Warbreaker and Words of Radiance spoiler:

Really looking forward to seeing what Zahel/Vasher has been up to since the end of Warbreaker. Hopefully we get elaboration on what happened to the princess travelling with him and how he lost Nightblood

Referring to the one big thing. I'm sure there's other stuff, but again, I hated Warbreaker so I have no desire to go back and reread it just to pick up on connections.

Nah, no need to reread it. The other big thing is mentioned right in the Clegg's spoiler post above this. :)

One other thing I really want to see in one of the Stormlight novels is what caused the Knights Radiant to throw away their vows. Did they learn of the Heralds abandonment?

Now that I've finished The Hero of Ages(the ending was so good!), I can't decide what to read next. It's down to Elantris or Alloy of Law right now. Is Elantris very important in the grand scheme of things, or can it be safely moved to the back of the pile?

Elantris is Elantris, it is its own thing. That said, there's some stuff relating to it elsewhere, nothing major though. May be fun to notice those things though.

Elantris is generally held to be Sanderson's worst Cosmere book though, it is after all the first one he got published and it shows.
It does have its good points though. Like Hrathren (or however it was spelled). Damn great character.

Just finished Shadow of Self and after work I'm picking up Bands of Sorrow. What can I say, the books are fantastic. I haven't read the first Mistborn books yet, but I like the fact that i can go back and get the origin of all these gods from Wax and Wayne books, I'm extremely excited to get through it all. He just builds a fleshed out world and lore, and the powers are badass. Wax and Wayne are also some of my favorite characters ever, how has this stuff not been made into movies or tv?

I also got a chance to listen to The Rithmatist book, and wow, I must say his ability to think up these super original powers blows me away. I'm pretty much addicted to his books now.

EDIT: doh! i called the next book Bands of Sorrow I meant Bands of Mourning. Just started reading it and I'm hooked again.

Elantris is worth reading even if only because it's the first entry in the world in which The Emperor's Soul novella takes place (which is awesome).

Elantris is fine, and there will be sequels, but if you're all gung-ho on Mistborn right now, go right into Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, and Bands of Mourning (and then Secret History).

Finally finished Bands of Mourning and went right into, and finished, Secret History.

So much info! And as usual... There's always another secret. Sanderson could write 100 books in the cosmere in his time on this earth and I convinced there will still be more secrets that he was unable to share with us!

Random quick thoughts:

#TeamSteris wins

Can't wait to see how he connects the end of Secret History with where we left Kelsier and Spook. And what he has planned for Kelsier in general.

Mentions of Threnody and Taldain in Secret History were unexpected, and we finally get introduced to Nazh.

It's interesting how differently the Cognitive Realm is represented in Mistborn vs Stormlight. I wonder if this is a function of investiture present in the worlds/people who inhabit it. Maybe not the worlds as Kelsier seemingly crossed to another shard world through the Cognitive Realm when he sought out the Ire. I should revisit SA and see if I can ferret out anything there even if it's just a flub in how I perceived the two.

Gonna have to poke around 17th Shard tomorrow and see what people have been talking about post BOM and SH.

I just finished Secret Histories and holy moly it was amazing.

With respect to your spoilers
Can you remind me who Threnody and Taldain and Nazh are and where they're from?

I feel like I recognize Nazh as one of the Worldhoppers in Way of Kings during the Lake interlude, am I off? Don't recognize the other two.

And is Khriss from someone too?

And is Khriss from someone too?

Threnody is the world where Shadows for Silence in the Forest of Hell takes place.

Nazh is the person who is making the maps shown in Stormlight Archive.

Khriss was the woman who danced with and questioned Wax about his use of Allomancy at the party in New Seran.

Some of the following is information by way of Brandon Sanderson Q&A's and in yet to be published material so I feel that warrants an EXTRA spoiler warning just in case:

Taldain is the world where the upcoming White Sand graphic novel takes place.

Khriss also appears to be the person writing the Ars Arcanum. This may have been confirmed by Sanderson, I'm not certain, but even if not this would have been my interpretation now that she's been properly introduced.

