The song music is good, however, its way to DBZ anime style for this game with the lyrics, sounds like karaoke with too much to drink.

I can't believe that butt rock song actually grew on me. I absolutely HATED it when I first heard it last year and have continued to violently dislike it up until I started playing through the actual game last week. Now I'm fucking humming the song in the shower, making up random lyrics to go along with the music. It's the ultimate dumb song that I can't get out of my head.

]I suppose I could. That escort mission was a blast.

I just loaded my last save, before the escort mission, and the music is back. I guess I could go through the escort again, because I bet the music when that whole...thing...happens I bet the music is kicking.

But FUCK those tigers are SO hard.

Everyplace else I can just visit again and hear the music then.

Anyone got any tips for those fucking tigers? Oy. Valley of the one hit kills.

I can't really recall how good the music was during the escort scene is 'cause I was a little busy worrying about shit jumping out and attacking the caravan. I couldn't handle not having any music though....that would annoy the hell out of me. You were at least able to hear the Mural Town theme right? I love that piece. Very reminiscent of Beyond Good & Evil's credit music.

The tigers at that point are going to one hit kill you whenever they use their bite attack. I'm not sure if there's any way to avoid it. Just make sure your white magic user (Jiro) is healing and reviving people.

So I'm finally sitting down with this game for an exteneded period of time. How did you decide to arrange your party? I'm thinking of making Shu tank, and keeping Jiro white magic, and Kluke black magic.

Just leave them as they are and add an extra class or two (Generalist's Skill+2 and Accessory+1 are quite useful) when you get well into the game.

ya I just realized I had it reversed. Ya apparently I'm racist for calling people white/black hat hackers as well at a dinner party I was at not too long ago to lol.

I missed the Mural Town music, but I'll be going back for the Gel Chests or whatever anyway so I'll hear it some day. I think I'm just going to say fuck it and continue on from Jibral. It's not really worth slugging through everything, especially since I've got the soundtrack.

I don't really have a tank, although I'll level Guardian for Shu soon.

I have all five party members now, though, so physical damage is pretty much divided between Shu (Sword Master), Maru (Monk/Barrier Magic) and Zola (Assassin). Then in the back row I have Kluke (Black Magic) and Jiro (White Magic). Actually, Kluke heals better than Jiro right now because she has so much +Magic Damage, but I rarely need her to heal.

I had to during the optional Poo bosses in the Ancient Cavern, though. They were pretty fuckin' tough.

That's the way I did it. Generalist is definately the first class you'll want to unlock when you get a chance. Unlocking the Skill+ is one of those things you just have to do.

You might wanna make two party members (in my case Kluke and Zola) learn black magic as they can be extremely useful in battles with big groups of enemies.

I'm just glad they have so much extra stuff at the end to do. Plus with the achievements you have quite a bit to do.

I take it that after you finish the main quest and storyline, you can continue to do optional bosses, etc?

Yeah I was wondering about that, I know I missed 3 achievements so far for the qte/wagon/shooter part, but can one keep playing when the game is over to get the grinding ones done?

Did I miss these shitheads (*wiiiiink*)? I just arrived at Jibs.

You need the Blue Device to take down blue barriers. If you were exploring when you got out of the Ancient Caverns before going into Talta Village you may have found the entrance.

As soon as I got it I went back to all of the ones in old locations and took them down to get it over with. Got some nice accessories too.

Anyway, you're fairly close to getting the Blue Device, I think.

Not sure about that but there's definitely plenty of replay value. After you beat the main quest you can do game+ if you download the hard content. You can play the game on hard or impossible with your same characters. No idea what the difficulty is like on impossible. I tried to do it my first go round, but the sand shark was doing 300+ damage to my character. That made it slightly difficult to get two hits on it before dying.

That is cool to know. I am really enjoying this game and I hope more of GAF picks this up because I would love to see a sequel. Sure this is traditional, but you have the best "traditional" talent behind this game and it definitely shows.

Sort of. You can do the optional quests at any point before the final battle, but after that, there's no going back. So hold onto that saved file... If you do ALL the optional stuff before the last boss, you'll be so powerful that the boss will be a total joke.

Not an asshole.
Ok so the way so many of you speak so positively of the music, graphics, and old school gameplay have made me reconsider. I initially just felt hugely disappointed when I saw the review scores and since I had other games I wanted to buy, I just let it drop off the map completely.

But, I just read the 1up review. It was extremely negative, and pretty much said the story characters designs and pacing were complete shit. Now, I don't think the character designs are bad, and thought all his dragon ball Z references were bullshit anyways. I also like what I have seen of the story in Blims videos.

