper (because of all the volume).

16:9 saved computer manufacturers money. It's not because they had a genius idea for a new hype train...unless you mean they had a genius idea to save money.

iPads are useless to me unless Apple makes a sub-8" one, but my mom loves the iPad 1 I bought her. She has recently been complaining about how sluggish it is, so the iPad 3 should be a great upgrade.

iPad 3 rumors? Perfect day to get my first and only scratch on my launch day iPad 2 screen. Mother $&!@@#%!!!!

Oh well.

pretty content with the ipad 2, which i bought new for $350 6 months ago. was a good upgrade from the 1 imo.

will probably wait till the ipad 4 comes out before i upgrade.

Speaking of the RAM, just how much of a speed bump will we be seeing, when you factor in the fact that it's a 2048x1536 screen. Are we really talking significant differences here?

Oh well.

Considering you have launch hardware, you most probably have some light bleeding going on somewhere on your screen. I would just bring it back to Apple and get a new one and then sell it. That's what I did a month ago, it's a nice selling point too.

People are hoping for 1gig, but there's no guarantee here. The only thing we know is that Retina is pretty much a lock. More powerful dual core? Quad Core? 1gig ram? Thicker or same size? Who knows.

Ah tristate area Gaf I will be in Delaware picking up my tax free iPad 3 if all these rumours are true. I might be inclined to pick up two at launch if I can.

Reading my magazine subs are going to be SO much better on iPad 3. Same with things like Flipboard. God, they need to announce this thing already!

Also it's funny seeing tech blogs saying "competitors are hitting 1080p, what about you Apple?", so far only Asus is hitting that res any time soon (and maybe Sammy), even then iPad 3's res is going to be the best of the best for a while...just like when iPhone 4 came out.

I wonder how many developers are already getting ready for this. I hope it doesn't take months before we see nice retina supporting apps (like flipboard and other big names).
