Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

It's a marketing term now. Back then, it was a visual revelation and an emotional piece of technology that brought accolades to the iPhone 4.

The iPad 3 will be a visual revelation when it is unvieled and get tons of accolades from the press.

I doubt you will find one single article from a big name news outlet who will spew "BUT BUT BUT BUT ITS NOT RETINA" sort of nonsense.

The idea that iOS devices will become lesser quality with Scott Forstall running the iOS division still is just absurd. He is a mini-Steve Jobs. He is very much Jobs equal in terms of dedication and obsessive quality control.

I never cease to be amazed at how much more quickly these devices are advancing then I want them to. What salient functional advances will the ipad 3 even bring? I have been waiting for the 3 to come out, but part of me thinks that I could buy a 2 now and I would be perfectly happy to own it for 5 years.

Is the screen going to be the central selling point?

I love how I spelled out all this Retina nonsense days and days ago and we're still talking about it now.

If someone wants to shout from the rooftops that the iPad 3 will have less DPI than the iPhone 4 than they can choose to do so.

If that same person than turns and tries to say that the iPad 3 cannot be called a Retina device because it falls under that DPI than they didn't listen to what the definition applied to the word actually was.

Unless the argument that people want to throw their name on is "you hold the iPad the same distance from your face as you do a phone" than there is no conversation to be had. It's Retina...and it's Retina by the definition Apple presented in the initial keynote.

Period. End of story.

You may find my view annoying, but it points to the beginning of a decline for Apple since Jobs' death. When he unveiled the iPad 2 and talked about the Retina Display - the specificity in its DPI, the fact that the screen was raised to the glass surface - the passion he spoke with identified its importance to him. Apple likely spent massive R&D dollars to advance the technology and under Jobs' watch they pulled it off.

With this iteration it appears to me that they are just becoming lazy. Were Jobs alive there is no way this wouldn't be a Retina Display with superior resolution, clarity and performance. Now they're throwing the term around lazily where it doesn't apply, and Cook is fine to languidly abuse Jobs' past innovations. This is nothing more but just another screen that will be indistinguishable from the litany of other tablets on the market.

IT'S NOT EVEN OUT YET!

if you're not trolling, you've got screws loose.

no, i think you're trolling...

What is expected from rumors for 3 over 2:
Improved CPU, improved GPU, double the RAM, Better cameras, far better screen resolution, Siri

no, i think you're trolling...

Apparently we already know iPad 3 will be shit because Steve Jobs died. Don't you understand? It doesn't matter that the whole thing was likely designed well before he died or stepped down as CEO. Or the fact that people like Forstall, Ive, Cook, and the rest are all there and were central to the the rise of Apple and their high quality products these last ten or so years.

That seems to be his weird logic.

No, he's definitely trolling.

I've posted exactly what the terminology is referring to, and he continues to not give a shit and keep on spreading FUD.

Maybe he'd prefer if I actually wrote out the math in long-form?

And your complete avoidance of my replies confirms you are a troll.

Good luck surviving here, junior.

I'm far from a troll. I've presented my views on this in several long paragraphs and stand by every word that I've typed. I'm not attacking anyone personally, nor am I being overly emotional in my responses.

I speak as someone who loves his Apple products, but realizes that the company will stumble with a non-visionary like Cook at helm. I've long used Apple products, but don't hold an emotional attachment to the company. I can appreciate what Jobs stood for, though, and my point on the Retina Display is that they've bastardized it and commoditized the term - his term - such that it's lost the magic and meaning that Jobs infused with it on the iPhone4 and 4S. It's a depressing artifact of stale Cooks' leadership.

I also don't see the price increase as impossible. Apple's long provided these tablets at an incredible value, and it stands to reason that they'll have to eventually raise prices as they improve upon hardware tech and expand their cloud storage infrastructure.

So basically everything no one really cares about?

What is expected from rumors for new android: Improved CPU, improved GPU, double the RAM, Better cameras, far better screen resolution,

"Lol bullet point tech specs."

I'm confused here, Jobs only just died at the end of last year. How is Cook's leadership "stale" already? How have they "bastardized" retina when they have yet to release, or even announce, a new device with retina since Jobs' passing?

