So, today I competed in my second jiu-jitsu tournament, the Joslin's Canadian Open Grappling Championships, the largest grappling tournament in Canada.

Here's the rundown of my matches. I competed in the first match in my division.

I was able to get the takedown, and started trying to get a hold of an arm, but he was defending well by grabbing his belt.

After transitioning back and forth from mount to side control and back again, racking up the points, I was able to grab an arm and sink in the arm bar. He didn't tap at first and was almost able to turn out of it, but eventually he was forced to tap:

Boogie gets his first submission win in competition.

My opponent pulled me right into his guard. He didn't want to play standing at all. He kept going for kimuras and sweeps, and I was continually having to fend off his attacks.

I lost 4-2, but my opponent went on to win the division, so I feel pretty good about taking him the distance.

My opponent took me down, and then proceeded to stall through the entire match. I was trying to work from the bottom, but he just shut me down but never tried much himself.
At one point I got him in a halfway decent guillotine choke attempt, but he was able to get out of it.

I lost the match 2-0.

All told, I'm pretty satisfied with my performance.

I always thought it was funny when they'd show high school wrestling match photos in the local paper.

The photo captions would say so and so (top) and so and so (bottom).

You've made us proud. Nice job. With hard work and a bit of luck, you'll live up to the greatness of your avatar soon! :)

Seriously, congrats on however many wins you got. I lost track of the story due to my short attention span.

How come no one is looking at your matches? Most of the people are turned to their right..even some of the ones right in front of you...

Anyway, grats on the submission win.

There's another set of bleachers behind the camera. I'd imagine most of those were watching my match.

...at least, there was a decent pop from the crowd when I sunk in the armbar. :D

Since it was open grappling, was judo allowed?

Yeah. One of the women's competitors was a black belt in judo and competed at the Commonwealth games, IIRC.

Congrats, Boogie. Next thing you know, you'll be tapping Eddie Bravo in ADCC. ;)

One question though: why do you wear a mouth piece in a grappling tournament? Was it required?

Who is that rolling around on the floor with Justin Timberlake? But seriously, I once saw a movie where Canadian martial artists got it on like Donkey Kong. Any truth to this? If ever you pass through Kentucky (a place in the southern part of the U.S.), and want to spar with the master of the style of Drunken HickTM, then you know who to call!

Officially, it was required. I'm not sure if they were checking for them though, because I think some people went without.

I clashed heads a bit during my no-gi match though, so it probably saved some of my teeth.

Nice! I'm hoping to have my first competition in 2 weeks.

Awesome, good luck!

I bet whoever ends up unlucky enough to be standing across the mat from you is going to crap their pants :lol :D

I'll spar with you Boogie. I've been training the past year, but not in jiujitsu. I've been learning and performing many forms of kung-fu.

Do you live in Ontario?
Ok, you need to tape this. And if you loose, Boogie, I'll be sure to post it on Sherdog. And subfighter. And every MMA board I can think of :lol :lol :lol

Now NLB2, he said "spar" not "challenge you to a fight" :P

No actually i live in ohio. But hey i'm up for a small vacation up that way. I'll have to plan it sometime and i'll contact you. Although it can be considered a fight if you guys all want a show.

So, is this the beginning of The Boogie Challenge? What other forum members can we match you up against? Does olimario have any formal training?

i have some Tai Kwon Do training as well as some amature wrestling/submission training. Have some interest in getting back into it and possibly doing some Muay Thai training.

Large size too, I think I could hold my own. I'm currently sitting at 6' 8" and about 270lbs. down from my heavy weight of 305lb. (I was getting married and just kinda laid off the training... still paying for it.)

Ideally I like to be at about 280 for weight training.

Ohio here too, BTW.

Boogie would rape me. I have absolutely no training.

I wrestled a senior in high school who weighs 170 and has been wreslting on his team since forever. I told him to get me in a hold. I promptly got out of it and got him into one. I then gave him a wedgie until he submit. It was fun.

Boogie would rape me. Somebody get me some training.

martial arts forum. It seemed like there was a challenge match of some sort every other week. There was a guy who learned all of his martial arts from Tekken and Virtua Fighter challenging people left and right. :lol
