Boycotting MW2/Activision by buying it used.. anyone?

I'll probably hire it and give the single player a whirl on a console version. I was planning on getting the PC version but the lack of dedicated servers has certainly changed that.

You will go buy it as soon as you log on and see all your friends playing it and having fun without you. :lol
I think you're underestimating people's contempt for Kotick's business practices.

And of course it won't matter in the long run. Even if every single GAFer were to boycott the game, it wouldn't matter to Activision or IW. But it's the principle of the thing.

It helps to hate Call of Duty and basically everything else Activision publishes. Missing out on a bog standard brown military shooter isn't going to mean much to me.

But, I don't really care about any boycott, especially when it comes to Blizzard games, so that won't stop me from buying their non-WoW games in the future.

The drama is always amusing though, releasing a PC game with just matchmaking is so hilariously stupid. It's the exact opposite of the point of PC gaming.

Ugh.

Your purchase of a used copy will make those harder to find, driving 1 (one) person who would otherwise have bought a used copy to say "Fuck that 5$ price difference, I'm buying a new one now".

An effective boycott involves a non-purchase.

As compared to people's contempt for EB Pawnstop's business practices?

I like the idea of sticking it to Activision, but giving your money to Gamestop instead is just as bad.

Not mine. If I buy it from another person instead of a store.

Plus I don't really care if anyone else buys it new. If you want to give money to that greasball Kotick be my guest. Reward them with your money. I will not be doing the same.

:lol holy shit I just caught up with this.

No dedicated servers? What the fuck?

I was mildly interested in this because CoD4 gave me several hours of online joy, but when your CM of the game is spewing nonsense with "much more accessible to the PC community as a whole" in terms of peer-to-peer connections, it's making the purchase of this game an absolute joke. Take Activision's cock out of your mouth Infinity Ward, you've jumped ship before and you can do it again.

:lol nice boycott

Hai guys, lets boycott one mega huge crooked company Activision and give our money to another mega huge crooked corporation Gamestop.........THAT'LL teach em

all this does is screw over infinity ward, the guys who made the awesome game.

so buying used is great for the industry, except when it's a product that you want to take a spineless, half assed moral stance against.

if you buy this game and you claim to give a two penny shit about pc gaming, you're a scab. and when the industry has completed its transition into the ultimate low expectation, big wallet culture of prescribed, blinkered experiences with a constant flow of extraneous yet mandatory content; served up on a platter of avatar clothing and gouged accesories, where every single facet of your gaming experience is 100% controlled and manipulated to extract every last live point from your account- you'll know you did your bit.

It still baffles me that so many people have never experienced the wonders of a dedicated server. The community that surrounds one great server with specialized maplists and other fun modifications. Match-Making seems so unpersonal.

That other person might have traded it in or sold to someone else if not to you. You're taking a copy out of the used market either way.

The used market competes with the market for new copies. Less used copies in circulation means used copies rise in price and new copies become relatively more attractive.

Don't worry about me, I'm not buying it at all, but not out of spite for Activision (though Kotick is a prick, no doubt).

Was slightly interested in MW2 and might have bought it but IW/Activision are throwing their weight around a little too much recently.

Not buying full stop.

Which is why I'm advocating to do neither.

Bu..bu..but didn't you get the memo? We're being told that this is for the "good of the PC community!"

There's really no point in boycotting something this huge. Activision's still gonna sell 15 million+ copies, you're not hurting them much at all.
Can't win; don't try. Got it.

I don't buy from Gamestop. And like IW isn't getting paid because a small minority of the people are not buying it new :lol . This game will sell millions regardless. I just don't want to give Activision my money. Is that really hard to understand or do people just not read the OP/thread before they post?

So did you buy all of those Guitar Heros you've played used too?

Actually yes :lol .

I bought Rock Band 2 new though ;).

Exactly. Why vote? There's millions of other people out there who'll do it regardless, just stay home.

I'm not boycotting it (I think something like that is silly, sorry!), but I'm definitely not buying it new at £45. Fuck that. I'm sure you'll be able to get it at £40 at launch somewhere, probably Tesco, but that's still too much.

Seeing as I got COD4 day 1 for £32, Uncharted 2 for £30 and KZ2 Collector's Edition for £33 it just seems like a rip off. I'll rent it for the SP. MP I'll just wait, and seeing as I really liked COD4 MP but only put about 37 hours into it before getting bored, it's not that big a draw for me, I can wait.

oh Seiken... are you going to play this game for 100 hours straight also? :lol :lol
That was actually the plans :lol But before that, another 100 hours on Tekken 6!

Yes, I'll do the same. I know it doesn't do much/anything but it makes me feel better. :)

MW2 and L4D2 are both on my list. I know it doesn't make any difference but at least i'll know i'm not supports the practices of these companies.

I was going to do that, but I ended up buying it off Argos UK for like £27 lol. Otherwise I would have bought it used. But yea, forget Activision lately. Like they wont be making enough profit on this title that they need to charge more than everyone else.

Yeah, I'm going the purely puritanical route of buying it used, but from amazon marketplace or craigslist where none of the money goes to Activision OR gamestop.

You're doing it wrong.

Boycotting L4D2 is wrong because Valve is tubular and we love them. Plus, boycotts are fucking retarded!

Boycott Activision because we hate them and they are greedy and Kotick is a meanie! And boycotts are the only voice the little man has, they're great!

if you're playing the game, you're not boycotting it.

when you play matchmaking, you're helping them.

1) you help by p2p hosting the game

2) you help by increasing the player base for matchmaking

it doesn't matter if you buy it new, used, rent, or even if you stole it.

there aint so thing as half-way boycott.

I dislike Activision as much as most people, but I don't see why boycotting one of the few products they make that I actually want can be seen as a good idea. You have to support the quality out there, regardless of the source.

Besides, I see it as supporting Infinity Ward more than anything.

I'm not getting it until it drops in price.
And that won't be for a long time so I guess you could call that a boycott of sorts.

Whatever then I'm not "boycotting" it, I'm just buying it used. Anyone else doing the same?

Damn some of you guys.. I just don't want to give my money to Activision, how am I spending money on them by playing it?

Don't hold your breath. Even COD4 is still full steal-price everywhere.

I'll buy it used because that's all the campaign is worth to me, but it will also feel nice totally sticking it to that Kotick prick I guess

Except i guess you missed the point where people feel that Infinity Ward has screwed the PC community so thats why they are boycotting MW2 because its a half assed made that way just so the users can be charged for map packs.

I'm almost convinced ghst is a Shawn Elliott alt. :lol
