Boehner: Nation on the path to default if Obama doesn't give concessions for ACA

I find the entire situation in Washington sad.

At it's most basic level, a group of lawmakers is holding the budget hostage because it disagrees with a law passed via a constitutional process and upheld by the Supreme Court. This group cannot repeal the law because it does not have enough votes among lawmakers elected by the very people they serve.

It's political blackmail and it's disgusting.

Edit: It's important to me to keep my analysis non-partisan. I would be disgusted if any group of lawmakers behaved this way.

Boehner's whole career as speaker seems to be making government ineffectual just so the other side can't win. He's literally a political griefer ruining everything for everyone.

I don't know why there hasn't been any motion to get him removed, Democrats hate him, moderate Republicans hate him and the Tea party hates him. He is ineffectual for everyone involved.

There was movement to get him removed; he barely retained the Speakership after 2012. Unfortunately the movement to get him removed was from the political right, who voted for Allen West in lieu of Boehner, which wouldn't do anything to solve this particular issue besides give the rebel faction a scalp to parade around.

It may be worth pointing out that the Democrats had an opportunity to do something similar in the Bush years about something they also felt powerfully about and didn't
Couldn't boehner be detained or something according to the patriot act?
He can only be arrested if there's a breach of peace, a felony committed, or he's guilty of treason. See Section 6. I believe Boehner is in hot water if House members unilaterally use the power of the purse to indirectly delay (via shutdown) or directly stop (via default) mandatory spending (Obamacare) and undermine the authority of the Senate, Supreme Court, and the President in the process. The power of the purse isn't intended to cause economic damage, undermine the full faith and credit of the US, or give House members absolute authority.

Part of the reason Republicans aren't worried about setting a precedent is that they know Democrats won't do the things they do.

It does kind of suck that Democrats are actually sane and rational and don't want to bring down the entire government over petty things.

If I was Obama, I would create a public spectacle for the Republicans to display their bullshit to the entire nation.

Set up a "conversation" broadcasted live on all TV stations. Set up live voting by the American people to see who's bullshit they believe more. Let the GOP spill their usual bullshit on Obamacare, SS, etc... and let Obama make his points.

Conversation was had, the GOP has their little talking point dismantled, and are made to look like fools in front of the nation.

The ball is in Obama's court to step up and make them look bad.

Goddamn, that would be beautiful! Like the last 2 debates. Too bad it will never happen...

Boehner's "I won't let the country default" is absolutely smoke looking for an asshole to enter.

He'll just keep doing what he's doing, until the country defaults. At which point, someone will ask "I thought you said you wouldnt' let the country do this"

and he'll answer "I didn't let this happen. You guys saw how hard I tried to stop this from happening. But SOMEONE wouldn't negotiate with me..."

Yep.

yeah, its all theater for the sunday show. even if he was prepared to do it I doubt the majority of his caucus would.

That's what was said about the fiscal cliff and the shutdown, and look where we are.

I don't the expect the US to default but I also don't expect the House to vote on raising the debt ceiling.

The GOP are like the crew of the Titanic that locked all the 3rd class passengers in the steerage o assure that only the 1st class wealthy got the life boats....

...

After deliberately ramming the iceberg because they didn't like the captain.

If only Romeny would have won, then we wouldn't have to put up with GOP temper tantrums. That is the unspoken message of the GOP, government never works (when the Democrats are in charge) because the GOP won't let it work. If only you would just keep voting for the GOP then we would get a working government again.

Fuck boner. He's the worst speaker of the house. Letting his members say Obamacare is worse than Jim crow laws, slavery, and 2/3 law.

Fucking threatening our entire country.

And that's fine if they go more right, someone in it because they want to be and not just protecting their ass from all sides I think could be more effectual. I think part of the problem is this half-assed notion of solidarity within the GOP. They clearly don't agree among themselves yet keep up this stupid facade. If they decide the Tea Party is less reasonable and less desirable to work and some power struggles get going then I think we might see even less voting on strict party lines. I think that's what's happening now, just some more straws need adding.

It's kinda sad that people will still blame Obama over this...if only he didn't pass his own laws! Damn! He should only pass our laws, like rom...oh wait.

Costa throwing us a bone. Maybe there is hope.

Maybe.

Seems like non-tea party GOP members need to stop worrying about what a sect of their party is saying and realize their prospects aren't looking so good anyway. Do the right thing.

There is the 20 something percent that will always blame Obama, even if he signed into law a repeal of Obamacare.

The people who say Obamacare is worse than Jim Crow, slavery, and 3/5ths law? They need to be kicked off first. They have no semblance if fact-checking, and are not fit to govern.

Just lightly brushing aside atrocities that affect people to this very day, and comparing them to laws that just put more people on healthcare? Ridiculous. I know why they're doing it too. Just to anger Obama more, and Obama cannot be angry on national television. White people have been scared of the "angry black man" since time immemorial, and Obama being angry now would ruin anything he tries to do now, or in the future...

If I was Obama, I wouldn't even get angry. I'd just get sad. Seeing the country I promised to make better be sabotaged by domestic terrorism. It's a real shame.
And I'd let everyone know.

the mass impeachment attempts that will result if he does would be even more of a ridiculous media circus than we have now.

Obama: Unfortunately, since Congress is derelict in its duty to pass a budget in time, I have decided to take the drastic measure of invoking the 14th amendment in order to save this country and prevent a potential global economic depression.

The US public will side with Obama if he decides to go this route.

I don't care about the ACA, Obama better cave in, letting this country default now would be disastrous.

Maybe after this they can pass a bill mandating automatic budget appropriations to prevent this from the future.

Why should Obama cave?
It would be far far far simpler for Boehner to just do a simple "Yes/No" vote and get the government funded again.
This would happen, 100%. Obama doesn't have to do anything. This is completely on Boehner's shoulders.

He's already said he won't do and doesn't think he has the legal grounding to do so anyway.

Boehner is a useless spineless sack of shit, and I hope history remembers him as such.

The republicans, especially the tea party variety right now, are indeed hostage taking domestic terrorists, and, again, I hope history remembers them as such.

I know I will certainly be telling my children in the future precisely why I will never in my life vote republican. Perhaps others will, too.

Caving in would set not only a precedent that unhappy extremist members of the House can sabotage working government any time they choose, it would also set a precedent that laws passed can be held ransom.

Neither are options for the long term health of this country. Obama has nothing to cave on, it's the GOP who need to concede.

On top of that, Obama made concessions with the ACA to begin with. It passed, it is law, it was watered down to appease the terrible GOP to begin with. They approved it and now are changing their minds?

Fuck that shit.

Because he is the damn president. Avoiding a national crisis is his #1 job, after that he can play politics and push his agenda, he can play the blame game later.

No. This is on the GOP. It would be suicide for every Pres going forward to cave. Our executive branch would be forever stunted. And just because you dont care about the ACA doesnt mean the other millions should suffer for your utter lack of empathy.

If Boenher pushes a resolution to the shut down, he will probably lose his job as speaker. It's like some Game of Thrones shit, only less cool because this is actually fucking with real people's real lives.

There is no blame game. There is a terrorist organization holding the country hostage. The President should never, under any circumstance, concede to terrorist demands.
The people know and history will remember who's at fault. And it's not Obama. You should be asking why Boehner can't do his job.
