GameSpot: How Nintendo Won The Console War

I wouldn't say Nintendo won the console war as Playstation is about equally as successful. But they certainly won the exclusive war as they are the only one left providing regular quality content for their own platform that isn't available on other platforms.

If gaming makes $200B/year and a company makes $30B it has more market share than other one that makes $10B.

SIE makes more profit than Nintendo since a few years ago despite having spent more in acquisitions, despite spending more money making hardware, despite spending more money on making a bigger amount and more expensive first party games, despite signing more deals with third parties for their console, despite spending more on signing 3rd party games for their gamesub and despite mantaining a cloud gaming platform.

The important metric is revenue and not so much profit because if they make $30B they can decide if they keep them sitting in the bank as profits or if they reinvest them in things like the ones mentioned above.

And for a company is better to make $30B and reinvest $27B keeping $3B as profit than to make $10B and reinvest $7B keeping $3B as profit. Because in the future thes $27B will generate more money than the $7B. That's why normally the main KPI to check the performance and market share is revenue and not profit.

Apple, MS, Google do a lot of money outside gaming. But in gaming the market leader is Sony, the top grossing company (even if only counting SIE and not the gaming business they have in other divisions).

I think we are talking about two different things.

I'm talking about popularity and awareness while you are talking about business size and market share of Sony gaming Vs Nintendo gaming in the total market of console gaming.

It's two different things.

According to who? To you? Just because you personally don't like them doesn't make them "subpar".
The same applies if I invert the idea, Just because you like them, that doesn't make them "great"

Many have pointed out the flaws on those games, but people play deaf and dumb.

Thats how opinion and taste works, for example I think Witcher 3 has worse combat in any RPG and yet there are people who still like it anyway because thats their taste.

ALL games have flaws, you cant find games that will everyone happy.

Your "facts" = personal butthurt.

And you even own a Switch 2? Why buy the "subpar crap" Switch 2 if it looks/sounds/play like shit?

Your wallet voted HARDER than your seethe

Hehehe yeah right!

I own a SW2. Because I like to form an opinion from trying the actual games, and playing them.
I don't state opinions from watching you tube videos either. If I am saying they are subpar it's because I have played them, When I watched the first MP4 trailer and the gameplay from gamescon, the game looked dated and fugly, I played the whole game and I got confirmation that the game is shit!
The fans forgive a lot of bullshit from Nintendo and that is fine, but don't expect everybody to play ball with you guys.
Nintendo games are expensive for what they offer. Some may say, their super exclusive fun sauce that only Nintendo knows is what is all about. Maybe for you, but what is fun for you is not fun for everyone else.
Nintendo games play super safe. No good stories, I wonder if they do motion capture, I wouldn't dare to think they do performance capture. Same old characters. There was a time when Nintendo was pushing the envelope those days are gone.
Nintendo games are outdated technically on several fronts.
Those are facts. If you want to play dumb and not acknowledge those, you are fooling nobody but yourself.

As a consumer, that's what interests me.

I dunno what's with the "winner take all" mentality. Nintendo and Sony are both doing great in the market. I'm trying to think if there is another industry that is quite like this.

So true. Why is it so hard for them to understand that both Sony and Nintendo won?

A lot of fans and websites like the one in the OP will get the $hits once Nintendo increases the price of the Switch 2 in a couple of months, meltdowns will be glorious.

But no meltdowns from PlayStation and PC fanboys when (not if) their prices will increase?
The PS5 has received 2 price increases in the US, about the same in Europe and 3 in Japan. PC parts usually go up or down depending on many factors.

Do you reckon PS and PC Players will go nuts when the price increases hit them the same way as Nintendo players ?

Prices going up is a problem only when you're the only one raising them. But they won't be so not a big deal at all.

This is news?

Robin Williams What Year Is It GIF

Its been like this since 2006. With a short gap of total failure from 2012 thru 2016.

15 years of backdoor tech dominance. Nintendo has been winning folks. Not a surprise. Even during the failure years they still sold over 80 million consoles total with the 3DS WiiU combo. But I don't think anyone will ever reach the Wii/DS era. 250 million systems sold in what… 7 years?

PSP and ps2 had 240 million and vastly better. The wii was kinect level system meaning it was total fad and sucked.

You think Nintendo is for kids, but you bought a Switch 2, You thought Metroid Prime 4 looked "dated and fugly" but you paid $70 for it and beat it? Nah.

Learn to do math.

PS2 was released in 2000. PSP was released in 2004. Even cutting you a break and giving you 9 years, the PSP had apparently sold 50 million units worldwide by the beginning 2009.

Source

160 million PS2s (bullshit *cough*) +
50 million PSPs

= 210 (?) million in 9 years

DS + Wii 2004 thru 2012 8 years
250 million

Wii was great. DS was great. PS2 was great. PSP was cool. No need to be a hater.

Don't see that happening. Nintendo needs to increase the consolebase as fast as possible to get their software out in large quantities. They'd rather take a hit on hardware than damaging their bread and butter (software) long therm.

We've already seen that with the 3DS.

I never got the impression Nintendo has wanted to fight the console war since the Wii

They purposely got out of fighting a war for hardware specs with Sony and (then) Microsoft because they knew they couldn't win

Everything after that has been Nintendo carving out their own market and largely ignoring anything the other 2 were doing

The downfall of Xbox is being gaslighted as the downfall of consoles so hard is not even bait anymore. We get it, Microsoft, nobody is buying that. Good luck with your Magnus PC with copilot.
