Bloomberg: iPad 3 in March with retina display, quad core chip

So, iPad 4 is where its at?
Guess that matters what you're looking for.

iPad 2 is hardly CPU or GPU bottlenecked for the most part. Really the two biggest performance complaints for the HW are RAM (most notably for browsing) and resolution. The expectation is both of those will be taken care. So as long as you aren't looking for some serious performance increases (and the SW that would eventually take advantage of it) ... I think you're good to go.

What I expect you'll get with the processor die shrink is similar battery life, with some small improvements in its already good performance. Coupled with the improved RAM and resolution, that seems like a really good improvement to me. If you have the means, I'd say go for it.

Really the only way I'd say no is if you are a hardcore user that wants major improvements on true multi-tasking via jailbreaking. In that case, I'd wait for a quad core assuming this isn't (which signs point to). Once a quadcore is available and someone writes a tight scheduler ... the thing will FLY.

I'm really hoping for a keyboard dock peripheral a-la Asus Transformer, mainly for the extra battery life.

Also mouse support would be awesome.

Also also, any good writing apps?

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank you!

Going abroad next year and since I don't have a laptop I think I'll only take my pad with me, since all my work entails is pretty much writing stuff.

You're going to be very dissapointed.

I don't even need it to be first party, lol... I just wish someone would consider it. I mean, I already have the keyboard thing solved, of course, but extra battery life would be oh so cool, right? :D

If I really needed a keyboard I'd buy a MacBook Air. Seeing people on flights and stuff with iPad + keyboard always boggles the mind. If you're gonna haul that around with you it might as well be a notebook/ultrabook, right?

also, Linen = background yet for some reason Notification Center Linen overlaps the screen?

Yeah. It would make more sense if the entire screen and its contents shifted down to reveal the notification center, kind of like how it shifts to the left in ML. The way it is now is just ugly and inconsistent with the linen. Hopefully they tweak this in iOS6.

Nah, in this resolution-independent Apple dreamt world of iOS, keeping the screen at 3,5" isn't about enlarging the pixel density but about not creating a new interface size, that would require a total rework of all apps, assets, SDK, etc.

I'm not on the boat that says that there will never be an iPhone with a screen larger than 3,5", but if there ever will, it will be a HUGE decision by Apple. Never an afterthought.

Without Jobs to guard against an increase of screen size, I fully expect that Cook will soon follow suit with a 3.75" or 4" screen while keeping the same resolution of the current displays in the iPhone4S. Apple clearly doesn't care about PPI anymore, and the magical number that defined the Retina Display means nothing now.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they stretch the screen out to 4.5" to compete with Samsung at this point. I'm disappointed by them.

The thing about the dock+keyboard is that it becomes both. Everyday use is up to the regular iPad, but if you happen to need extra battery and/or better working capcity it's pretty handy to have a keyboard charger dock.
You're missing the point where it's an optional feature.

Also, speaking for most cases I know, lots of people who have iPads or iPhones hate OSX, it's a completely different beast from iOS, so transition to an air makes no sense for most ipad users (since most of them are windows users).

As for me, that's the route that I want pads to go down, I want them to eventually become tablet netbook devices, fully functioning computers.

Apple needs to make iPad Notification Center like Mountain Lion Notification Center; the way it is now is just pathetic.

Care to elaborate a bit about the differences?
I also hate iOS Notification Center, and I'm not sure how Mountain Lion's one will be much better.

The first comment isn't even worth mentioning, and the second comment is just lol worthy.

I'll be picking up an iPad 3 and a Macbook Pro with a Retina screen when they come out. Can't believe anyone got suckered into getting an iPad 2 for Christmas.

We bought an iPad for my parents for Christmas. I was well aware that iPad 3 would be coming in the first quarter of 2012.

We weren't suckered. it's our parents FIRST computer. They are totally computer illiterate. The concept of a login, or clicking, double-clicking, windows, heck, even a mouse is completely foreign.

With the iPad they are now emailing, messaging, browsing, facetiming. It's a life changer. We knew they most likely wouldn't appreciate the differences to an iPad 3. And what were we supposed to do? Wrap up an iOU for an iPad?

The way some of you think blows my mind.

Yeah. It's quite clear that Apple doesn't care about the Macs that much anymore. See how much the iDevices are selling compared to the Macs.

Question is: where will all professional users go when in the future? I can't see many of them going to Windows. Linux?

i doubt they're going to discontinue mac anywhere in the near future given they just dedicated themselves to yearly OS revisions.

i'm just referring to the way it slides under the screen from the side in ML. the way a tiny iPhone sized piece of Linen just flops over the iPad's big screen is just ugh.

It was hilarious the first time I slid down the notification centre on the iPad.

That's it?

On that note, I also don't like how the input password pop up is iPhone sized as well.

It's the same thing for my Mom she tried to learn how to use a Windows PC years back and it was hard enough to tech her the concept of just clicking the mouse, getting her to open a folder on the desktop was tougher.