Why do you keep ignoring the fact iPad 3 was very likely designed well before Jobs died? Do you think they start designing and deciding the specs of one of the biggest products just MONTHS before it comes out? They had likely started iPad 3 before iPad 2 was even out.

Not to mention Jobs left Apple with a very detailed 10 year product line plan to follow.

It's hilarious he is passing judgement. It makes no sense. He doesn't get how long it takes to design products like this. Basically everything Apple releases in 2012 was designed under Steve Jobs.

There's nothing but speculation that a 10 year plan exists. And I wouldn't put it above Cook or others in the company to scale back Jobs' influence in the company in his last year, as he was likely addled from the countless chemicals in his body to treat the cancer and pain management.

Oh ok, so you really are just a crazy person.

Jobs according to all accounts was heavily involved, to the very day he died he was making calls and checking product prototypes.

Despite your claim otherwise, you must either be a troll or insane. How is the rumored release of a new iPad with, as far as I know, the highest resolution for a device of its size a sign of Cooks "stale" leadership?

On top of that how can you claim Cook is a non-visionary, he's barely had the job, I think we should give him some time before we call him a visionary or a non-visionary. Right now he's almost certainly just going with what has already been planned.

Edit:

I don't buy an iPad for Apple's software, that's true. But it's other people's software that makes me buy it over anything else and I don't see how that's going to change in the next two years.

I agree with this statement for the most part, but I think it's funny how this mindset is pretty much the exact opposite of OSX users in the past.

Except I've explained exactly what 'retina display' refers to, and you continue to state that this isn't ... even though it is ... and worse, state that their (non) lies are evidence of a decline in quality.

That's the definition of trolling. Do I need to run through the math for you?

Refrigerator:

Lost magic? Bastardization and commoditization of "retina"? You are acting as if the iPad 3 is a thing (according to apple it doesn't exist)and it seems you're ignoring the distinct probability that it was designed far before Jobs' death.

Anyway, excited for more news/leaks in faster succession this week. Front page of macrumors already made my day.

iOS 5.1 Beta Reveals Evidence of Simultaneous Development on A5X and A6 Chips edit: so so late

edit: didn't mean to pile on, woops

This thread was missing the awkward creepiness of discussing Jobs's health and drug prescriptions.

I'm glad we have that now. it's totally pertinent to the discussion of screen resolution and not at all a morbid and inane thing to talk about.

that'll do, little refrigerator. that'll do

That much is true, but the OS limits the apps. There's no denying apps on ios are polished but they're not exactly trail blazing with innovated uses.

Instapaper does not count, dream.

This new display doesn't come close to approximating the ~300DPI of the iPhone 4/S screen. The distance to one's eyes is meaningless. We might as well call the iPad 2 display a Retina Display as well, since at a range of several feet we won't be able to discern individual pixels.

i hate zooming.. i want to see the whole page, not just a single pane since some scenes are multipane and can span laterally or diagonally or across both pages

I don't mean zooming. I just pinch it slightly so that the white edges of the comic page bump against the bezel if that makes sense. Comiczeal automatically knows what your trying to do and actually auto locks it that way once you do it so that you can have the full viewing experience.

But at iPad-holding distance you CAN discern some pixelation, especially with text. The whole argument is about image quality, which happens to be directly related to perception. I don't understand how you can think it's meaningless. You aren't plugging the specs into your brain, you're holding the device in your hands.

This is the 21st century. We already know what's going to happen in the future thanks to internet leaks!

Dude, chill.

What is all the more hilarious is the idea that Steve Jobs literally did every single thing himself.

The iOS hardware platform would not exist as it does today with Scott Forstall's leadership and the Apple hardware would not have such a high quality design without Jonathan Ive and his design team.

And guess what folks? They are all still there. Thank god it's only Mr. Freezer who seems to think Apple can't function without Jobs.

Also don't tell him Jobs likely signed off on the resolution in iPad 3 likely a year in advance when he was still an active CEO. It'd shatter his whole world view.

OK, I'll say one last thing about this, for the benefit of anyone else reading who may think you are serious.

