Bought a DS today. (Long Read, be warned all ye who enter)

So I was under the impression that none of the stores around where I live would get their shipments of DS's in until well after the new year. Every other store I'd been to that day and before had all been completely sold out within a half an hour of the release. I had gone to the Circuit City, browsed, looked to see if they had any DSes in stock yet just for the shit of it. They did not so I hopped back into the car with my parents and asked if we could check FYE(Fucking Y Expensive), when they didn't I figured screw it I'll just spend $100 something of my money on overpriced CDs (jesus christ FYE sucks ass). Black Sabbath Black Box which is every Sabbath album during Ozzy years and John Lennon - Mind Games. I bought all this shit because I figured if nobody else had what I wanted neither would the Game Spot down a ways inside the same mall. After all, every other GameSpot I'd been to or called was out of stock plus FYE and Circuit City I had been to that same day.

I walk to GameSpot anyway just to look around with my $110+ goods I had purchased and asked the clerk "I know it's a long shot but you don't happen to have any DSs in stock do you?" The dude said yes and they had all the games as well. Super, only I just spent a needed portion of my money on CDs and shit. So not 5 minutes after I bought the CDs from FYE I walked back in and had the same clerk who rang me up give me a refund. Went back to gamestop, bought the DS and Mario 64 DS, ate at subway with my mom and step dad, then went to go see The Life Aquatic.

Before we left the mall, while in Subway I checked my half charged (yay) DS to see if it had any dead pixels and there were none. Played a little bit of Metroid Prime Hunters demo, it's decent but I have to say, the level of fun you have in that demo is an extreme variable depending on what control settings you have on.

The DS screens are both rather small and not the best to view 3D images in my opinion. Playing Mario 64 on the tiny screen made me wish there were a way to hook my DS up to my TV via AV cables. It was as though the screen itself was what made the game look slightly grainy and jaggy. Nice and bright, just not extremely crisp and much too small. There seemed plenty more room on the top flip part of the DS to widen the screen a good deal and not get rid of the GREAT speakers.

When I got home I had played through as much of the 1st level in Mario 64 as I could with Yoshi. I'm not sure what to do as Yoshi in the part of the first level where you have to fly through the air. I think you need Mario and his flying hat. When I had read reviews about Mario 64s controls I blew off the medias comments about the lack of a analog control being a major blow to the games fun. I figured they were just weaksauce pussies like GamePro was in their review of the original Metroid Prime. They were right however, Mario 64 DS is rather hard to control. It's especially irritating having to position yourself just right as Yoshi to get in front of a wild enemy in order to swallow or attack them while standing still. The thumb strap and the analog control through the use of the touch screen is nifty but not very effective since there really is no resistance. Plus the analog circle moves awkwardly as you move out of the bounds of the control area.

The thumb strap is awkward because I'm not sure how to keep it on the tip of my thumb, and I don't know how to use it without putting fingerprints all over the screen. I'm nervous using the touch screen on ANY device with a that technology even though it‘s what you‘re supposed to do. I've been told I have OCD because of how protective I am of the screens of my electronic devices (and my glasses). I wish the stylus was made out of a kind of hard polyfoam or softer plastic. I'll also keep my eyes peeled for wear and tear on the stylus since I've heard it tends to sharpen on the DS screen. It's cool it comes with another stylus. I hate scratches and fingerprints. I hate fingerprints because it's often when I'm cleaning my lenses/screens that I put the most little fine scratches in them.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase and feel as though I'm going to get more use out of my DS than a shit load of Sabbath... even through a shit load of Black Sabbath sure is awesome. ;_;

Maybe next Christmas. :P

I had bought much too much music with the other money I got during Christmas.

Buying too much music in one go isn't a good idea. I'll wait until some other time to rebuy the sabbath box because I've wanted it for a while.

I need to listen to all my other new stuff first.

it's all about PictoChat and waiting for GOOD games to come out. like Advance Wars DS, Final Fantasy IIIj remake and HOPEFULLY IF MY PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED SOMEDAY, Nectaris DS.

screw the BS CDs, just d/l the MP3s :lol

When you get Mario as a playable character the controls will feel allot better. Yoshi controls like crap compared to Mario.

I really wish I'd looked at the lineup for the immediate future before I went out and bought this. I'm starting to have second thoughts...

