Breath of Fire IV releases on GOG.com

There was a PC version of this game released back in the day? How'd I miss that? That is cool GoG re-released the game. Maybe a Breath of Fire collection will follow later on down the road.

I still have never played it and i LOVE 1-3, with 3 being my most favorite. I know a lot of people put IV at the top of their list too. Damn, i gotta play it, this is great.

It appears to have been a Japan/European only release. I was also surprised as I thought GoG might have gotten into console emulation.

Word of warning - looks like the visual fidelity's worse than the PS1 original. From my understanding, the game looks about on par with the original PC release but is notably worse than the PS1.

Below are a couple screenshots from Dragnier, which compares the PS1 and original PC release, and below that I've included a couple more screenshots I took. The fault seems to be with bilinear filtering: It's smoothing over textures in the environment and on sprites and leaving that cheap-looking black outline around sprites. Also, Capcom replaced some of the fonts with jarring HD alternatives (that are only sometimes applied; why?! this is reminiscient of the FF Pixel Remaster fiasco only 20+ years before it):

Unfortunately there are no real video options in this release (unsurprisingly; it's budget). Dragnier suggests using a program to enforce point-filtering, and the comparison screenshots they show (same webpage that I linked to) are a substantial improvement. Don't know what to do about the shitty HD font though.

Dang, the font is.....

I'm seeing a lot of talk about this today on Twitter.

Hopefully more people become aware of GOG as a result of this release.

GOG really needs to get more attention. It's the best thing to happen to digital distribution for video games.

the sprites look worse but I honestly prefer the filtering on the textures.

it could do with more options, but this is a PC release so we all know modders will come by to do their job

So now there's a modern way to play 1 and 2 (via Switch NSO) and 4 (via GoG). No 3 though...
To be fair these are all easy to emulate and BoF 3 has a PSP version with better graphics.

Proper emulation for all of these will produce better results vs PC version.

Thanks for this post - I've been curious how the PC version actually stacks up. I'm wondering if tinkering with the DirectX settings in the GOG version would improve things - that worked wonders in getting the RE games looking clean.

Though, considering this was a 2003 release and was from the same batch of PC ports as Dino Crisis 2 and Mega Man X5 (both of which had this issue), this might just be what we're stuck with.

So yeah, I think it's great that GOG brought this one back from the dead, but I suspect the PS1 version is still the best way to play it by far.

Just update to the newest version and you now have the option to use Point Blank to get crisp visuals, I think the HD font is better.

1.0 hotfix4 changelog:
  • Fixed audio engine inaccurate panning (noticeable in the opening cutscene).
1.0 hotfix3 changelog:
  • Fixed higher than expected CPU utilization (thanks Xeshra for the feedback).
1.0 hotfix2 changelog:
  • Added a PSX-like graphics option with the newly available "Point sampled" texture filtering to make the gorgeous pixel art stand out even more. The "Bilinear" texture filtering option has also been implemented.

I owned this on ps3 (and the first 2 on my snes mini), but never played them Is this game standalone or do I need to play the others first?

Playing suikoden again and now playing Lunar silver star story for thr first time has got me pumped for more classic jrpgs.

Also a fair point. Heroic keeps all the 3rd party stuff together. Nice and easy
Nice and easy yeah right. It freezes on anything larger than a few gig. And now it won't load sync anything. It's bad. I am afraid to mess with it as I have heroes of might and magic 3 installed and I don't want to mess that up. Steams version of homm3 is the ubisoft HD version that is missing the expansions.
