Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

Played for an hour or two :

2560x1440
Everything max except AO.

60fps ~99% of the gametime with drops when there's a lot of physX-related debris on the screen
Gpu-usage around ~60-70% so the drops are somewhat rare ( this early on in the game ) and there's some headroom to spare.

From a post a few pages back:

1. Download 1.2 from here: http://mrhaandi.blogspot.com/p/injectsmaa.html
2. Extract.
3. Go to the d3d9 folder.
4. Drag all files to your 'steamapps/common/Borderlands 2/Binaries/Win32' folder.
5. Go back to playing an awesome game!

Anyone think the physx stuff makes the game incredibly awesome? It adds so much and feels like you aren't just moving around on flat surfaces. I'm not sure how to explain it but it feels more like you are interacting with a real world rather than floating on top of it.

thanks :) does it make the game look better or is it pretty much the same with less tax on your system? my problem may just be fixed by lowering Physx :(

I was getting around 120 fps with the frame cap unlocked, but drops into the 40s when I over looking large vistas or texture loading after alt tabbing out. I'd imagine that's related. I haven't noticed a big hit with Physx on High, but it certainly does affect performance. For now I'm capped at 60 and it runs and looks great aside from the issues mentioned, although I do wish some of the texture were higher res and the fluids with physx don't look great.

I play at 1080p
680
3570k
both stock
8gbs of ram.

I'm also using smaa injector, and all my settings are maxed.

*Ahem*

What is the smart way to maximize both graphics and physics with Nvidia?

Setting one GPU to do graphics and the other GPU to physics?

Should I be getting drops into the 50s on SLI GTX 580s? It's happening in some firefights in bigger areas.

Should I dedicate one to PhysX? I am on an i7 950 @ 3.8ghz.

Okay, seems the twitter links are now dead but it was from TotalBiscuit saying he's spoken to Nvidia and they've confirmed performance issues with the GTX 680's - they're looking into it, naturally.

GTX 580, i7-2600k @ 4.5GHz, oodles of RAM. PhysX on high, 8xMSAA, 8xTSS.

Getting around 90fps at almost all times, never drops below 60fps even in the biggest battles in 4 player co-op.

Btw, PhysX+Phaselock = omg.

How is this even possible? I have a 690GTX, i5-2500k @ 4.7GHZ and more ram than I will ever need and I can't keep a steady 60FPS at 1080p. Before anyone even ask there is nothing wrong with my PC, 100% stable and going of benchmark scores I'm doing pretty well for my setup. The main thing I notice is frame-rate dropping to 50 when looking at certain structures from far away.

MSAA and TSS actually working?

I have the same setup and yes, I'm getting drops to 50 in some parts. I have Physx on high.

See above.

Dammit, why cant I get the game to run with Afterburner :(

The game "Stops Working" if I have Afterburner on. I turn it off, and it works like a charm. What can I do to fix this, GAF. I hate FRAPS.

When I use the smaa injector I get screen tearing. I typically just use D3DOverrider. I've tried the in game vsync, I've set the frame rate cap at 60, and I've tried to limit the frame rate with nvidia inspector. I just can't get the tearing to go away when I use smaa.

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have a gtx 590 and I'm getting some serious fps drops with physX on high. Is there something I need to do make it stick closer to 60 fps?

The nvidia control panel has the physX set to auto select - do I need to dedicate one to physX myself or does it automatically know to do that with a gtx 590?

Lastly - should I disable dual card mode (or something like that) in case sli is the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, same settings. Are you running SLI? I just dedicated one card to physx and I didn't notice much of a difference.
Yep, i7-950 @ 4.0GHz with two GTX580 in SLI. SLI working and the second card is using the PhysX (not dedicated).

I'll overclock the cards tonight to see if I see any difference.

Is there a good (recent) article that explains the different types of anti aliasing?

I see I can screw with AA in Catalyst Control Center, and it seems I never get to pick which method of AA a game uses, just increase the setting. Is this something I can do through CCC or do I need to use an injector?

This game is so well optimized, I can play it with everything on high but phsyx and get 60+ fps or add physx and get about 30, but Saints Row 2 chugs like a mofo. hahaha

Just use SMAA injector. It's super easy to install and probably the lightest AA right now. If you get performance loss, turn off ambient occlusion in the games video settings.

Here was Deadstar's post quoting my old instructions on how to install for BL2:

I just did the
Symbiosis
quest near the beginning. I was getting severe drops when looking at the huge town area. I can't be the only one not getting 60 fps there.

It's such a pain that AMD guys can't get physX. I really like the effects but pretty much putting all the settings down to low and I still get 30fps once rocks and stuff start flying. I wish they had better control over what was enabled and not. Gun effects and blood would be good enough for me. Kinda lame it's all or nothing.

Pretty surprised how well my 460 is holding up with everything maxed out (including high physx). I guess it's base (ue3) is fairly old tech, but none the less good job gearbox!

Really makes me want ports of other ue3 games - particularly enslaved. It ran like absolute dog shit on ps3 but was still incredible.

Does nVidia pay or give some kind of benefit to companies that use physx?

I know nil about physics engines in games but I do know other alternatives exist that are enabled on all capable systems (ie Havok).

EDIT: NM figured it out.

Since it all depends on your CPU, lowering most graphic setting won't do anything to help with PhysX performance.

Are people getting solid 60 fps when in the first bosses area? I feel like anytime there is a big townlike place my framerate goes down a bit.

so this is weird

when i'm in the menus & inventory, i can't see my mouse pointer! i have to hold right click to get it to show, and i can't let go.

any help?

never mind!
edit:

6# Mouse Cursor is Invisible
Unplug any controller or USB device that you have plugged into your computer to resolve this bug.

What settings should I run this game at? I got pretty poor performance and High-Med settings. Should I turn off V-Sync, Physx, and FXAA and see what happens? I'm thinking its actually my processor screwing this game up, but I'm not sure.

FX 6100 @ 3.3 GHZ
8 GB Memory
GTX 460 SE 1GB
1440x900 Screen Res.

Some sgssaa bits

0x000000C1 or 0x200012C1

Don't know which one works try both and post to let me know how it goeses.

Hey PC Borderlands 2 GAF, hoping you can help me out.

My game keeps crashing. Running at Nvidia 670 GTX, reinstalled 3 times, updated drivers and turned all the graphics settings to the bare minimum and it still randomly crashes. I've played the same area about 9 times now and it's driving me crazy that I can't play the game I've wanted to play for so long.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

the game runs fine for me, only setting i have on medium is the physics, everything else on max, when i had the physics on max everytime i got in to a heavy physics scene, like a huge explosion my frame would drop to around 48, after i lowered down to medium i get 60 frames all the time, im using the latest nvidia drivers, 306.23

my rig

i7 2600k
gtx 580 SC
W7
8Gb ram

Any crash info or crash log? Check the Borderlands 2 steam folders for a crash log.

A list of things to try:

-Older drivers.
-Beta drivers.
-Disable any extra programs you have running through task manager.

Edit: Try windowed mode too.