The two resolutions are not similar and it is not a serious argument to say that you can hold the ipad 5 feet away from you. distance to the eye was ALWAYS a factor in the definition of the marketing term for "retina" display

the new display will look much, much better even at a foot away from your face.

as an example the new PS Vita has a resolution of around 220 ppi and text rendering looking wonderful on web pages and in some games. It is much better than the ipad 2 at similar reading distances. Even though the resolution of the Vita is much lower than the iphone 4 (326) and even the supposed resolution of the ipad 3 (266), it still looks considerably sharper and cleaner rendering text than the current ipad at similar viewing distances. I can notice the improvement from a foot away or two feet away. it's obvious.

It is a major improvement over the ipad 2 resolution. The ipad 3 will look even better (aside from black levels). images and especially text will be fantastic on the ipad 3 at 266 ppi. I have no doubt Apple will market it as "retina" display and it will rightfully be the big selling point of the thing. I can't imagine anyone being jaded at having that kind of pixel density in a 10" display.

How do you iPad3 hopefuls feel about the tablets shown so far at MWC? While I am not a big fan of the pad phone/tablet/netbook combination (simply because its stylus is just capacative) - it is a really a significant difference than the iPad model. That and the Note 10.1 w/ the wacom stylus, it seems like all my hoping for the iPad to introduce something ground breaking isn't necessary anymore... they opened up the market, which is amazing, but it looks like other companies are really attempting to compete in the hardware space in unique and creative ways.

I guess the iPad is still the primary tablet of purchase however, so there are a lot of accessories out there that give it functionality that is similar to what is being shown with some of these announced tablets.

I'm looking forward to the language and theme of the invitation Apple sends out. It should be this week by Wedensday.

Last year's was the awfully awkward "come see what 2011 will be the year of" (ouch).

I hope they do something a bit more coy this year that gets the internet all riled up... if nothing else, it'll give this thread more to talk about than the display and quad cores.

I'm really curious to see if and what they will showcase the potential retina display, in regards to new software. They always release a bunch of new stuff as a reason for the new hardware to exist. Reading? Textbooks? New games?

You are a troll - plain and simple

DPI IS NOT THE MEASURE

It's like I'm talking to a fucking wall

I wish you'd just clearly spell out your point of view! WHY WON'T YOU JUST CLEARLY SAY WHAT YOU MEAN?!

I don't think Apple would split the iPad line into two products...then again they did it with Macbooks. Would definitely get the 64GB Wifi Quad core one though.

It's a marketing term now. Back then, it was a visual revelation and an emotional piece of technology that brought accolades to the iPhone 4.

lol

I was very emotional as well when the Toshiba Portage g900 came out in 2007 with a 313ppi retina display.

Or the Sharp 930SH with a 327ppi screen in 2008.

I like some of Apples tech. But they aren't tech gods like some people make them out to be. Almost all things Apple gets credit for was done by someone else before them. They just managed to put all the things together in a package that people wanted.
It's like that BS story of how Steve Jobs invented the mouse.

Lots of cool tech. Believe me, I wish every iPad had a wacom digitizer! :)

What holds it all back, though, is that it's just that - hardware. Apple's execution works because they keep the platform dead-simple in terms of upgrades (Apple sells a regular update, but a singular one, giving it console-esque reliability) allowing the developer marketplace time to catch up and invent as they go. I don't have the time or money to develop for every type of Android set, and every resolution and every special feature, so what do I do? I aim for the minimum spec and maximum audience.

Google does a good job of introducing new OS versions and fighting the fight from their end, but without any sort of control over the hardware that comes out, it's always going to be a tough slog figuring out what tablets/handsets you want to support.

Viewing distance and size is everything. In photography, the concept of what is acceptably sharp is actually based on viewing size and distance, something people often aren't really aware of.

In regards to ipad2 being 'retina', you're kind of right in a way, but Steve Jobs already defined the term 'retina' as being based on a viewing distance that one would normally view a particular device from. No one typically views the ipad2 at 5 feet. At the normaly viewing distance, an ipad2 has slightly discernible pixels, depending on what you are displaying (text appears obviously anti-aliased, for example).

We might as well, because viewing distance has absolutely no effect on pixel size, right? Do you think Apple simed SPECIFICALLY for 326ppi or whatever for the iPhone 4, or was it simply the RESULT of the quadrupling of resolution, which is what they're expected to do again?

You're such a fucking troll.
