Because he is the damn president. Avoiding a national crisis is his #1 job, after that he can play politics and push his agenda, he can play the blame game later.
You're quite ignorant.

If he can't see that there are bigger things at stake here, he deserves to.
I feel like the t-word is justified here but can Obama use the worlds terrorism or terrorist in any context and not have it backfire? Fuck it I'd do it anyways.
American Taliban perhaps?
I don't care about the ACA, Obama better cave in, letting this country default now would be disastrous.
Maybe after this they can pass a bill mandating automatic budget appropriations to prevent this from the future.

Man, I really should watch Newsroom.

Really? Damn. Hah. Who knows, maybe I'll find it entertaining. You really shouldn't.
The ratio of this to terrible soap stuff in S1 is like 1:10
You really don't know how this works, do you?
I am surprised Obama isn't on tv pushing the fact that the Republicans are threatening the stability of our economy just to get their own way.
So let the government default til the 2014 elections? Because the GOP will not cave in, Boehner has no reason to cave in, they are safe until 2014. This is Obama's administration, people will unreasonably blame him no matter what.

you is gonna eat a big plate of crow in 11 days or so.
I know it's crazy to think about. The US always pays off it's debt. That's why we have a AAA credit rating and countries like China put their money toward US debt, it may be at a lower interest rate but it's always secure.

If he simply caved right away it would cause a revolt in his party.

Not really...
Although as of September, 2012, none of the Big Three have taken any downgrade action after S&P's August 2, 2011 downgrade from AAA to AA+, Egan-Jones downgraded twice further in 2012. After its initial rating cut on July 16, 2011 from AAA to AA+, Egan-Jones cut its rating a second time on April 5, 2012 from AA+ to AA "because of the lack of any tangible progress on addressing the problems and the continued rise in debt to GDP."[29] On September 14, 2012, Egan-Jones cut its rating a third time from AA to AA-, the lowest of what is considered "high grade", as a reaction to QE3.[30]

One thing that I haven't understood so far: why do people always talk about default, when tax revenues should still be enough to cover the interest and debt?
Does it mean defaulting is preferable to diverting money from other stuff to cover debt service?

I really hope I do, honestly. I just don't see the GOP backing down without any sort of concessions at this point though. 2014 can't come soon enough, boot the Tea Party out asap.
Congress has to vote to raise the debt ceiling. If they don't the country automatically defaults on all its loans.
There's no two ways about it.
Its logistically impossible. The government gets millions of invoices every day. You'd have to manually shift through all of that crap to determine what need to be paid and what doesnt.
Sure, but saying "Well Obama just has to compromise then" elevates them to the level of a force of nature. Its like saying "well if a tornado is going to hit I guess we just need to brace ourselves and get ready for repair".
Weren't some of those credit agencies still giving the obviously horrible mortgages AAA ratings even days before the collapse?
It feels like for once, Obama isn't playing politics. I like this. Too bad it took the Republicans going bat-shit insane too bring it out but better late than never.
So default refers to not paying any invoice, rather than just debt? This is not the impression I have of what defaulting means.
I hope the country defaults
Time to separate the have and have nots
I hope the country defaults
Time to separate the have and have nots
It's more like "If a tornado hits, we'd better pray it doesn't kill us and a second one doesn't come to finish the job."
All the while knowing a second one is indeed coming.
Obama should have made this stand a few years ago, mind. Was always going to come to a head at some point

I'm not concerned. The votes are there, and Boehner has already told Wall Street and House republicans that he won't allow a default. He's just waiting as long as possible so he can say "we tried, we fought hard, but we couldn't get it done..."
If he simply caved right away it would cause a revolt in his party.
America...........why?