You can actually get a copy of the White Sand novel free from Sanderson by emailing his team through the contact form on his site. At this point in his career he and his team are pretty busy though and it might be a LOOOONG time before you receive a reply. I haven't done this myself, as I'm fine waiting for the officially published work to get the "final canonized" version of the story, if you will.

Started Warbreaker when this thread was posted and I'm about halfway through now. I'm really digging it. My first Sanderson. I can see myself digging into this whole universe thing.

Warbteaker doesn't seem to get a lot of love but I actually really enjoyed it!

I think in general people really like Warbreaker, it just doesn't get a lot of discussion because it was a one-off published years ago. Mistborn and Stormlight get the love because of the massive amount of material and the ongoing narrative. Granted at least one sequel is in the offing but even Sanderson doesn't talk about it much.

God damn Bands of Mourning was great. Loved everything about it. What a great ride. Hell of a lot of revaluations too. Intriguing cliffhanger.

On to Secret History....

BOM, WoR, serious spoilers:

I wonder if the nicrosil bands will allow people to piggy back other investiture systems?

I wonder if all the alkali metals can use investiture or if it's a specific one? Do different alkali metals do different things?

Would the feruchemical materials for surgebinding be available on Scadriel or just Roshar?

1) I wonder about that. How exactly it works is still a bit of a mystery.

2) Alkali metals? In Metallic Arts, only specific metals and their very specific alloys can be used. And the metals' physical properties have little to do with their uses. Consider silver and gold, the latter has use but the former does not, despite both being similar chemically.
Whether the metals used in Metallic Arts have any use in other magics of Cosmere is unknown, except Aluminium, which is immune to Investiture of any kind. In Allomancy, Aluminium is a Focus for "purifying"/"anti-magical" form of Investiture.

3) I'm not sure what's the question is here. Surgebinding does not use metals as Focuses, so there's no real interaction between Feruchemy and Surgebinding. Well, aside from what Investiture may do.

2)
The metals that the southern people use, that explode when they hit water are obviously alkali metals. They somehow can be used as a medium to burn metal which is how the ship makes itself lighter.

3)
Yeah but if you have a nicrosil feruchemical band and a band made of the physical representation of stormlight, does that grant you surges?? Which surges does it give you? Do you need a specific gemstone for specific surges?

Surges are gained from the Nahel Bond, which is a bond between a Spren and a human. Surges can be emulated with those fabrials they use on Roshar but those use Spren and Stormlight - which is a form of Investiture- as their power source. I would imagine Nicrosil could be used to convert existing Feruchemical Charge to Investiture which could be used to power a fabrial.

2)
Total fail on my part. I kept thinking the bomb-metal was probably some reactive metal but i couldn't remember a single metal that actually does that. Let alone figure out what they'd have to do with Metallic Arts. I will have to read the relevant parts again... I did read the book on one sitting so i missed a great deal probably, or forgot.
There's something odd about them though how could a reactive metal be used for a bomb that blows up a city? Or at least damages one. I suspect there's more to it...

Well Secret History is definitely supposed to be read last after everything else...... It's essential.

52% through it.

All done with Secret History. Warbreaker and Emperors Soul are next.

Going deep into the Cosmere. Probably be looking to reread Stormlight at that point.

Secret History certainly revealed some stuff. Curious to see what he's talking about in the afterword....

I really enjoyed the first mistborn trilogy, but I haven't really heard much hype about the alloy of law. What's the consensus on the second trilogy?

FYI, Mistborn Era 2 will actually be 4 books total. Occasionally referred to as a standalone (Alloy of Law) plus a trilogy, but functionally it's a tetralogy. I only point this out because people have missed that we still have one more Wax and Wayne book to go!

And it's been fantastic.

I've liked each book of the second series even more than the previous. If the original mistborn is still fresh in your memory, jump in they're great! The second and third relate a lot more to the old books than Alloy, though I read those when they came out so a lot of the specifics were a bit fuzzy to me.