I thought DS was supposed to have a shitload of new games coming out soon after launch. I didn't know all the games that were announced at E3 were going to be released in what seems like is going to be November of NEXT year.

God damn...

What is GameStops return policy?

Well zoo keeper should be a fun puzzle game, and that's on the 17th of January. Febuary brings Warioware. Not a great lineup, but if it's not your only console, then I think it's worth hanging on to.

I think it's worth selling and rebuying as soon as new, better games are released for it. :-/

I wish i thought of this stuff before I bought it.

Damn it...

I do have a GBA, but let me say this and I mean this as no offense to you because we're tight like that fo'real.

I bought my GBA to play GBA games. I don't consider the fact that a console is backward compatable to be an acceptable excuse for there to be a very large lack of software that was designed to be played with the new hardwares capabilities in mind.

I didn't buy a PS2 to play PS1 games either, nor did I buy one to play DVDs. I have a DVD player and a PS1. Nice features to have but they don't make up for a lack of quality titles that are supposed to be what you bought the console for in the first place.

congratulations.

but didn't you say that you once sold and got rid of like 50 GBA games or something? If that's true, then you made a big mistake IMO. Because GBA games look fucking FANTASTIC on the DS! I've had my DS for about a month already and I *STILL* have not bought ONE DS game. They simply don't interest me. I bought my DS strictly to play GBA games due to how much I hated how they looked on my SP. If I were you I'd rebuy all the GBA games you sold and replay them. You'll appeciate how gorgeous they look once you fire them up on the DS.

Oh, that's a fair enough observation. Others have noted that their GBA games look much nicer on the DS -- it may or may not matter to you.

With that being said -- you wanted a DS BADLY, yet you must have known what was available (or not available, as the case may be) at the time. So how can you be upset that more games aren't available?

Ive actually found that I can control Mario 64 pretty well without much issue at this point. The learning curve was a real bitch however. About the thumbstrap, your completely right. The thing rocks as a control device, but it keeps sliding up to my knuckle or becoming very loose. It seems like every minute or so I have to readjust the damn thing.

As for me, I never had a GBA, so Im currently enjoying its backlog dirt cheap... even without that though the stupid slingshot mini game is enough to get me through any software droughts. I also have a friend that let me borrow Feel the Magic, which is a really fun game but Im gonna wait for Wario Ware. Ive also heard that Ridge Racer DS and Madden DS can be pretty entertaining. Im a bit warry about dropping 40 bucks for software that is average at best however.

If you can't find enough DS games to keep you busy until Wario Ware comes out you aren't looking hard enough.

I'm not even interested in Wario Ware.

I'll wait for reviews because i've heard this iteration leaves something to be desired.

I'm not going to keep myself busy on poor to average titles like Ridge Racer DS, Tiger Woods DS, Madden DS, Spiderman DS, Average Arcade Racer DS, Ping Pals, a demo of a Metroid game that isn't actually Metroid.

Save for that last one, I might spend money out of desperation to have something new at times. Money burns holes in my pockets. Even still I'm not THAT desperate.

I'm not crazy about puzzle games either, they don't click with me. I can never get that involved.

For what it's worth for those of you who import, Daigasso! Band Bros. and Chokkan Hitofude are pretty damn fun. Of course that's assuming that you're into music games and puzzle games (respectively), but they are both great within their genres.

Even though I have more than enough to play on my DS right now (I already beat Mario, but Feel the Magic, Drill Spirits and the other two mentioned above have got a lot of life left), I also can't help but agree with a lot of people complaining about there not being enough software/good software around. Yeah, I guess it's often that way now with system launches, but why? I understand that Nintendo wanted to get the DS out there before the holiday season, but come on. Even if we got Wario at launch as well as localizations of Band Bros. and Hitofude it would have helped immensely. And it would have helped too if they hadn't ripped single-cart multiplayer and a really awesome fourth mode out of the US port of Driller DS.

I really hope that companies are more prepared for the next line of home system launches because all 3 major companies have been working on their next-gen stuff for quite a while.

If it's used, you can only trade it in as store credit. You're kind screwed unless you can make the box look like brand new again. Then there's the problem of making the game look brand new too (since I'm assuming you bought both at the same time). Of course, they'll have your information down, and not many people will have traded them in yet, so you'd be screwing yourself over if anyone ever found out.

