Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

Any way to fix this? When comparing items, my character blocks part of the menu a lot of the time. I can't see the trash/favorite icons until the menu pivots back the other direction. I'd be happy if I could move the menu to the left or just completely get rid of the character model from that screen.

Nope, just bad UI design.

I have to requote this but isn't BL2 a directx10 game? Was wondering if I can try that one. Not that I would expect better results since I have SMAA at ULTRA right now and everything still runs at 60.

It's DX9

Edit: Hmmm, but apparently you can get direct X 10 plus some other neat effects:

Thanks, had to check to make sure.

OOOOO, thanks for that link.

I'm trying it now to see if it works or not.

Edit: Actually, it has an option for allow D3D11 since this is updated.
Edit2: Doesn't seem to do anything. I don't see any motion blur or extra bloom.

I got extra bloom and the motion blur affects the rotation of the menus hahah

Is that basically it then and no real difference to you? Trying to decide if it's worth it or not. Do you like the extra bloom or is it too much?

Sorry for not seeing this sooner but yes, there is some difference while rotating the camera. More important is the performance hit I don't notice. It feels subtle to me. If it doesn't kill your 60fps then I would leave it on as it doesn't hinder. Other than the loading screen blurring it works fine.

Random shot just because I like how clean the game looks....

Only wish I could run this at higher res but I don't have a 1080p tv/monitor at my disposal anymore.

just an update about my earlier situation. updated my 7870 drivers to 12.8 cap 3 , switched off AO, set PsyX to low. framerates for the enemy encounters have improved- and i am no longer seeing the sub 30fps during battles. still really early in the game tho.

something is still not right tho. whenever i shoot one of those ice rocks (the ones with items in it), the fps dips for a split second as the ice shatters into pieces. vv annoying

You on XFIRE? No way your GPU should be struggling with the game unless you're CPU is garbage. You try reducing the FOV to around 80? Maybe decreasing draw distance to high and/or turning SSAO off as well.

I went from running dual 6850s to running one with everything high and low physx, out of curiosity. I couldn't hold a stable 30fps.

Dammit spotflux has stuffed my router settings, anyone have any tips to change them back in laymans terms, I'm not really familiar with networking...

Dammit, why cant I get the game to run with Afterburner :(

The game "Stops Working" if I have Afterburner on. I turn it off, and it works like a charm. What can I do to fix this, GAF. I hate FRAPS.

Running afterburner 2.2.2 on this side, no problems. I don't use it for screens or fps though.

Does anyone know if an 8600 GTS 256MB is "good enough" as a dedicated PhysX card for a game like B2? Nvidia lists it on their site as a valid PhysX GPU, but I'm wondering how well it can perform... Thanks for your opinions!

I had that the first time and had to do a system restore.

This time though it seems to be working fine without Spotflux working. To be honest I've hardly gone on the internet at home since BL2 is out.

Run my iPad on the side of my desk the same time I game so I can surf internet/watch TV while playing

EDIT - Posted at the bottom of that support page today

I’m pleased to say we released 2.9.3 yesterday which should prevent this problem reoccurring, and in some cases will solve it automatically.

We apologise for the inconvenience this issue caused. We are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances that resulted in this problem, and why it did not show up on any of our test VMs.

Thats is because you probably use an injector

Code:
Open MSI OSD and create a new profile that point to Borderlands2.exe

To get your MSI display to work when using an injector,

1.Go to your afterburner folder>bundle>osdserver>profiles and open the borderlands2 cfg you just created.
2.Change the hooking lines to match whats below,save and close.
Now your monitoring will work

[Hooking]
EnableHooking=1
EnableFloatingInjectionAddress=1
EnableDynamicOffsetDetection=1
HookLoadLibrary=1
HookDirectDraw=1
HookDirect3D8=1
HookDirect3D9=1
HookDXGI=1
HookOpenGL=1

I didnt try it myself but this workaround worked for me on BF3 with fxaa injector

Any fun .ini tweaks so far to make the game look even better? Someone shared about reducing texture pop-in and it works. I demand more!

Rename Launcher.exe to Launcher.back or whatever you want, then make a copy of Borderlands2.exe and rename that copy to Launcher.exe
No more launcher screen.

Anyone experience intermittent microstuttering? Occasionally my game gets very stuttery, even though it's locked to 60fps. After a while, it goes back to being perfectly smooth.

I set physx to medium (AMD card) and my 4.2ghz 3570K seems to do "OK".

As in the framerate is playable but there are some FPS dips. That is single player only. With friends I'm sure I will have to turn it off.

Some of the physx effects are cool, like the weird jelly like liquid, the debris that scatters every where and the cloth physics are a neat little touch, but overall I'm not super impressed.

I don't see why I need physx for the lame pools of blood and some of the other lighter effects.

As a matter of interest, here is an article on Geforce.com scrutinizing the Physx effects found in the game :
http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/borderlands-2-physx/

I don't like Nvidia's policy regarding money hatting but more often than not it results in a more impressive looking PC version.
I just hope that Physx 3.0 will run better on the CPU so every PC gamers can benefit from this.

Hmm that article suggests that physx on medium removes all instances of the ( godawful ) fluid system, can someone try it out real quick ? I removed my VPN and now I'm stuck waiting for the game to unlock officially sigh.

I'm sure that is a pretty low priority at Nvidia. I can't see them actively decreasing, what they see as a competitive advantage. Also, if AMD really wants to push for less proprietary solutions, they should be campaigning developers the same way Nvidia does.

It won't. It makes no business sense to allow it to. This is a big feature for Nvidia cards and in this thread alone, has accounted for at least a few upgrades and/or new Nvidia card purchases from gamers looking to experience the game in all its glory.

Tom's Hardware put out an article nearly two years back that analyzed Physx performance on AMD cards and found the instruction set to be purposefully inefficient, thereby exaggerating the performance improvement on Nvidia cards. I'd like to think this changed in the two years since, but this game all but assures me this has not been the case. AMD card owners with decent CPU's are still experiencing heavy FPS drops when Physx is called.

We (or at least AMD users) need to light a fire under their asses!

I have no allegiance to either company, but my recent switch from a GTX 460 to an HD 7950 is hurting me a little with this game.

Other games without physx not at all, but with this one a little bit of me has a tiny bit of regret.

It also appears Gearbox could issue a patch so when Physx instructions are called, the CPU is more efficient, making this less a hardware issue and one of inefficient coding. Maybe there's a gentlemen's agreement on this that Gearbox won't release such a patch for some time?

It's not in their hands. They are using Nvidia's PhysX libraries, which are purposefully geared towards performing well only on Nvidia hardware. It would be a massive undertaking on their part to reverse engineer these libraries to work better on AMD hardware. So much so that they might as well have just written their own physics and particle systems from the ground up, negating the cost savings of using PhysX.

So it sounds as if it is in their hands, just not feasibly expected because the time/money cost associated with making it so.

This unfortunately sends a muddled message to AMD gamers.

Why didn't they just call the lowest setting "Physx Off" since everything gets disabled anyway

They are still using PhysX for all physics and particles, so it's never off. As that chart shows, only Medium and High utilize the GPU. Low only runs PhysX on the CPU.

So the countdown timer for the preload just hit zero 15 minutes ago but my steam client is still showing preload complete, even after restarting steam. What gives?
