Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

They need to bump the cameras because low megapixel cameras would look even more awful on a 4x display.

But wouldn't the 5 MP iPhone 4 camera be good enough for that resolution?

Fuck, macrumors is now reporting that the iPad 3 has a 8 megapixel HD rear camera too and quite possible a HD front camera for FaceTime.

So...
Retina Display
4G LTE
8 megapixel HD rear camera and HD front camera
Quadcore CPU
Quadcore GPU and a gigabyte of ram?

This coming refresh sounds amazing.
I hope they call it the iPad 2S.

Hopefully they will continue to take reservations after launch. I don't know how long it was, but last year people were lining up for weeks (months?) after launch, and this year is going to be even more insane.

No one can say for sure. If Apple drops the price of the iPad 2 to ~$350 and starts the iPad 3 (or iPad 2S) at ~$600 then I wouldn't expect there to be any stock shortages two weeks after launch—unless there are manufacturing problems we don't know about. Apple has new factories in Brazil this year too that might enable them to ramp up production to quickly meet any demand. Or perhaps the OP lives near Apple campus and can stroll down to the best stocked Apple Store in the world (I think). No one knows.

If the iPad 2 goes to $350 or less I think that would be pretty big, since most would expect 399. I still think the iPad 3 will cost 499 for wifi, 629 for wifi+3G/4G 16gb. Apple tends to maintain the same price even when they add significant features. I'd be really surprised if the base price goes above 499.

edit: ^what am I looking at in your avatar? Dark haired woman making out with someone in Bape hoodie?

I cannot wait to get rid of my OG iPad. It's so slow and Safari refreshes and crashes too often. Good riddance!

Even though I don't really like the idea of taking pictures with the iPad I do think it'd be kind of cool to have a 10 inch screen to look through. It could make for some cool AR stuff.

Where do you live?

That won't really matter. It was impossible to just walk in and get one nation wide for iPad 2 for about 4 months. People always lined up outside of stores when new shipments came in. With bigger hype for 3 it wil be even worse.

I suspect it will be 6 months before you will ever find one in a store unless you lineup outside hours before a store opens when new shipments get in. If you want one at all preorder online.

wow if they drop an 8mp camera in the 3 I'll have to get it. I love my 2 but the cameras are kind of shit tbh.

edit: I live in the middle of nowhere and the local walmart has been out of stock regularly since they dropped. they appear on the shelves and disappear immediately.

If it is a retina display, I can't see how there won't be shortages, unless retina is higher price. They had trouble getting adequate displays for the iPad 2, even though they already were mass producing those screens for about a year.

The iPad 2 line was insane, I got to the Apple Store like four or five hours early and still barely made the cutoff. Was forced to buy the high-end 64GB model cause that was all they had left in stock and I didn't want to go home empty handed.

Hopefully they let people pre-order and pay in advance this time, because the demand for this is going to be much larger.

I wonder how long apple.com/store will last, when they open up the orders for the new iPad. I know I'm gonna order it at the very minute of availability.

Yup. A6 will be reserved for the Cortex A15 in the next iPhone. March was way too early. This'll probably be a quad core A9 or higher clocked dual core A9.

iPad's sold 55 million in 2010 & 2011 combined. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Apple can actually make that many that with iPad 3 Apple could sell another 55 million this year alone. THe demand is going to be insane.

The chances of a better camera are quite good, as the reason for the terrible iPad camera is it's thickness, or lack thereof. Going by rumors, the iPad 3 might be a bit thicker, so...

iPad 2X with A5X.
ROFL. That would be an interesting name, lol. Actually, it fits almost too well, with the new screen resolution and all.

Anyway, I suppose we can expect a minimum of 768 MB RAM. Quite a few (all?) competing tablets should have reached that level by now.

I think thickness was always an excuse.

There will be better cameras simply because low resolution photos will look like ass on a retina display.

Regardless of the core count, you can bet it will outperform everything else at release. I doubt Apple wouldn't be dumb enough to put a weak cpu in that can't adequately power the high res display. It'll be snappier than the iPad 2 AND have the new display most likely. Apple doesn't care much for spec sheets, as long as it delivers a smooth experience.

Surprising that the chip was manufactured in November?

If he doesn't live in the USA then his country might not get it by late March

yeah, the selling timeof 5pm last year sucked t

Hey! That's not funny! :(

Prepare yourself for the internal defense force. The iPad will have this same resolution for years to come. It needs to push more pixels than many dedicated PC GPUs. Future iPads will have better GPUs, but work with the same resolution. You are once again working with early adopter tech.

But that screen will be glorious...

The next iPhone will have what's in the next iPad.

I will laugh if this is slightly underpowered, making some people compare it to the OG iPad experience, and desiring better specs for the 2013 iPad.

that's simply the way Apple does business in the mobile space. "just enough".

just enough.

Eh. I don't see them wanting to fall behind when all the high end phones in 2H 2012 will have the A15.

I don't see how they'll let their supply chain become so messy with a different iPad chip from the iPhone. One reason for their huge margins in the iPhone business (still the largest business) is that the expensive SoC has basically been in mass production in iPads for 7 months already. You can spit out almost 40 million iPhones last quarter because the chip was "old." If they're introducing a brand new chip for this fall, could they make 80 million of them for the holiday quarter?

And people don't care if they have a quad-core A9 or a quad-core A15.

Yeah, but hopefully the end-user experience will be fine no matter what, since Apple generally takes good care of that.

But man I'm disappointed that they didn't do a new design for the iPad 3, at least from the looks of the leaks. I really don't like the current iPad design, and was hoping for something different.

I care! The new Austin factory will be put to work on that A6. Book it numble.

Anyway, according to MacRumors, the chip was manufactured all the way back in November; maybe it was made for a prototype, maybe it's made for the cheaper iPad.

Would it be smart to reserve the shit out of the iPad 3?

Can we even do that? I'm not familiar with Apple product launches.