Then she started playing Fruit Ninja on my iPad2.

Well, not tomorrow. But what about in 5 years? The market will be very different. It's not really a question of discontinuation. More a question of what the Mac will be in 5 years. Locked down like iOS? I don't think we're reaching too far in saying that. And look at the Pro. It's way over due an update.

I don’t think it’ll be locked down like iOS.

the question you should ask yourself is: “Do you think people who work at Apple would be happy doing their work on Windows?”

As long as that answer is “no”, which I suspect it will be for our lifetimes, The Mac as a more open platform than iOS isn’t going to drop off the face of the earth.

The Mac Pro might, but not the Mac itself

Yeah, the ML announcement got me more excited about the Mac than ever.
Apple redefined what it means to use a computer and they're bringing the Mac along for the ride.

You're really committed to this, huh?

The people who work at Apple have a different access to iOS and Mac OS X (not to mention backend systems and IT support) than the rest of us peons. It'll never be locked down for them even if it is for us. I recall a video of Jobs describing his office setup that sounded a lot like the iCloud we got last year—except that video was from the 90s.
There is probably some band of Apple designers playing around with a wacom & touch enabled iMac right now !_!

Pretty sure that was a video of him selling Next. And that stuff wasn’t hidden away from the public - it’s what he was pushing to the public.

Mac OS will never be as locked down as iOS. They may have stricter requirements for MAS apps, but they will always allow non-dev signed apps to be installed - even if it requires flipping a bit in settings.

I couldn't get to sleep last night because a tapered iPad would mean it lends itself to be held in a particular way, which negates the original 'orientation doesn't matter' thing. This thought preyed on my mind and gave me nightmares.

This can only mean one thing: The iPad 4 has a 16:9 display.

I have been thinking about the iPod rumor even since (or before) the 2nd one came out.

It has the most inaccurate rumors compare to everything else.

First we have the "iPad 2.5 come out in Nov 11; real iPad next year" rumor. The thing about that rumor was that it came out more than 1 time. And they we had the "smaller" iPad rumor but those came out from less reputable sources.

And then we had more than one "Apple will make a iPad 2+ with only resolution increase" rumor.

There is no way all these rumors were fake. Some of them had to be manufactured by Apple. Interesting Apple didn't do it with other products. I think Apple was and is making more money with the iPad; and it felt more threaten by the competitor. There's why so many rumor decoy came out.

that first rumor about an ipad in November wasn't a rumor... it was conjecture from John Gruber who thought Apple needed something big in the fall and ipods don't cut it anymore. He always said that it was only something he was thinking and not based on any inside tips. Yet the irresponsible tech media glommed onto it and we ended up with months of rumors about a fall ipad 2+ or whatever.

Apple had the iphone 4S in the fall. that was their big fall reveal.

For the time being, Apple seems to be OK with a spring release for the ipad. maybe one year that will change, as it did with the iphone.

my guess is that after a few more years, ipad updates won't be worthy of events and will be handled like macbook updates. the ipad is, after all, just another computer :)

I really hope that the IPad 3 is fast enough so coming here (I surf on neogaf with my IPad 2) and entering threads with lots of gifts doesn't look like its on slow motion :(

Then again, for Apple iOS devices are computers perfected. Controlled experience, App Store, a lot more profitable.

So if anything, I guess the yearly cycle is Apple's new path. Don't see why they should be aiming for the strategy they have for their less profitable lines of products.

that's a good point. I hadn't thought of that. They would love to be be able to control the message with an event for as long as possible.

I was just thinking about how it would be harder and harder to justify an event once the ipad has reached, say, it's seventh or eighth revision. But if anyone would do it - it's Apple.

Will there ever be a time when I wont need to use itunes to dump all my videos onto a larger external storage?

Just syncing to a NAS or time capsule would be amazing.

Well, they no longer do events for new Mac revisions but that is only a very recent change. They did the big Apple annoucements for new Mac revisions for about 10 years straight after Jobs returned. If they kept the Mac ones going that long (now the revisions are soft launches without much PR) I don't see why iPad can't have at least 10 years of big revision press conferences. Especially when iPad is far more popular than the Mac ever was.

They pretty much stopped the giant Mac press conferences once the iPad hit. Which fits in with how I feel Apple sees the iPad. That the iPad is the successor to the Mac. Yes, they are keeping the Mac around in the background but they also kept the Apple II around for a long time and the Mac was the successor to that.

Hmm, if the new Macbook Pro redesign is happening this year, I could see them having an event for that. Depending on just how much they changed it.

Lots of big revisions could be coming this year, really.

They limit their events to keep them exciting so I suspect since Ivy Bridge is delayed till June they will mention them at WWDC but the focus of that event almost entirely on iOS 6. The new macs will just be a bonus side part part of it.

I suspect that if the Macs get an actual redesign and not just a spec bump, they'll find a way to sneak them into a conference somewhere so they can show one of their "we cut these bitches from a solid slab of a-lue-min-ium and are beautiful as hell" videos.
