Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

So, is anyone getting random freezes, possibly video card underclocking?
This game always seems to lock up, then my core clock is put down to 400Mhz

I keep having the game stall for a second then resume. If i restart the game it seems to resolve the issue for a time. I also noticed that when i changed my network settings to friends only the issue seemed to be resolved. I will do some more testing tonight.

Anyone experience intermittent microstuttering? Occasionally my game gets very stuttery, even though it's locked to 60fps. After a while, it goes back to being perfectly smooth.

Are you using SMAA, SweetFX or any other injectors? I tried the first two and was getting some stuttering every now and then even though I was at a constant 60 FPS. Very annoying so I ended up not using them.

I'm getting screen tearing with vsync on/off and various fps caps in the game. Not sure which combinations would help.

If you have an nvidia card try to enable adaptive v sync from the nvidia control panel. That's what I have been using, it doesnt eliminate 100% of tearing but pretty close to it

Great damn game. Now if only my Tritton headset would stop borking after an hour or so of play. Mic just stops working for no discernible reason.

I'm using SweetFX for the SMAA injection and I noticed that after I installed it, switching weapons with the mouse scroll wheel doesn't work right anymore. Anyone else had that problem and know how to fix it?

A buddy of mine I've Co-Oped with is having some FPS issues.

The framerate is perfectly fine for about 10-20 minutes, then drops to >10 for about 2 minutes, then jumps back up to perfectly fine.

His rig isn't the greatest:

Core2 duo 3.0 GHZ
Nvidia 9800 GT
8GB DDR3 RAM

We've tried fiddling with resolution, view distance, shadows, filtering, you name it we've dropped it to zero, but it doesn't seem to affect the sudden drop in FPS. He's got the latest drivers (the old drivers did the exact same thing). I feel like we're missing something simple.

Any suggestions?

Does he have similar issues in other games? It sounds like CPU spike/flushing the cache something something. I'm dead tired and can't remember what everything's called but maybe it would give you some ideas.

Why didn't they just call the lowest setting "Physx Off" since everything gets disabled anyway

Because PhysX is never off. It's not off if you're using an AMD GPU, it's not off if you're playing on a 360, and it's not off if you're playing on a PS3.

Most people don't realize this, but PhysX is a set of middleware for physics simulation in the exact same way that Havok is. It's just that it also has the benefit of cranking up the details for the purpose of offloading some of the calculations to NVIDIA GPUs.

It's why you can still turn PhysX to High even if you're using an AMD/ATI GPU - all those physics calculations are still possible, it's just that they're being done by your CPU instead of GPU, which is why it performs a lot slower.

It's at least a place to start.

Nope, no issues like that in any other games.

What FPS could i expect with a 560 Ti, on high settings & PhysX???

I'll let you know if i remember to check this thread again. I've been playing on high everything with physx on low with a 560ti and a phenom ii x4 965 and I've been getting constant 60fps with an occasional dip. Medium gave me some dips into the mid to high 40s. I haven't tried high yet, so I'll try that tonight. My 560ti is overclocked a little bit though.

1080p? 40fps in coop games? If yes, i should be fine in lower resolution and 560 on medium physx :)

Damn running a 460 and I can max out everything at a stable 60 fps or so though physx on medium or high brings drops. Kinda want to upgrade now since the physx effects are so freaking cool.

I'm getting a really annoying issue with the resolution.

The game loads up fine no problems, but every time I go into the menus and try and change the resolution to 1920 x 1080, loads up in 1280 x 720 for some reason it just makes a load beeping noses!? and the game crashes.

I've gone into the config files WillowEngine in Steam and my documents and change everything related to 1280 x 720 to 1920 x 1080 and has made not difference.

Any idea's? Thanks.

This is disappointing. I gave my computer a hefty upgrade with 2 x 670 GTX on top of my i7 2600k @ 4,3GHz thinking it would be enough for a stable framerate in this game. I get the occasional drop to sub 40 fps in action packed situations. Reading this thread it seems I should be able to expect better performance. Either that, or some people are not as picky with dropping framerates. I run at 1920 x 1080 with PhysX set to high. Does anyone have a similar setup and how's your performance?

Try running without PhysX for a bit.

it crash when launcher starts up. what did the update do other than break the game more?

EDIT: corrupt file. good job. lets see what dmg it did :O

Can you set one 670 for dedicated physx and the other one for graphics? I think that would give you the results other people talk about here.

Problably 60 FPS just about everywhere, maybe some minor hiccups when Physx gets too crazy.

I'll give it a shot. And if that fails, turn down the PhysX level. Will return with results.

This is really bugging me. Should I be getting drops into the low 50s when looking at large vistas that have a lot of structures on the screen?

I am talking about for instance the whole area where the midget riding a bullymong quest is at the beginning. If I go out onto the docks area and look at the big town where all the enemies are, my fps go into the 50s when panning it in my view.

I have SLI GTX 580s and an i7 950 @ 3.8ghz. All settings maxed + SMAA ultra and 1920x1200. Should this be happening? Everyone keep saying how everything is locked at 60 but it doesn't seem to be the case for me in instances like that.

Dude... is it really that big a difference from 60 to low 50s? I mean really, that's just being too picky.

Multi GPU setups get major microstutter when the framerates go below the refresh rate. So 50 looks closer to 30. SLI might not be as bad with this as Crossfire though.

After 17 hours in I'm now getting getting getting a windows error saying "Borderlands 2 launcher has stopped working". Anyone else?

Try opening the game without the launcher add "-nolauncher" on Steam's launch options.

Even without your error this is still recommended, the launcher was probably only worth having the first time you open the game.

This worked great. Thanks!

Is the 30fps cap a bug or something? I have a 6970 and enabled high physx just to check out the effects. Everytime debris or fluids started coming out in mass numbers, my framerate would stay locked at 30fps. It just stays there until I stop shooting or things calm down. Then my framerate shoots up to 60 again. It actually feels like the game is just capping my framerate for some reason. Kinda like when vsync just halves your framerate (and I don't have vsync enabled)

Reading some posts above, seems some people with nvidia cards are also experiencing the same thing.

My card is lightly oc'd, but at 1080 you can expect idle at 60 and mid to low 40s when the Physx heats up.

Are there any FXAA vs. SMAA vs. stock comparison pics out there?

on 1080p, SMAA on, fxaa off, everything high (i don't remember if i had ambient occlusion on or off), with my slight overclock and physx on high, I also got near constant 60fps with occasional dips to mid to low 40s like Dynamic3. I'm going to leave it on for non-multi games.

Am I the only one getting nothing out of a subwoofer on this game? I'm getting surround sound but nothing at all from the sub. I checked out a bunch of other games to make sure the wiring and cables and settings were all still good, and all of them push the sub but this.

Here's some I took at max settings.
