Borderlands 4 runs at 30FPs Docked on Nintendo Switch 2

Okay I'll just put it bluntly:Borderlands 4 on the Switch 2 could barely run at 30fps with 4 enemies on screen in docked mode. It had horrendous input delay, and the render resolution was seemingly turned all the way down.I'll talk more about it in a video maybe tomorrow

A game runs at 30 FPS on Switch 2 you say???

Publishers should really start booking time with devs like Panic Button to really optimize their ports for the Switch 2.

Things are no different than the era of the Switch 1. Most modern games are going to need extra care when it comes to Switch 2 ports if they want them to play well. UE5 is dogshit, and you really need to maximize as much as you can on a portable like the Switch 2 or Steam Deck.

Looks fine to me

Yup

Clearly 30 fps, but I don't see anything like what the tweet is saying 🤷‍♂️
I posted that video way early in the day and this is the thread to decide that someone's words on twitter is worth more than the fucking footage of the game demo recorded?

Again, Switch 2's version is october 3, the demo build is likely a couple weeks old, it surprisingly looks better than I expected it would be.

not surprising,
remember how CPU intensive Borderlands 3 was?
it's probably impossible to get this running even close to 60fps due to the CPU alone

also remember that this is Unreal Engine 5, so always expect the worst when a game runs on this shitshow of an engine.

Someone is lying
Looked at the video, very controlled environment, low number of enemies and the guy is basically walking forward & ADSing most of the time. Dunno about you guys, but when I play BL I bounce around and circle strafe a lot. Look how he struggles to fight the levitating guy at 5:50.

Still, its the same demo that the twitter guy would have played at gamescon. The experience cannot differ that much.

going frame by frame, I can find some fps drops in certain scenes, like when he jumps on the man cannon at 9:45, and also when he fires the rocket at around 13:31 it seems to have uneven framepacing, as 1 dropped frame is followed by 1 early frame... typical UE5 of course, since the built in Vsync is just a broken mess. (as are the entire engine's default features of course)

but overall this seems to lock to 30fps just fine here. which would be on par with last gen's base console performance, and therefore expected.
that's not a very demanding scene tho, and the guy plays like some CoD kiddy from 2009 would play a shooter... so very hard to judge.

what I absolutely do believe however is the following part:
It had horrendous input delay
because Unreal Engine games often have insane input lag when they use just the standard shitty Vsync of UE5. Fortnite at 60fps even for example feels like an absolute nightmare to play to me. so 30fps with the same Vsync in UE5? probably while taxing the GPU pretty hard as well? THAT IS BEGGING to feel like absolute shit to play.

say what you will about FromSoft's performance and uneven framepacing, at least their vsync's input lag is insanely low compared to most games

What will games in 2027-2030 running on "next gen" hardware and handhelds look and run like on Switch 2? My guess is this will become a first party/indie machine much like most Nintendo consoles are anyhow.

Certainly worth $350

EDIT: just under $12 per frame at that price!

I don't know how anyone could expect solid performance from graphically intense third party games on a machine that's punching below a Series S.

:pie_thinking:

It's going to be another machine for first party, indies, and JRPGs. And that's just fine. It will be great at those things.

The 30 fps isn't anything new, but the apparent heavy input lag and the settings turned all way down is new, according to that person. It still have time to be worked on, but not much.
Kinda sounds like some of those Switch 1 ports that should've just been kept behind closed doors and used as training for future games.

Well, yeah. It's about on par with the Steam Deck, and I wouldn't try playing BL4 on the Steam Deck, or any other recent UE game frankly, so I guess that makes sense.

Guys do you think Switch 2 is in a better or worse position vs Switch 1 in terms of Switch 1 vs XSX/PS5, and Switch 2 vs Xbox 5/PS6?.
I know we dont have concrete facts with next gen, i just wondered whar you're feeling are, which Switch will be worse tech wise vs there 'next gen' opponants.

I'm just wondering if we can expect a load of 'impossible ports' take two over the next few years.

So they could get Borderlands 3 running with unlocked framerate on Switch 1, but can't be bothered to do an unlocked mode on Switch 2? Not even a 40FPS mode for 120hz displays? bull shit

the Switch 2 is generally in a better position due to the insane slowing down of graphics improvements. it has the full DirectX 12 Ultimate feature set, and that's where the industry generally orientates itself around even when using other APIs.

also with the leaked Sony handheld, which is half as powerful as the PS5 GPU wise, at least on that front it will be fine for the time being. the CPU side is the bigger issue, especially because of UE5 being generally so shit. so the CPU could become an issue down the line, the RAM and GPU will be generally fine, and in a better position than the Switch 1's GPU was vs the PS5/XSX

60fps and responsiveness are a must in this title.

Its UE5 game so hopefully they have turned all intensive settings off. Or is it RT only game ?

everytime when something something negative about switch 2, lordocidax:

He's in the bad and good threads, but some of users I didn't even know exist if not for the negative thread lol.

And I feel your disappointment guys, I felt the same way when I saw how current gen games where running on PS5 and XSX and decided to upgrade my GPU instead of migrating to consoles.
