Brandon Sanderson - The Cosmere |OT| there's always another secret...

Just finished reading Warbreaker. I finished Words of Radience a few months ago. I know there is a connection between them, but I have no idea what it is--probably becaise I read them in the "wrong" order.

Should I look up the connection, or should I leave it as a secret to discover whenever I decode to re-read WoR, probably about 5+ years from now? Or, is there a specific chapter from WoR that I should re-read now--a chapter that I would see in a new light?

I have absolutely no idea what the connection is or how extensive it is, so yeah.

Just started Bands of Mourning. I never really thought I would read the Wax and Wayne books, but they are actually great! Though Wayne annoys me a bit sometimes, the character might have been taken too far.

It's just a couple of little things that you'll chuckle at. Just look it up.

I love Wayne as a compainion to Max, but I really dislike when we get chapters narrated from his viewpoint. It's kind of odd... I guess that, I feel he works better as a character when we have some distance from him.

Disclaimer: I'm yet to read Bands of Mourning.

Wayne has a very... particular logic that I can see become tiring primarily because his chapters seem to be very focused on his thought process rather than the PoV style that Wax (or other Sanderson characters) get.

But if you can get past that.. try to enjoy the variety of logic that Wayne presents. Maybe it's just me but it's pretty entertaining learning the intricacies of Wayne's logic.

If you want to see for yourself, re-read WoR chapters 18 and 88.

Okay, so I finished Hero of Ages today and now I"m wondering where I go next. Consensus seems to say either Elantris or Warbreaker. Optionally I guess I could read the next Mistborn novel, but since it is 200 years after HoA I am wary of missing cruicial Cosmere details.

If you want to keep Mistborn world details fresh.. just go right into Wax and Wayne's stories.

If you want to take a break from Mistborn.. then I'd say flip a coin with Elantris and Warbreaker. Neither are among Sanderson's stronger works but they're both entertaining enough with each providing some interesting Cosmere-relevant tidbits.

Honestly, it's really best to put the Cosmere to the back of your mind when choosing which Sanderson series to start up. Nothing is so connected or important to the enjoyment of the next series that you'll screw something up by reading out of order. The only thing to really worry about at this point in time is reading books in the right order within a series. And that's only tricky with Secret History and that's solved by just reading it after all the mainline Mistborn books currently released.

Yeah, I would go with the rest of the Mistborn series if you want to keep the world still in mind. I've forgotten a bunch of stuff because it's been a few years since I've read the original Mistborn books (catching up to the rest now).

If you're planning on getting into The Stormlight Archive, I suggest this reading order for maximum Cosmere-ness (!!): The Way of Kings, Warbreaker, Words of Radiance.

IMO, there are no crucial Cosmere details until you get to Secret History [and for that, you need to read Wax&Wayne adventures all up to Bands of Mourning]. Just go and read whatever you like and don't be afraid you will miss something big. Everything except Secret History is just promoting small stuff about Cosmere [Stormlight has some good stuff, but noting groundbreaking].

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll move onto the other Mistborn books because yes, it's fresh and I loved the trilogy.

I'd held off on reading Alloy after the Way of Kings books for some reason but finally dipped in to check it out. Pretty good, so far, a bit over halfway through. Wax and Wayne are great. Steris is the absolute worst and Marasi is a'ight.

Finished up Shadows of Self last night.

I read Allow of Law like the week after it came out and apparently forgot nearly everything about it, and as a result the beginning half of Shadows of Self was confusing to say the least.

The story was good. The middle portion dragged on, but the last 100 or so pages were legitimately great. I was just about falling asleep in bed reading until
TenSoon showed up. What a boss
. From then on it was fantastic. Also, the reveal that
Lessie was a Kandra the entire time
was pretty good. I really enjoyed the mentions of the old cast from the OT, and the way the religions are forming/have formed in the universe now is pretty interesting. Not to mention when they go to some of the locations from the old books. Quick little nods that were just awesome.

Going to read something else for now, but I'll jump into Bands of Mourning soon enough.

