Owners, players reach handshake deal to end lockout

The NBA and the Players Association have reached a tentative agreement to end the five-month old lockout and start the season on December 25, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

After 16 hours of negotiations Friday night, the two sides reached a handshake agreement a little after 3 a.m., a source said.

Both sides must still get final vote approval from all owners and players to finalize the agreement

NBA Commissioner David Stern is holding a joint news conference with Players Association executive director Billy Hunter and Players Association president Derek Fisher(notes) at 3:40 AM in New York.

As someone who doesn't follow American sports what are lock outs exactly? It sounds so crazy stopping an entire season over, what? Pay? They get an insane amount already.

I'm sorry, but what is the NBA?

Hehehe. Sorry. I just don't watch the NBA. Good for the fans though. I seriously can't remember the last time I watched an NBA game... very difficult for me to get into. Maybe it just requires me to be a sports bar or something with a beer. We'll see.

no, that would be a strike if youre talking about the players not playing because they want to be paid more

a lockout is when the owners of the business stop their employees from working because they want to pay them less

Ah ok. It still seems strange. Like in Australia if the AFL just stopped a season people would be going nuts. The government would probably try and make them start playing again. And that happened with your football too, didn't it? So bizarre.

No, the federal courts ruled that the NFL imposed lockout was legal.

look at this layman

what it ruled was that due to some specific american act whose name i forget, federal courts are prevented from enjoining lockouts

that means that the injunction that the players sought failed, and once it failed they decided fuck a further court case we want money so they took the crappy deal

it didnt mean that, had the battle gone further in the courts, the lockout would have been upheld as legal

Millionaires disputing the ownership of millions, especially in this economic climate, isn't gonna ingratiate you to loyal, or prospective fans alike. I'd like to think there'll be a drop at the gate, and in viewership, but who knows.

Everything from what I read around that time stated that the ruling was vacated because Judge Nelson ignored several federal laws. Don't shoot the messenger.

yeah thats literally the law he ignored

the court that struck down his decision never even ruled on anything other than the injunction

and yeah im just being a dick lol

As much as I hate the NBA for what they did to Seattle, that picture is beyond amazing.

Agree on Seattle, great basketball city.

Heat, Eagles, Yankees: what's the common theme? Money can't buy you love, baby.

Bosh is downy soft, LBJ is a regular season smasher and a playoff dasher, and Wade can't do it by himself.

2012 NBA Champion? Chicago Bulls

This was probably Dirk's doing.

Hurray, the rich people have reached an agreement with the even more rich people.

Only half-joking...

Being a casual NBA fan, I really havent missed it at all. I've just been submersed moreso than usual into football. Once football season is over I might have.

I'm seeing this on espn.. Are they hinting at a hard cap... !!!!??

The sides offered few specifics, but NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said big-spending teams will have a more difficult time obtaining free agents because of the punitive luxury taxes.
“It will largely prevent the high-spending teams from competing in the free agent market the way they have in the past," Silver said. "The luxury tax is harsher than it was in the last deal, and we hope it’s effective and will give fans in each community hope that they will compete for a championship."

small market teams ftw
