Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

iPad 2S with A5X processor and no Retina for $499
iPad 3 with A6 processor and Retina for $579

Or rather:

- Early '12 iPad for $499
- Early '12 iPad Pro for $579

IT BEGINS!

Those increased prices pretty much guarantee that I'm not upgrading my 2 to the 3.

I will, however, upgrade from the 2 to the, uh, next one?

There is no Retina Display for any of these devices.

And I don't mind the price increase so much. Apple needs to increase their profit margins considering the competition and how little they're making off each device.

Wow

Oh, this is a bad, bad rumor.

599 for the 32 GB was already a tough sell, but 579 for 16 GB? Yikes.

Can we please talk about how Apple doesn't increase the prices with new models? Thanks.

Perhaps it was a blessing that I got my iPad returned to me after all. If the price is true, I will just wait until next year.

A noteworthy price increase wouldn't at all surprise me.

$580 would be idiotic. Apple can afford to cut it's margins so it can stay the dominant player in the tablet market. No, I won't believe Apple is this stupid. The new entry level iPad will stay @ $499.

You would still be able to get an iPad for 499, just not the new model. ~ my guess

I was gonna say, they've been holding to pricepoints pretty well lately.

Apple increased the off-contract price of the iPhone 4S compared to the original iPhone 4. Noone really complained because most folks buy the phones on contract :(. Which brings up another thought... how would you guys feel if Apple partners with the carriers to offer the iPads on contract? Some carriers already subsidize iPad purchases; I heard SoftBank in Japan offers a pretty decent payment plan albeit with a measly data package. AT&T is supposedly getting ready to offer a combined data package that covers phones and tablets. It'll be interesting if they have the iPad in mind.

I hope it goes radically in the other direction:

iPad Pro for $999 starting price! Thing has quad-core, retina graphics, 256gigs, 2 day battery life under heavy use, just a slim and trim... *skeet*

iPad Regular for $499 with less power, less visual sweetness, less memory, less battery.

...of course this is a bad idea and would hurt app sales...but it'd let me feel super and superior!

Yeah... no. I really doubt it's gonna see an increase in price.

On another note, has the 16GB WiFi always been $499 in the USA? It's €479 in Europe which is the first time I've seen electronics not getting a straight conversion.

Why would it be in Chinese though?

The Chinese don't get Apple products first and there is ZERO reason why it would be of use for international shipping from China to the US.

I think this is dud

No chance the 16 wifi is more than $500.

I am expecting the latter.

Higher resolution, and virtually no other major improvements.

Also, minor RAM bump to 1GB. This has to happen, by the laws of computer science. In order to store graphic assets at 2X size, you need 2X memory or face a performance stall.
Except 2x the resolution doesn't mean 2x the RAM footprint.

Though I do expect it will be 1GB RAM

I'll gladly pay the extra $80 if the rumor is true, but I don't think it is.

Still... usually when a rumor is completely made up it's some technophile's wet dream. The disappointing ones tend to have at least some nugget of truth to them.

overall, my only concern with the new iPad is battery life. I hope they don't blow it like they did with the 4S.

will you people stfu about retina already

Retina = the human eye doesn't see the actual pixels.

You almost assurdely will not see the pixels on iPad 3 so it's retina. 'Fridge over here is just being a troll.

If the upgrade is significant other than a higher resolution display I'll probably bite at a higher price. If I could get the 32gb version too I would be there day -1.

Mr. Refrigerator is starting to be annoying.

You may find my view annoying, but it points to the beginning of a decline for Apple since Jobs' death. When he unveiled the iPad 2 and talked about the Retina Display - the specificity in its DPI, the fact that the screen was raised to the glass surface - the passion he spoke with identified its importance to him. Apple likely spent massive R&D dollars to advance the technology and under Jobs' watch they pulled it off.

With this iteration it appears to me that they are just becoming lazy. Were Jobs alive there is no way this wouldn't be a Retina Display with superior resolution, clarity and performance. Now they're throwing the term around lazily where it doesn't apply, and Cook is fine to languidly abuse Jobs' past innovations. This is nothing more but just another screen that will be indistinguishable from the litany of other tablets on the market.

...you haven't even seen this thing yet

The only thing that's clear is you don't understand what 'Retina Display' means.

Raising the price on the entry iPad 3 is a bad idea. IMO

They may feel empowered to do so since meaningful competition is nonexistent. But they have a habit of simply replacing price points (or reducing) on other products in the past (iPods iPhones)

I say entry iPad 3 stays 499, while iPad 2 (16gb wifi only) goes to 399.

Possible to do iPad 2 at 449 and iPad 3 at 549 but that would suck wouldn't be so bad if entry iPad 3 is 32gb (it won't be)

This could very well lead to bankruptcy for Apple. A disturbing trend.

I'm starting to wonder if they bring out a quad processor version with that screen why I'd need my macbook pro at all.

I think you should cool it.

Stop with that. No one here is interested in that talk. It's a super high resolution for a device that small. Retina or not. It's just semantics.
Is there an actual technical definition to the term "retina display". I'm an outside observer, but I had thought that that term was just apple talk for the high pixel density display on the iphone 4s.

You almost assuredly will be able to see the pixels on the iPad 3 if you hold it close enough.

Retina display is a marketing term by apple and means whatever they say it does.

It is apple talk, but does have an actual technical definition (essentially a minimum spec).

Thanks. I have been wondering about this since I first saw the thread title.

Yes, but it interesting that they have laid out their own standard. I agree though that the distinction is fairly arbitrary. The screen on the 2 is already fantastic IMO. Any increase in pixel density at this point will just be icing on the cake.

What the hell is this nonsene? Do you not realize how far in advance products are designed and planned of this scale? The iPad 3 was obviously very far along before Steve Jobs died in October. Hell, he had a fully outlined ten year plan he put in place for their product lines before he stepped down as CEO.

I mean look, we probably won't see the Apple Television set till late 2012 or 2013 yet Jobs was heavily invovled in that as well. This is crazy talk.

It's a marketing term now. Back then, it was a visual revelation and an emotional piece of technology that brought accolades to the iPhone 4.

I'll still be upgrading form my iPad 1 no matter what the price. :|

And lmfao at the whole 'apple is going down now that jobs is gone!!' angle. Pahleez.