The only thing that is really holding me back is that he says you don't know why you are going anywhere for the first twenty hours and that nothing interesting happens until the final battle.

So help me out here gaf. I want to want this game and I almost do :D

I was wary about picking this up due to the reviews. So far, after completing the first disc, i wouldn't worry about the reviews.

Great music, solid battle system, interesting customisation/skills system. I'm loving it so far.

However, it is very easy. The only creatures giving me problems were the Tigers that have been previously mentioned (200+ hp one hit kills :/), but that only meant i had to leave one of my characters down till the fight ended.

The pacing for the story is bad at first, but picks up well until the end of the first disc. It's not massively deep so far, but quite light-hearted.

A solid purchase.

Now here's a different question for individuals that ownt he game: do you feel that GI's, Famitsu's, and Gamepro's reviews (or more specifically, review scores) are justified? (all three have claimed the game to be exceptional).

Just to reiterate, this game is criminally insanely easy, though I'm still at disk one, and it IS affecting my enjoyment of the game. It's really a crime that hardmode was ready to go and not put on the retail disk. If you start from the beginning play it on hard. If you find it too tough grind a bit and catch up to the AI.

my experience hasn't been anything like that. i spent 23 hours on the disc, and every time i needed to go to a new place it was pretty much explained why we were going there. maybe there's a few twists in the story that i don't know about yet, but you find out about a bad guy pretty early on and he's pretty much your target on the whole first disc, excluding one part where you're after someone else.

Speaking of easy....

There's a section relatively early on in the second disc where you'll be able to fight some pretty weak monsters but for some reason or another they give you more xp and sp than any regular encounters you've had up 'til that point. Then, to top it off, in that very same area there's a room that's right next to a save point with about 50 of 'em milling about. You can go in there, kill 'em all, get a butt load of experience, leave and repeat. I really don't know why they'd do that. The game was easy enough but then they put that in there....it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Still liking the game though.

If you're speaking of that Underground River area, they did it because they wanted you to kill them all for a specific reason. Did you do it? Did you kill them ALL?

Of course, if you leave a few alive it can be a pretty ridiculous grinding spot.

Rare monster?

And I haven't been able to kill many because they flee. I'm trying to get ten monster achievement but they get away too fast.

If you view the game for what it is, then the scores were justified. I think the only reason why other reviewers scored it lower was because of their expectations of what Sakaguchi's next project was going to be and the fact that this game by no means moves the genre forward like a FF or DQ game would. The scores given by GI was what the game should have gotten if you think of the game as an old school rpg. The other scores- that's what I would give if I was comparing BD to the other games that have moved the genre forward.

Yeah, I tried to get that achievement there for hours. But I don't think it's possible to do it there. Field Barrier is the best way to wipe 'em out anyway.

Questions:

-What do medals do?

-Will I eventually be able to open the chests blocked by the blue/green force fields?

-Do the individual classes max out at the points described in the manual (somewhere between 32-50 depending on the class)? Or do they all go to 99?

most of the jobs learn their last skills in the 30's range, but the job can be leveled up to level 99. the higher the job level, the higher the dragons stats when he has it equiped

also download the hard mode and the even harder mode from the hong kong market place, it works just fine

Can we get the hard mode thru the japanese marketplace or does it have to be in the asia marketplace?

Job classes all go up to level 99. They don't learn any skills after the ones in the manual, which is kind of lame. I was hoping for lots of secret skills.

are you talking about those little green men with the spears?

are you saying I get something special for killing all of them? Will it still work if I kill them with the field barrier skill?

also, im at that part right now and the snakes with wings have a really good bracer that you can steal that smokes anything that I was able to buy or find

Wait 'till you're able to go to the moving mecha base at the end of disc 2, that's where I did it.

Yeah, those are the ones—The Kelolon, I believe. If you kill them all
a hidden boss will appear—try to steal from it too!
That bracelet from the winged snake things is the BOMB—I got one too and used it for like 20 hours!

Wow, the castle feels so sparse. It's strange to see such enormous spaces be so empty. Makes the game feel unfinished.

And yeah, I really wish hard mode had been included. I should have downloaded that asian patch, I guess...

23 hours in, and quite a ways into disc 2. I must say, the story is becoming a lot more confortable, a bit more interesting, and quite cinematic. There is one or two scenes in particular that made me go "whoa." Good stuff.

That grinding spot that you're speaking of is THE grinding spot. In about 3 hours, I went up 20 levels (lvl 20 --> 40). So if you wanted a good gring spot, it's pretty ridiculous just how good it is.

Speaking of which, for someone who has beaten the game, what level is recommended for the final area/battle/whatever? Thanks

Yeah, except for the kitchen. Somehow it seems all the budget for the castle went into the kitchen.
