Activision confirms: No career in THPS4

How are these games compared to skate? Are they more like thps1+2?

I hated thps1 and 2 remake. It was basically a score fest and required too fast twitch gameplay. I don't have time for being 100% precises and perfect with combos and chains. It was hard to pull off a complete run.

The best thing about THPS4 was the game's difficulty, it upped the challenge for people go took the games more seriously. People complained about the difficulty when it came out and after that they never push the envelope again. My only hope is that they can increase the difficulty in the goals they make for the THPS4 levels.

Only fucking nerds enjoyed the career mode back then..

It’s like reading the playboy for the interviews🤣
What other way is there to play THPS4?

You literally dont know what you're talking about dude.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

The career mode is how you unlock the other levels and upgrade your skater.

I honestly don’t even remember THPS4… I couldn’t tell you one single map from it.

I watched a couple quick vids on the career mode, and it honestly looks like a slog to me.

…wait, I just watched a bit more and it’s actually starting to grow on me. Did I just not play this game back in the day? I feel like I would’ve loved this.

What makes it annoying is there is no autosave, so after completed goal you are prompted to save and thats really annoying.

It does seem like it suffers from some early 2000s game design jank, but that’s pretty normal. I might give this a go on GameCube later today and see how I like it.

Also, did they actually get the real skaters to do their VO lines, or are those just random actors?

The open world career mode was the defining feature of THPS4. They are either going to delay it to add it in or regret they didn't if it releases with 2 min runs like the first 3. Open world quest design is a pretty big feature to leave out and expect players to just live with it.

4 is really good actually. I also have it on Gamecube but I just emulate it with Dolphin, it looks quite decent. Pretty sure they got all the real voices.

What tf is going on in this thread? The defence force on full display for cut content and a remake that is inferior to the original. Bizarre.

Yeah its quite sad. There's this weird Defence Force on Reddit too where people say "we should be thankful this is even what were getting"

Yeah I have to be thankful the billion dollar company cant be bothered to remake a 25 year old game, with cut corners. Oh thank the Activison/Ms overlords for this corporate slop

While they have the tools and Manpower to do it right, they will fully choose to deceive the fanbase (their website still states "everything from the original games returns!")

Pretty stupid move. This went from a day one purchase to maybe when it's $30 or less. THPS3 is my favorite in the series and while I don't love 4, it's defining feature was the ability to roam and pick up goals and events from NPCs. I also assume this means that the random activities like tennis or the carnival target shooting will be gone as well.

Maybe it would have a higher Metacritic average than THPS3 if it utilized the tow minute format.
Just no. Comparing meta scores that high is useless. If you liked 4, you liked that they made THPS like GTA in that game. If you didn't like the game, I understand, but that was the main difference between 4 and the earlier games.

If the game is like TPS1/2 Remastered then the games aren't separate and feel like compilation of the two in one game.
If this is the case then removing that type of campaign from 4 to streamline it with 3 which is probably easier then the other way around.
In fact with that in mind I actually understand why they scrapped it.

In an ideal world, it would have probably made more since to have 1-3 in one package and 4-THUG2 in another.

Didn't think ahead did they..then again, not the same devs either.

Doesn't this have multiple development teams attached to it? It might have ended up a totally different product had the project not initially shelved.
To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if higher ups said no to 3 being included so they could get more money out of it.

1-2 was quality work and I don't remember too many people being bothered by standardization of the newer combo linking mechanics being included. Three just fits better with 1-2 with the challenges being based around that arcade-like two minute timer. I was more referring to this package which I believe was started by the team that brought us 1-2HD and was seemingly scrapped, only to be reborn and completed by a different dev team.

Yeah that's what I mean, the OG Devs probably did have it planned out like that and some suit said no.

Not really, I’m assuming the older ones of us prefer the original campaign style so it doesn’t bother us and definitely not a deal breaker. 1-3 where my bible 4 I barely played at all and can’t remember f all about it.

I would rather they have both modes to appease those who did like it however.

To be honest I don't remember much of 4 apart from the bad voice overs and I never got THUG which pretty much sums it up as the series died off after that.

Yeah you might be around the same age as me I did drop off gaming then as I was getting older and into that ‘age’ of more partying etc but 4 did nothing for me.

All I remember to me at the time is the graphics seemed worse because it seemed to cluttered or crammed or they were trying to squeeze to much from the system. Probably played great on PS2 but didn’t have one of those for a long time.

Well, some of the challenges in four had more aggressive time limits so it will be interesting to see how those are handled. You could do some of the single combo challenges in a a two-minute window so those could work, but I'm guessing it will all be reworked to fit the typical checklists found in 1-3. Like you said, both modes would have been preferable and the disappointment is understandable.

THPS4 is my favorite in the series. This just went from a Day 1 Buy to Deep Deep Sale. Fuck off, Activision. You were shit with Bobby Kotick, and you are still shit without Bobby Kotick.