Alloy of Law is OK but then the stakes keep getting higher and the books keep getting better. BoM was a joy to read. I'm not the biggest fan of Wax compared to Vin/Elend but the supporting cast is great.

So I should probably read the rest of the second trilogy before diving into Secret History? Still got 2 books to go..

So no cover art yet, but I stumbled across this on Amazon:

Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection Hardcover – November 8, 2016
416 pages

I want this.

Also:

Brandon Sanderson's White Sand Volume 1 Hardcover Hardcover – June 21, 2016
144 pages for Vol. 1

A brand new saga of magic and adventure by #1 New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson.

On the planet of Taldain, the legendary Sand Masters harness arcane powers to manipulate sand in spectacular ways. But when they are slaughtered in a sinister conspiracy, the weakest of their number, Kenton, believes himself to be the only survivor. With enemies closing in on all sides, Kenton forges an unlikely partnership with Khriss -- a mysterious Darksider who hides secrets of her own.

White Sand brings to life a crucial, unpublished part of Brandon Sanderson’s sprawling Cosmere universe. The story has been adapted by Rik Hoskin (Mercy Thompson), with art by Julius Gopez and colors by Ross Campbell. Employing powerful imagery and Sanderson’s celebrated approach to magical systems, White Sand is a spectacular new saga for lovers of fantasy and adventure.

How many books is he putting out this year?

I'm only about 150 pages into Bands of Mourning and I'm finding that Steris is a much better character than i gave her credit for. Maybe because she was less fleshed out before I'm appreciating her more and more as she kind of shows more of herself. Like she's the one character we're getting a slower reveal as opposed to Wax, Wayne and Marasi. I also like the evolution of her and Wax's relationship, not so much that love is there but there is a nice mutual appreciation for each other.

Yeah she was woefully under characterised in Alloy, with some of her charm coming through in Shadows. She's really come into her own in Bands, she's probably my favourite of the gang.

Her scene on the train is amazing!

Sweet, they're including some cool swag with the Calamity signed pre-orders.

Calamity-Signed-Prepack-300x300.jpg

As a sweetener, and to give the books a proper send-off, we’ve whipped up some very cool goodies for the release. Right now, if you preorder from various bookstores listed below, you’ll get a preorder goodie pack. The showpiece of this is a short graphic novel we whipped up, based on Mitosis, the story that takes place between books one and two. This is my first graphic story (though it’s only 12 pages), and it looks fantastic. The only way to get it is to preorder from these specific stores.

Also included are several punch-out figure cards, like we’ve done for previous books. These ones star David, Prof, and Megan. You also get pins from the books! Basically, the goodie packs are awesome. As a note, however, supplies will be limited—and there might be a cutoff date to when you can preorder and still get one of these. So call ahead to the store you’ve chosen, and make sure you get on the list.

Best way to ensure one is to order one of the 250 copies on Sanderson's web store that are being fulfilled by Weller Book Works.

Ok so I'm about 10-15% into The Way of Kings and I don't get what the big deal is about this book? It started getting a little interesting with the bridgecrew but not much. Does it open up?

It didn't grab me until the 'hunt' which I think is about 1/3rd through, but once it did it sure as hell didn't let go!

Way of Kings takes off about a quarter of the way through. Get back to us after you finish the book. "Kaladin, why do you fight?" at the end gave me chills. Such an amazing conclusion to that book.

First half of the first book is almost all world building. I still loved it, but the second half really goes places. Second book has great pacing throughout. I think it's definitely something he's gotten better with the last few years.

Takes off like a rocket soon.

I was right where you are.

I guess I had a different opinion than some others; I didn't think Way of Kings got good until about half way through.

Still worth it though, especially since the second book, and thus presumably the future books, were good right from the start.

Stormlight Archives is as epic as epic fantasy will get. It's going to have a different pacing than most books people are probably used to.

That being said, after all the initial set up and world building, it does pick up and never let go. As someone said, I believe that is at the hunt as well.
