Brad Shoemaker Leaves GameSpot

Oh shit. Here's hoping Ricardo is next to leave. RIP Gamespot, way to fuck yourself up.

the best ending to 1upyours is still "Thanks for paying for this podcast...oh wait, you didnt because its free, just like any good online service should be. This is Shane Bettenhausen signing off...Playstation 3"
What episode was this? I really want to hear that.

As a once huge fan of Gamespot, it's sad to see these guys all leave, but I suppose it's for the best. As long as he brings his incredibly manly voice to another podcast, I'm fine.

Is there anyone else even left at Gamespot?

Reading your post seems to show that you still go to Gamespot. Are you aware that you are part of the problem?

Also yeah, the 1UP Yours song has me mindfucked too. That and the EGM Live* song; whenever I hear those anywhere else (and they're both free GarageBand songs) I have to pull a double-take. :(

That guy was great. I remember remixing one of his Dynasty Warriors (PSP) reviews, where he mentions it's similar to the console counterpat over ten times in a row. :lol

Nah, I quit that place after Gerstmanngate (however the fuck you spell it) and even then I only frequently visited after Rich Gallup left. I'm loving Giant Bomb though.

How I miss his eyebrow. :(

Sir I just noticed what your username is, and I would just like you to know that I now have a serious mancrush on you.

Wow this thread sure has been derailed :x

I am sorry to say that the feeling isn't mutual. However, I am willing to accept your mancrush and meet it with kind indifference/friendship.

:D

Skip, are you on Garageband right now? I keep hearing these different musical snippets... sounds like a mixture of Yanni and John Tesh. :lol J/K

BTW, if we are at Steff's I'll have a Glenlivet neat

Now we're getting somewhere.

For a second, I thought about letting you know you always have a couch to crash on, but it wouldn't be the same without DaveZ here. Or you escaping to Che's house a couple times a week.

I'm sure Gamespot/CNET don't even give it a shit. They've probably got a list of 100's of unemployed 20-something geeks out in California with Eng/Lit/Journo degree's that would jump at the chance to get paid to write publisher approved reviews.

It's pretty remarkable that Gamespot's traffic has not been affected at all by the whole episode. Not even a blip.

CNET management is probably feeling pretty damn good about themselves.

sadly, yes. Maybe not the last part, but they'll find replacements. Most people who go to gamespot don't even look at the name on the review or preview, or whatever.

Damn, there's full blown in-party up in this thread. :) 'Sup former GameSpotters. Best of luck with Giant Bomb, Ryan (and anyone else that may be on their way). Looking forward to the Bomb being my primary bookmark for gaming. Is Jeff on GAF?

I don't think it's the mainstream they're feeling. I'm willing to bet they've lost a significant portion of their subscribers, though, and a good amount of their primary fanbase.

It's probably just been offset by an increase in casual readership. But those casual readers don't put money directly into CNet coffers the way subscribers do. They've lost my subscription, at the very least.

Ha ha! His name sounds like a job!

Methinks Gamespot is done, finished, kaput. I haven't seen such a mass exodus of staff since the zdnet days.

there are a limitless number of people they can hire who can write in semi-average prose for next to no money. the people who know reviewers by name or are even aware of gerstmanngate represent a fraction of GS's traffic.

Brad on either 1up or GiantBomb would be great.

And skip, 1upYours is great. Listened to every episode since summer 2006. Its part of my weekend dude, seriously. I luv crazy Garnett.

That may be true, but it certainly is a trend that more interactive content (blogs, podcasts, video reviews) is getting more important in gaming journalism every day, and for this content, recognizable personalities are incredibly important.

The average Gamespot reader doesn't know or care about these writers. Last I checked, Gamespot's traffic has actually increased since Gerstgate.

CheapyD is right about this one.

No, the average GS user knows about the editors. Unlike most sites(i.e. IGN) GS makes their editors extremely known, whether it be through their ton of video features or podcasts. I remember visiting the site a few time about 5 years back when I first heard about it and it was pretty easy to know who the editors were.

Not to mention that GS attracts a more hardcore fanbase than a casual one.

I like that Gerstmann and Davis have made Giant Bomb now.. but I don't know if it's able to maintain itself. It's.. a single, small room where both of them just update a blog. I don't know how long that can maintain without.. well, more people.
The site has yet to be completed. The blog is simply a preview of what is to come. They will add additional staff and create a full blown site. They've stated time and again that this is only a tip of the iceberg.

Personally, I'm enjoying their writing more than ever as it has an "unchained" feel to it. I feel as if their opinions are completely valid when reading a review or impressions.

So far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I hope that their experience will allow them to see it through. I mean, if this were just a couple random guys (such as the two Screw Attack fellows who are now divided) I wouldn't have much faith, but these guys have been doing gaming journalism for years now. I think they can do it.

Thats expected. 99% of the gamers out there don't care about Gerstmanngate.

What they want is a big site that covers a lot of games, Gamespot fills that need.

And to those saying people knew the editors at GS better then at other sites it doesn't matter. Knowing them isn't the same as caring about who actually is the editor. Most people actually like when theres new people to manage the content at a site, regardless of the way that happens.

I have a maddening obsession with 1UP Yours. All year I've been listening to every episode on loop. I've been incorporating the styles of speaking into my own personality. Much like seeing Tetris blocks when you close your eyes i at times can hear the voices of the cast. I have a massive vocab list i built from the show with words like "DoucheLord" and "Extrafelous". I've also been meaning to throw together my own highlights reel and sending it to Skip.

Definitely the greatest audio program in the history of the universe.