I would been 20 when that came out, I did play it on the PS2 but something was off with it and I lost interest with the series after that.
Obviously I jumped on the Remasters because they was games I enjoyed so it wasn't franchise fatigue or anything, I just wasn't feeling the new direction.
So to me this maybe a blessing in disguise but to those that grew up loving that TPS4...it sucks.
And going by this thread.. while some liked it, some hated it too.

Having been replaying thps 4 on my Odin 2, this is a massive disappointment. Litterally losing the identity of the game here. Good thing this is a gamepass game.

Good read, glad I wasn’t remembering incorrectly with the bland art style of that game think it was just asking to much of the 1 with the open world.

Another video posted in the thread touching on THPS4 and the dislikes. I think on here it comes down to an age bracket thing, if you grew up on 4 like people grew up on 1 it’s probably much more relatable and your favourite.

Lighten up, Francis. I'm sure it won't be a half-assed product, if THPS 1+2 is any indication. Nothing to lose our minds over.
Bro deleting the entire campaign and removing all the content and turning it into 2 minute runs with 'streamlined' goals is a half assed product, no matter how you look at it.

Lighten up francis?

Why don't you stop capping for a billion dollar company man.

Some of you really love to sip the corporate Koolaid, its absolutely pathetic.

By the way Im 38 and like I said THPS2 is my absolute favorite, but they are just doing this game dirty. And straight up lying on their website and deceiving their fanbase.

Losing your mind over? The fanbase is voicing it's opinion. And paying more than 1+2 for a mediocre half assed cash grab, early access bullshit, characters locked behind a paywall that were previously unlockables.. It's fucking laughable dude. And you weirdo's defending Activision in all this is even more hilarious but also sad at the same time.

If you're ready to eat the corporate slop then by all means, but no need to tell others to 'calm down' or 'lighten up'. How pathetic

Awfully mad about this mate wasting to much energy on it, just don’t buy it or waste any money on it vote with your wallet.

There’s no other way to do THUG titles down the line anyway if that’s some light.

What? Removing the entire open world structure is the only way to do THUG titles?

They shouldn't (and won't) even bother with that. And nobody would even be interested in that. Just like most people who wanted to replay 4 aren't interested in just the map packs. The maps aren't neccesarily what makes THPS4 so good. It's how those maps were filled up with interesting content.

I'm more mad about people defending this type of shit and telling me I should "lighten up".

I've been playing the games since 99, I don't think that's a fair assessment of why people would like the game.I recently played through the first six games and 4 is the only one that still gave me some challenge. I honestly believe the biggest issue is that 4 is not really the best game for casual Tony hawk fans. If you are a die-hard Tony hawk fan , 4 is going to give the biggest challenge. If you're a casual fan you're probably not going to get the most out of the game.

cash grabbing fools. Not buying your dodgy remaster if you're going to purposefully purge content from the original games and charge full whack for it. Get out of here.

This thread is bizarre. Like, at the end of the day, whether you liked the mode or not is kind of irrelevant. Losing a core feature in a remaster should always be looked down upon. Especially one that doesn't require online features (since those are usually the ones we lose for fairly understandable reasons).

Anyone defending this move has lost the plot.

I’m not defending it, I’m just not losing my mind over it. I get it and understand, if THPS4 was one of your favorites in the series I’d be disappointed, too. TBH, after 3 I didn’t play the series as much because I didn’t like the direction 4 took the franchise. That’s me though.

I will say this, however. For everyone saying they ripped out content, but are charging full price. That’s not exactly true. I get it, many of you think I’m defending Activision, but that’s not the case. I will point out, though, that there’s two games packaged here (or 1.5 depending on how you look at it), you’re not paying full price for a stripped down THPS 4 remaster.

50 bucks for these two games doesn’t seem unreasonable to me. I’m not looking forward to it as much as 1+2 when it dropped, but it should bring back some fond memories. But for me, I’m looking more forward to replaying THPS3 than anything.

For fans of THPS 4, I get the disappointment.

I hated thps1 and 2 remake. It was basically a score fest and required too fast twitch gameplay. I don't have time for being 100% precises and perfect with combos and chains. It was hard to pull off a complete run.
I loved Skate 1-3 (especially 2) the intros, the skate culture, easy to pull off tricks with the thumb stick. The smoothness of it. The crashing physics. Setting up your own stunts and jumps in real time with filming them. The 90s and 2000s era music. Open world, buying new clothes , wheels, boards, trucks, etc..

Really wish skate got a remake instead. EA is a pos though and they will just turn that series into always online gaas with micros and modern crap music.

lol if you thought the entire run long never touching the ground combos in 1&2 were bad, 3 leans into it even more.

I've played the beta of skate, it's Not Good.
Session is the only thing close to skate, and it's a great simulator but very dry and lacks the soul that the skate games had.