All I see is a convert in the making. #TeamSteris

Definitely grew on me throughout Shadows of Self, that's for sure. And from what I've read in this thread and elsewhere, she gets even better in Bands of Mourning. Right?

I'm open minded. I'm just saying that if the first impression we're supposed to get is that she is literally the worst ever then Sanderson succeeded brilliantly.

I'll just say this, as any more would be going into spoiler territory. We all know Sanderson loves to subvert expectations. It's one of the things he does best, and it's one of the big reasons we all love his work. Also, Steris does make a very bad first impression, and that is definitely a big and intentional part of her character.

Oh cool, it looks like Sanderson is doing a signing and a talk at a local bookstore next week. I'll have to take a trip out there to check it out. I'm not very far into his works though, so the only thing that's making me a bit worried is that spoilers might be flying around from either him or the Q and A session. Decisions, decisions.

Almost forgot that Calamity comes out tomorrow. Completely insane given how Bands of Mourning only just came out too.

I'm probably too late, but I would go to Warbreaker next. The new Mistborn books work best if you've spent some time away from the world first, IMO, so that the callbacks feel... is nostalgic the right word? I think it is.

As for why Warbreaker over Elantris, well, it doesn't matter that much but I think Warbreaker is a much better story. Also more relevant to The Cosmere.

There's a (very) short writeup at the end of the new Mistborn novels that will make more sense if you've read the other series first.

Yeah it says on amazon it's out on the 18th here in the UK, but a bookstore broke the release date here. Was surprised when i saw it on the shelves 3 days ago and promptly purchased it.

I just finished Warbreaker. What a ride that was. I fell in love with it from the very first chapter, and there were some characters I fell in love with (Lightsong being one of them).

I'd like to thank the people who suggested it. I just bought a hardcover copy and it's going in my collection of books I love. Now back onto the Stormlight archive book 2.

I finished Alloy of Law last night, and really enjoyed it. It's fun seeing the effects of the first trilogy on the society, religion, etc. It was also nice to read something relatively short!

I'm going to dive into Shadows of Self tonight.

Went to the Calamity signing in Seattle last night. Super long line, but Sanderson stuck it out like a champ. Event started at 7, I didn't get out until 11:30ish; no way he was through until after midnight.

And he had some great Q&A. Not sure if this was known, but (potential Mistborn series spoilers)
Q: Did the Lord Ruler have any children? A: Yes, next question (completely matter-of-fact as half the crowd gasps).

After finishing Secret History I
searched all the references in Hero of Ages.

Man, when Sanderson says he plans everything ahead he doesn't lie.

Just got to the part in Alloy of Law where Wax crushed
the entire building. And apparently Steris was aroused by the situation? Damn girl you into some kinky stuff.

IIRC he broke this on a Reddit AMA some months ago. Cracked everyone's head open then, love that it's still doing the same when people find out.

I have a feeling he's gonna be RAFOing follow up questions on that subject for years!

I was planning on holding off on Secret History until after I'd read Stormlight, but now that I've finished Bands of Mourning... shit. I might just have to buy it now. The implications of that ending are wild.

Yep, do it now. Best read immediately after Bands. Besides, it's short you'll be ready to move on to Stormlight in no time.

Anyone reading Calamity?
I've finished Part 1 and then some and I'm really lukewarm towards it. I loved Firefight, but the things that happened so far are quite boring.

Beginning Spoiler:
I dislike every conversation with Knighthawk, also where was the awesome takedown of an Epic as the first sequence? The drones were lame.

After Part I Spoiler:
Quite meh on the City of Salt aswell. Prof as a villain is also pretty tame so far.. he's just a regular badguy who wants to Takeover territory.. meh

Am I the only one feeling like this? I read Band of Mourning and Secret History almost right before and I loved them. I do notice a drop of quality (especially characters) in Calamity.. Hm.. Hope it picks up. Can't wait to see how the trilogy wraps up.

It gets better. It's doesn't reach the heights of any of the Second Era Mistborn books though imo.
