Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

Let's talk about the latter half of the thread title: quad core chip.

Are folks still expecting this? Or will we get a beefed up dual-core chip with a faster GPU?

I'm talking about the retina part. Engadget/Topolsky reported about the QXGA display before the iPad 2 launch and it obviously didn't happen.

The issue there is Topolsky is never right about anything. Whatever he says the oppposite is usually true when it comes to rumors.

You have got to be joking. 2048x1536 is higher res than most PC monitors, and you think that's tragic? It'll still be one of the highest density panels on the market, and will certainly be the highest denisty panel in this form factor for some time.

Isnt that resolution just a rumor though? I would be impressed with 1080p tbh. I want a 1080p oled to watch movies on :P.

While the iPad 3 display will be top of its class and is releasing very soon, Samsung demo'd a 10.1" 2560x1600 LCD last year so I don't know how long Apple will hold the crown. I imagine they will have that display in a tablet by the end of this year.

That Samsung display had a pentile grid.

I am having serious iPad relapse. Sold mine a week and a half ago and have been using a combo of my netbook (running Jolicloud) and my new Vita since, but I really need a new iPad. Let's get this show on the road.

I feel ya. We're so close now you can almost taste it.

I just want something new, shiny, and powerful in my hands. I'm tired of the iPad 1
crashing all the time:(

I am expecting the latter.

Higher resolution, and virtually no other major improvements.

Also, minor RAM bump to 1GB. This has to happen, by the laws of computer science. In order to store graphic assets at 2X size, you need 2X memory or face a performance stall.

Well based on leaked parts we already know it has 8 megapixel camera as well.

Right, I didn't think about that. That's nice but not crazy amazing.

A surprising number of people use their iPad as a full-blown camera, but I couldn't fathom it.

I'm looking forward to the language and theme of the invitation Apple sends out. It should be this week by Wedensday.

Last year's was the awfully awkward "come see what 2011 will be the year of" (ouch).

I hope they do something a bit more coy this year that gets the internet all riled up... if nothing else, it'll give this thread more to talk about than the display and quad cores.

I saw someone using their iPad as a camera while hiking in the Poconos. I can't imagine myself doing that...to unwieldy. My SLR cost as much as the 64 GB model though.

I still hope for a quad-core chip.

March of progress and all that, but I feel like we are rapidly approaching the point where iPad hardware is pulling far, far away from iPad software. Is this really something people feel the tablet needs? Don't get me wrong, I want to eventually get to this point, but given that tablets right now are primarily being pushed as content consumption devices...

Was very lucky to get an iPad 2 for Christmas so will almost certainly skip this one. Retina and a faster processor is nice but again quite incremental imo, similar to the recent iPhone 4 -> 4S upgrade.

Seems like bi-annual upgrades of each is the way to go. iPhone 5 this year for me, then the iPad 4 hopefully next year! (unless I lose my job or something I guess, d'oh)

Retina is far from incremental I'd say. Just compare iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4. iPad 2 > iPad 3 is more similiar to iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4 it looks like so far. The changes are pretty much exactly the same as that upgrade. Retina display, better processor, & better cameras.

It looks like iPad's 2 year life cycle is the odd numbered iPad's are the big leaps forward, the even numbered ones are "S" style upgrades.

"Come see the Quad-Core iPad 3 with a Retina display also 1 Gig of RAM".

Well based on leaked parts we already know it has 8 megapixel camera as well.

Technically, the only thing certain is a slightly larger camera module, which could really mean anything. I would personally not bet on 8 MP, considering this would equal the iPhone 4S camera, and the iPhone line always seems to have had the best camera technology for purely commercial purposes.

Also, if we assume a "1080p video recording!" label sells better to the mainstream than megapixel numbers, the technical requirements to be met would just barely exceed 2 MP. In my eyes, the iPad 2 camera was always more about video capabilities than photo resolution, though that's not to say Apple wouldn't ever break in a new direction, of course.

Quad core is a non-issue to me. As always, Apple wants performance without killing battery life, so that's what I expect. Quad will come when there is a good software reason backed up by the appropriate power profile.

What I think is more interesting is what we can expect from the platform after this revision. The panel won't be getting an upgrade again for awhile, so what's left?

I saw someone using their iPad as a camera while hiking in the Poconos. I can't imagine myself doing that...to unwieldy. My SLR cost as much as the 64 GB model though.

It's definitely odd how you hold the iPad to take photos in that sort of situation, but the results are surprisingly good (scenery shot, presumably a bright enough day, no big fuss over small details. Inside shots obviously a lot worse). I wouldn't use it over an SLR but that being said I'm not the sort of person who travels with an SLR either. It's just a fun convenience thing - there's something to be said for just casually taking a photo and flipping back to your map/book/whatever without breaking the flow of the day.

