Book Reviews?

Just wondering, but is there any good, comprehensive review site for books on the web? Every time I try to find one I have no luck.

Heck, even a Pitchfork equivalent would be worthwhile. That way I could at least filter out most of the recommendations as self-important wank :P

Good question. I usually find my books in the back of Science News or Entertainment Weekly but without those mags I am lost.

You can search the archives of the New York Times Book Review for free, I think (though it's been a while since I last checked).

Usually I'll just set aside a few hours and start combing through amazon.com, going from list to list, suggestion to suggestion, until I find something that looks good. But as for a uniform site, I haven't found anything.

What kind of books?

I guess just fiction & non-fiction (in the sense of biographies, not medical manuals).

As mentioned in the above post, I usually trawl abouts on Amazon, but its not the same as having a consistent set of reviewers, as you have no real yardstick (ie a history of reviews) to base your appraisal of their views on.

That's exactly what I do.

Just read it. Screw reviews. Stop, if you don't like it; continue, if you do.

All well and good when borrowing from the library, or if I swam in Scrooge-McDuck pools of dollar bills, but I'm talking about buying. And I prefer not doing it blind.