As far as the games go, there aren't a whole lot on the horizon, and I'm not a big handheld fan, but Wario Ware Touched, Yoshi's Island II (forgot the real name :P), Advance Wars DS, and Mario Kart DS are supposed to be out before the end of summer, I believe. There are other DS games, but I know about as much as that lineup as I do any other handheld lineup.

Yoshi's Touch and Go. That game looks awesome. Also, don't forget that we will get a unique Zelda DS which is worth 80 times its weight in Gold.

My personal opinion on DS, not that it matters, is that it has so much potential but obviously that potential hasn't come close to being met yet. But it's the launch, and this much is expected. If you don't care about being an early adopter, then just wait until Feb-July. By that time you'll be able to find more than one or two games that interest you, I'm sure.

It's usual for a new console handheld etc its first games to suck. I've seen it on every new console I've bouhgt with the exception of N64. So all you have to do is wait for the great games to come out (and ignore the hateful trolls). Congrats on your buy.

Lemunator, you may have bought a GBA to play GBA games, and so on. But if you don't play AstroBoy Omega Factor on the crisp DS screen you will rot in hell. You've been warned.

I imagine the reason Wario Ware Touched! didn't see U.S. launch was to hold it back to combat the PSP launch, as well as give the other 3rd parties a chance to sell their shoddy software. (Save for FTM and RR)

Fix'd.

But honestly, I don't understand this thinking. By the time March rolls around surely they will have another game that'd be able to combat PSPs launch. Yoshi Touch and Go, perhaps? Something. I don't buy that excuse.

Worst. Pre-System. Research. Ever.

Seriously; I agree with your sentiment of there not being enough post-launch titles. I'm waiting for Advance Wars/Mario Kart until I take the plunge. And, I'm hoping there will be a price drop by the time that happens. The real question is: Unless you can return the system for a full refund, why not just keep it? Like, if I had money to burn (Instead of money to spend on University), I'd buy one right now. But, since I don't, it's not worth it for 1 to 2 games.

Wario Ware Touched! is awesome, assuming you haven't played Wario Ware Twisted! In that case, it's only okay, but thankfully, Touched! is launching before Twisted in the US.

Personally, Touched! hasn't left my DS since Christmas.

And Suerte hasn't left your room since last year.

With all the unique new features the DS has, such as tuoch screen, dual screens, and a mic, the fist six months, as expected, are going to be hell. Developers have to adjust to new game hardware, and with the DS, it isn't just a new system with new specs and new internal guts, but a sytem with whole new INTERFACE methods. It's going to take time for developers to figure it out.

For a game that was made in conjunction with the introduction of the analog stick, I feel that the touchscreen control works surprisingly well with Mario DS. There are actually a couple of things that the thumbstrap does better than the analog stick: running in circles, and sliding down slopes. The latter example gives me hope for excellent controls in driving games. I also find the thumbstrap more comfortable and less likely to loosen if it is not attached to the DS.

No. The first six months suck because Nintendo wanted to hold off on their first part releases. Since Japan has the awesome WarioWare / One Line Puzzle / Pokemon Dash already, this really isn't much of an excuse.

What upcoming DS games don't just use the touch screen for mini-games?

AND DON'T FLAME ME YOU ASSHOLES, I'M SERIOUS. BTW, I consider Ridge Racer and Mario unplayable with the thumbstrap (I got 70 stars in Mario 64 using the digital pad, am I a glutton for punishment or something? It wasn't hard to me...)

I got One Line Puzzle today, and it is awesome. Though there's a mode where you have to clear the whole board with one line and have no time limit, there's also a sorta-Tetris like mode where you are racing against blocks that is much, much more fast-paced than I would have guessed. It's really a great use of the stylus. I haven't played multiplayer yet.

Upcoming? welll...

kirby, animal crossing, yoshi's touch and go, metroid prime hunters, another all do for sure in the immediate future. Most of them will, really.

I got all 150 stars using only the digital pad, so it isn't just you. The one time I tried to use the thumb strap is when I read a sign saying to use it to cross a narrow walkway, and I fell off. Used the digital pad the next time and had no problems crossing.