Retina certainly isn't incremental to me.

But yeah, if you already have an iPad 2, then yeah, I'd wait still.

Ipad 3 appears to be a pretty significant jump. I don't know how a person can still use a 2 once they see the 3's screen, if the jump from 3gs to 4 for iphones is any indication.

Why wait? By next year the iPad 2 will have devalued enough that the cost of going from an iPad 2 to an iPad 4 will be about the same as going from 2 to 3 to 4, and you won't have had a year of using the 3.

That Samsung display had a pentile grid.

The retina debate is amusing. It reads more or less like creationists vs textbooks at times.

(Reads about pentile...)

ugh.
Samsung has shown off two displays—the first was pentile and the second was RGB.

Adobe just released a Photoshop app for iOS that, amongst other restrictions, is limited to a max of 1600x1600 images and can't actually open PSD files with layers. I can easily see why some folks want more power in their tablets

I truly hopes Apple doesn't dilute its branding and call this a Retina Display when it clearly isn't. Or, at the least, add an asterisk or footnote in their marketing materials that specifies it is only a Retina-class Display when held from X minimum distance from the viewer's eyes.

I know a couple of people who won't upgrade their device until it has an actual Retina Display, and the purported resolution floating around just doesn't cut it. Anything less than the pixel density of the iPhone 4 screen would be tragic.
You deserve to be disappointed and I will enjoy it when you are.

Yeah, this is a great year to jump for everyone. If you have an iPad 2 and a whole lot more if you have an iPad 1, of course.

People are spouting retina like it's nobody's business and already taking that kind of resolution for granted but you just won't believe your fucking eyes.

This is why I decided to wait and sell mine later. Using my iPad 2 for another month is worth $100 to me.

Captain's Log, Stardate 48535...Day 3 Without the iPad

Another awful morning...

As I sit on the John for my morning "Two with the news", I forage online for entertainment. The Zite iPhone app is fairly good, but all the content is just jammed on my screen, begging for the sweet release of a properly sized display. Flicking through GAF in the phone just doesn't feel right. I browse the app store and quickly close it...growing ever more angry at these cutesy freemium games infesting my beloved like a plague.

On the train ride to work I sit there and try to listen to some podcasts. No reading for me this day...my ears grow excited at the prospect of being filled with tech gossip...but my imagination weeps at the lack of creative stroking it's grown accustomed to. It will indeed need to suffer equally...waiting for the coming of the prophesized heir to the throne. This will be a harsh couple of weeks and I was not prepared...

At work, IT needs to work on my Macbook's windows partition again. It is apparently very hard to ensure that everything is fully functioning prior to giving it back. Had my beloved been with me, I'd be editing that PowerPoint out of my Dropbox account...alas I sit here periodically checking my email...fantasizing about the coming of the savior. It will free me from these shackles of boredom and dysfunction and I will once again be whole.

I will try and remain vigilant.

I don't want to sell my 64GB Wifi 2 until I have to. Don't know how much I should ask though. My smart cover unfortunately left a ugly scratch on the side and at some point I also got a slightly noticeable scratch on the glass. I liked the feel of the raw smooth glass and didn't want to cover it like my phone. I'll have to pay for that now.

I don't want to sell my 64GB Wifi 2 until I have to.

It's almost certain that when iPad3 launches, Apple will heavily discount iPad2 to shift remaining stock so I'd sell that now if you don't want to lose a ton of cash.

Wow. I just can't...wow. I REALLY hope this post was meant as a joke/tongue in cheek. If not, your friends are somewhat insane, and in no way represent any potential iPad customer, so their views and wishes are irrelevant. From a technical perspective, it would be utterly idiotic for Apple to add a few pixels in each dimension and completely fuck up the 2x2 dimensions and make it hell for developers, so they can match some arbitrary 'retina' definition'. Tell your friends to have fun waiting 10 years or so, cause the resolution won't be changing again any time soon.

Typically the iPad leads the iPhone in terms of CPU. iPad gets the A4, iPhone 4 gets the A5. iPad 2 gets the A5, iPhone 4S gets the A5.

Would be odd to shift the focus from making the iPad the marquee device for hardware to the iPhone...just would buck the trend I guess is all. Granted, it's a trend with 2 points...so who knows.

Rumour. iPad 3 more expensive then iPad 2.

The iPad 2 prices are in U.S. dollars at the present pricing, which starts at $499 for the 16GB+WiFi model. The iPad 3, meanwhile, is listed at a starting price of $579 for the $16GB+WiFi model and goes as high as $899 for the 64GB+WiFi+3G model. According to the chart, the iPad 3 costs $80 more for the equivalent Wi-Fi models, and $70 more for the equivalent 3G models.
