So, today I competed in my second jiu-jitsu tournament, the Joslin's Canadian Open Grappling Championships, the largest grappling tournament in Canada.
Here's the rundown of my matches. I competed in the first match in my division.
I was able to get the takedown, and started trying to get a hold of an arm, but he was defending well by grabbing his belt.
After transitioning back and forth from mount to side control and back again, racking up the points, I was able to grab an arm and sink in the arm bar. He didn't tap at first and was almost able to turn out of it, but eventually he was forced to tap:
Boogie gets his first submission win in competition.
Next match:
My opponent pulled me right into his guard. He didn't want to play standing at all. He kept going for kimuras and sweeps, and I was continually having to fend off his attacks.
I lost 4-2, but my opponent went on to win the division, so I feel pretty good about taking him the distance.
In No-gi competition
My opponent took me down, and then proceeded to stall through the entire match. I was trying to work from the bottom, but he just shut me down but never tried much himself.
At one point I got him in a halfway decent guillotine choke attempt, but he was able to get out of it.
I lost the match 2-0.
All told, I'm pretty satisfied with my performance.
