I'm looking at it as coffee table computing. For portability I have my iPhone. For proper productivity anywhere I have a notebook. For hanging out on my couch I am getting an iPad.

The iPhone will feel claustrophobic after you get the iPad.

It is totally serviceable, but you really notice how cramped it is after prolonged iPad use.

I know this is kinda off-topic but ey need to work on their damn iBooks.

Reading A Storm of Swords and the book cover and maps aren't proportionate to the page (or anything).

Take some pride in your work, FFS.

I think they are formatted by the publisher, but I could be wrong about that.

Means I'll only be using it at home. In other words, does it bring a lot to the table that my PC can't do, enough to justify the money?

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm tempted. Surfing on the couch while watching TV sounds like paradise, heh.

Yeah, it's awesome for that. Couch browsing is exceptional. Reading a long article while holding it like a book is so good.

That's the publishers fault. I have 1-4 on Kindle, and 5 on iBooks, the maps suck on all of them.

I ended up downloading high res versions of the maps as a PDF.

I'm considering buying an iPad 3. I never owned a tablet before and I have a 4S. Is Te iPad really just an iPhone with a bigger screen? Obviously minus the phone part. I don't see any major need for getting an iPad but I'm a sucker for new tech. Can someone who has both an iPhone and iPad tell me an honest opinion. Is the iPad something I could use taking notes in class or typing up essays on? Can you get a good pace going on the keyboard? I have an iMac and sometimes regret selling my MacBook pro for those times when I want to just lay in bed and type up school work rather than sitting at my desk on my iMac.

The apps on iPad are far far more robust than iPhone. For long form typing a bluetooth keyboard is necessary IMO. It's a great lounging computer, it's geared towards consumption rather than creation however. Not saying you can't do creation on the iPad, but it's a bit more cumbersome compared to a laptop. Also if you're a heavy multitasker on a PC/Mac, iPad can't really compete in this regard. If you routinely have tons of tabs open, as well as other programs all running at the same time, iPad just isn't going to compare. That said, the new multitasking gestures makes using the iPad far better than it was in the past, you can pinch with five fingers to go back to the home screen, swipe with four fingers up to bring up the multitasking bar and swipe with four fingers left and right to move between open apps. It's really really nice and makes the iPad far more useable for people that like to hop between apps constantly. There's also the split keyboard that makes typing far easier when holding the iPad with two hands in portrait or landscape. While I don't think iPad is a complete laptop replacement, it is getting closer and closer with every new iteration. If you're usage case is more about content consumption with light creation (or heavy with a physical keyboard), then go for it.

Gonna be throwing in my ipad2 for the new one. Can't wait, but I don't know how you guys can sell so early. It's sad but I'd very much miss my iPad if I didn't have it around. Gonna spring for the 32gb this time, since I've been juggling for space on the 16gb. HYPE!

Xtrasauce, I have my pc hooked up to the tv in my lounge and I still use iPad for couch browsing. It's worth it IMO.

Going to try and sell my 32gb iPad 2 for $520. No way I can miss out on even one day of iPad 3 use. Excited to see what new apps they off with the tech.

This is something no one is talking about, but I'm excited for this too. Apple announced iPad 2 with Garageband and iMovie, can't wait to see what they've cooked up for iPad 3.

2048 x 1536 is a lot of gd pixels for a tablet to push. I don't know how they're going to do that without sacrificing a lot of battery life compared to the iPad 2.

I've borrowed a friend's for a few days, to see how I would use it, and I found that aside from email I did completely different things with it or just played iPad games. I know what you mean though. It is a very different animal where there's overlap.

Supposedly the logic board is a lot smaller than the one on iPad 2 (i.e. more room for a bigger battery). Lets hope they can still hit the 10h mark, I will be super impressed if they can.

Getting ready to get Gazelle quotes for my two iPad 2's before the value tails off. Have 30 days to ship them, so--win.

I'd only try to sell something to Gazelle if you strike out on Craigslist. Throwing away hundreds of dollars by going with Gazelle.

Well they're offering $250 for 16GB Wifi.

I don't imagine I'll get a huge amount higher on Craigslist to cover the annoyance factor. Especially considering every time the buyer tries to armwrestle on price once you show up.

You could easily get $100 more on Craigslist. Easily.

LTE confirmed by WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204062704577221960347109978.html?

Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. will sell a version of the coming iPad that runs on their newest fourth-generation wireless networks, according to people familiar with the matter, as the battle to cash in on big investments in mobile broadband heats up.

Apple Inc. appears to be planning to announce the latest version of its tablet computer in the first week of March, according to another person briefed on the matter.

Whether other carriers will also sell the device couldn't be learned. Sprint Nextel Corp., T-Mobile USA and Apple declined to comment.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless are the only two U.S. carriers that currently sell the iPad, and are also the only two that offer the fast, next-generation wireless technology known as LTE.

Both companies are banking heavily on LTE to attract new subscribers and to get existing subscribers to upgrade to more lucrative monthly smartphone and tablet contracts. Apple's new iPad, which will work on those LTE networks, would give the country's two largest carriers a device that could help drum up demand for the faster service, in the way the original iPhone dramatically increased demand for 3G wireless data plans.

Verizon Wireless, the country's biggest wireless carrier by subscribers, has invested heavily in its LTE network, which now covers more than 200 million people.

AT&T, Verizon Wireless's biggest competitor, is playing catch-up. Its LTE network covered 74 million people at the end of last year. Chief Executive Randall Stephenson says the network will cover 80% of the U.S. population in 2013.

The carriers have sold millions of smartphones that work with LTE, but coverage gaps and a tendency for devices to burn through battery power while hunting for the network have led many users to keep the LTE option on their phones switched off.

When LTE isn't available, the new iPad will default to a slower network technology, one of these people said.

Richard Doherty, director of research firm Envisioneering Group, said an LTE iPad would test how well carriers' networks could handle heavier data use. He said Apple's current iPad, the iPad 2, which works with third generation wireless networks, consumes on average about four to eight times the amount of data as an iPhone.

4G networks are expected to generate even greater amounts of traffic, as their faster speeds will let users watch entire movies over wireless networks instead of short clips.

"The new iPad will test carriers to see how robust their networks are," Mr. Doherty said.

Look up two posts.

within my family we already have ipad1 and 2. one of the most impressive thing about iPad is how sound they are, iPad one has been physically abused and it still ticking, unbelievable .

I Think I am going to pass on this one, I don't use 3G, pretty much wifi only.

But you never know. iPads are amazing.

You are seriously underestimatng the value of your iPad 2s. Hell, 250 is about what the 16GB iPad1 goes for.

Don't get your hopes up. I would be very surprised to see LTE in the iPad before the iPhone.

Yeah but Apple could make it a policy or something.

I have all this display and shitty dimensions on everything. Looks ugly.

Heh, yeah but then we'd get the 'omg Apple forcing their rules on publishers!' posts or something.

Hopefully with the explosion of ebook sales publishers will start to focus on the formatting of them universally.

I just don't get what's so difficult about making a eBook with proper dimensions.

Also I think graphics/artwork is wholly underutilized on iBookstore, in general.

Hopefully Apple has come up with some kind of revolutionary battery technology to go along with this.

The combination of retina + quad core processor + LTE seems like it would absolutely destroy battery life.

Oh man...iPad 3. My fiancé will love this, since she's getting my iPad 2. The only thing I'm weary about is the price. My 32 gig has just over 18 gigs free. If the price does indeed go up, I don't think I'll be able to justify the price of 32 gigs again. Need dem prices.

E: Also, here's to another half-day of work while I go sit in line and and wait. At least I'll have my Vita and something to do.

Good point. Would be interesting to know exactly what battery life would be.

Retina is just a buzz word. It is simply a TFT LCD display with a high resolution and pixel density. The LCD displays Apple use are certainly bright, but it will eat batteries like a motherfucker.

superAMOLED is potentially better technology, but then it would probably push prices up and I'm not sure Samsung is even ready to push that kind of pixel density. The benefit of that technology is better contrast and colour reproduction while using less battery power. Not going to happen though I imagine.

TFT? What?

TFT? What?

What are you asking me?

Retina doesn't mean anything other than high resolution and pixel density. No one else uses it other than apple. It is just a buzz word to make it seem 'new'. It's not really though, it's standard LCD technology.

HD super AMOLED +/super AMOLED/OLED is newer technology. It uses a different process than standard LCD.

He's referring to how the iPad 3 will have to push an extremely high number of pixels.

I'm wondering why you think the display in the iPad is not an IPS display but rather a standard TFT panel.
