Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

So I'm trying to figure out whether I should get this for my laptop or my PS3. How demanding is it? My laptop isn't exactly a beast, but I can typically run console/PC multiplatform games at higher-than-console settings without issue.

If you've had good luck with other UE 3 games on your laptop, you should be okay. What kind of hardware is in the laptop?

Can someone tell me out to enable downsampling with Borderlands 2?

I have a GTX 680 and Core i5 3550k, would you recommend downsampling or is it too much of a perf hit?

Or should I just keep using SMAA?

Reposting for the new page.

Is there another thread that covered this?

What's your laptop? I play on an Asus g74 and it runs and looks AMAZING @ 1080p w/ physx on.

What I'm a bit worried about is my CPU. The Steam store page says that the minimum requirement is a dual core CPU at 2.4 GHz, whereas mine (an i5-2410m) runs at 2.3 GHz with turbo boost up to 2.6 GHz (two cores). So I'm not entirely sure what to make of that. Wish there was a demo.

You'll have no problem with that SB mobile CPU.

Ok, thanks! Didn't really think so either, but the Steam store page listing dual core @ 2.4 GHz as the minimum requirement made me wonder. Of course, those numbers don't mean very much when comparing CPUs of different generations, but this is a brand new game after all.

My GPU (a GT 555M) should be fine for it too I think, at least at 720p with PhysX set to low and some other stuff turned down (shadows always seem to have a big impact). I can typically run 360/PS3/PC games at above console-level settings with good performance, so I'd expect the same to be true here.

So, there is basically no known way to get physX working on an AMD setup (i5 2500, 6950)? There isn't some tweak I can do to turn of certain features or something to get it to run stable?

I just tried tinkering a little with high physx and turning a few settings down a notch on my 6970. I would suggest going for medium and turning off AO, textures to mid, distance down 1 notch, and whatever else you can do without. you may be able to retain at least 30fps this way. The game looks great with maxed settings even without physx though.

Setting physX to anything other than low locks me to 30 sadly in battles regardless of putting every setting to its lowest. I guess I could try living with it for a while and locking the entire frame rate at 30. Maybe it wouldn't be so jarring then.

I might be crazy, but I like the toilet goo!

I gave up on PhysX, my fps was all over the place with my 6970. Not a big deal to me and now with all other settings maxed it get solid 60 fps bar a few slight drops to high 50's on rare occasions. Also disabled the black outlines, which is personal preference but I think it looks a lot better.

I know a lot of people will disagree and say it destroys the artstyle, but I think the game looks better with outlines, depth of field and bloom all turned off. Increases performance also.

I am running everything on High including PhysX with the SMAA injector instead of FXAA, and I'm using adaptive v-sync from the nVidia control panel. I have Outlines, DoF and bloom all turned off and I get a pretty consistant 60FPS except in sections where there is a ton going on at once i will get some dips in performance down to 50FPS or so

I think they mean a Core2Duo at 2.4 GHz. So your i5 should be fine. It is still just UE3.

My Overclocked GTX460 is handling this game like a champ. Feels very smooth with most things on max or high. Running at about 50 fps with drops down to 40 at 1080p.
I guess that 670 GTX can wait a few more months =)

I play most games at 30FPS. This way I don't get all pissed off when a 60FPS game drops a frame.

My rule is that if it's 30FPS on consoles, then it's 30 on my PC as well.

This will make my PC take longer to get outdated as well if I'm used to 30FPS all the time.

Interesting, what utility do you use to cap your framerate at 30? I know BL2 has numerous framerate caps but I mean for other games that don't have them.

Just a simple and quick question - I will have no problem maxing this game out with a GTX670, i5 2500k @ 4.0GHZ & 16GB of ram @ 1920x1200, correct?

You will have drops to ~40-50 fps when big fights going on. But thats a known problem for 670 and 680. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Turns out I had an issue with my processor fan...replaced and now I'm getting 40+ FPS everywhere on all max settings! My processor is liquid cooled but has a fan too and the lack let it run, but also kind of 'capped' it I guess? I don't know.

Also I'm usually really picky about visuals, but the FXAA stuff has always been fine for me.

Then you should switch right over to SMAA. It's far better.

You could always spend around $100 and get an NVIDIA GPU to do the PhysX processing for you...I've been looking at this EVGA GTX 650 SC card for $110 AR at Amazon to compliment my GTX 680. That is, if you have the PSU headroom and space.

Maybe but I googled my problem and a lot of people seemed to be having the same problem with other games as well, namely I saw people reporting the same thing on battlenet regarding WoW and Diablo 3.

Mine does the same. Some times I can control alt delete, other times I can't. I can also be just sitting on the desktop doing things and then get a blank screen and that'll be it, reset time.

I'm fairly convinced this is the latest nvidia drivers. Sometimes when I get back to windows I get a msg saying I had a BSOD or that nvidia driver software failed, kernel problem or something.

So don't know what to do. Tried to reinstall a clean version of the previous WQHL drivers from nvidia but it didn't update physx because I had the latest drivers apparently. So I don't know whats going on.

Well, in my case, a clean reinstall of Windows 7 and new sets of drivers didn't fix the problem. What did solve it was upgrading the firmware of my Crucial M4 SSD. If you have one of these in your system, I highly recommend you upgrade even if you aren't at the 5000 hours of operation point or aren't experiencing symptoms. My SSD was at 1504 hours of operation when this bug started happening (note, I usually didn't get a BSOD with this bug; the only consistent symptoms were that the OS would freeze after about 60 minutes of operation, regardless of what I was doing at the time. The keyboard stayed unlocked and I could move and see the mouse cursor (although sometimes I would get a black screen with the mouse cursor still visible and moveable), but ctrl-alt-del and alt-tabbing had no effect - only way to fix was to hard reset. Since I've upgraded the firmware, I've gotten zero lockups, even with the latest Nvidia drivers.

You can check the firmware of your drive(s) by using CrystalDiskInfo.

Nvidia made mention of an upcoming performance patch in the comments section of their webpage. The game is severely CPU limited, even with PhysX on low.

That would just make me pissed off all the time. Well, more pissed off than usual.

I am still thinking there is something weird going on with the performance. If I come to a big open area with a ton of structures/enemies and pan around, my fps drop into the 50s, even when not engaging in combat. Then I look to an area with less stuff and it goes back to 60 fps locked. Should SLI GTX 580s really be having trouble with this game? It's kind of frustrating because a lot of these big places are where you need to fight then the performance dips even lower when the fighting starts.

Try using one card as a physx card.

So I have a 670 and noticed my game crashes whenever I have 4 player co op and a lot of stuff his happening on screen. Anyone else have this problem?

I did that, but it didn't help my fps in those areas. This is even without fighting anything, just overlooking large areas filled with structures, etc.

I have the same issue with physx on med or high (GTX 670). I'm running physx on low now to keep it at 60 fps. Not really what I expected when buying a 670... I'm hoping the fabled performance patch will improve things.

anyone with 3D vision really should checkout the helix patch

http://helixmod.blogspot.co.uk/

the fix doesn't completely fix everything but does most things and its easily one of the best 3D games out there when you apply it, think trine 2 levels of 3D goodness, just had to disable frostrum and minimise convergence and use the alice profile, can't believe how many times nvidia fuck up the profiles :/

runs well in 3D even with physx on high( if you have the cards of course ) slows down at some points but its always perfectly playable
