Bundles of Awesome - The Official WiiWare Discussion Thread

So what control methods are available for Metal Slug? I was disappointed that the Metal Slug Anthology didn't have Classic Controller support.

I think that Pirates game and Pop will be available on Friday.

I'm hoping they get added at midnight like last week. Maybe it was a one off Tuesday thing, maybe not!

Ed: And what time are they updating the Points Card shop these days - I've only managed to nab 2 100 pointers since Wii Ware launched!

Sweet Marli, I suck too much at Dr. Mario! Never played it before and so much hype and positive things being said about the game made me get it as I love me some puzzle games, but I didn't know I would have my ass handed so easily by those viruses.

The problem is that I've been playing Puyo puyo clones for years now, and I'm having difficulties in shaking off the strategies I use in those because at first Dr. Mario seems slightly similar. No need to say that having a deep Puyo Puyo mindset is completely useless when playing this.

I've watched the tutorial and played some rounds, but as the speed went up I was like (∂_∂). I'll watch Soul Eater and try again later with a more open mind.

I've been playing Dr. Mario since the NES original, and I still have to play it on Slow. On Medium I can barely make it past round 5 to see the special cutscene (which is completely different in this version, and sadly lacks the original song from that part as well.)

So far Virus Busters feels a bit easier to me, maybe just because there's a smaller playfield.

I'm happy to see they fixed the Fever music in the main game though... the last version I played (GBA) used a very watered down remix of it.

And for those too lazy to actually use an irc client. I think Blizzard said in the brawl thread this should work as well:

http://www.globalgamers.net/?p=webchat
use gaf_sb as the channel name.

And I hear of this chatzilla thing working as well in which to get to us you would type "/server irc.globalgamers.net" and then "/join #gaf_sb".

And this is a direct link to the web base version:

http://irc.netsplit.de/webchat/?net=GlobalGamers&room=#GAF_SB
just type in your nick and you're set.

Pretty sure you can get on through pidgin as well if you happen to use that already.

edit: Direct link url fixed to go straight to it.

Toki Tori hasn't even been mentioned for a US release yet, technically. I don't understand why the blame falls on NoA? Also, the game has been out FOR A WEEK.

I can't believe how impatient you all are.
I guess you missed the day it was ANNOUNCED?
Toki Tori will be Two Tribes' first venture into console development. The game is slated to launch alongside WiiWare on May 12, with European and Australian launches pending the launch of Nintendo's digital distribution service in those regions.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6189071.html?sid=6189071&part=rss&subj=6189071
While the game is readied for release with the American launch of the WiiWare service, Two Tribes says that the availability of the game across Europe and Australia "will depend on the roll-out of WiiWare in those territories."
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18208
When WiiWare comes out in North America on May 12th, a new installment of Toki Tori will be on the Wii Shopping Channel.
http://www.siliconera.com/2008/04/10/toki-tori-hatches-for-na-wiiware-launch/
The game will be made available on the WiiWare platform's North American launch, scheduled for a May 12 roll-out.

So everyone was just fucking wrong? Is that what you're telling me? :\

I don't see why this can't be launched in NA, it's available in English already. There's no reason for Two Tribes to hold it back.

Alright alright..you got me. Everyone was wrong just like how it was announced a slew of other games would be available at launch that weren't. I will reiterate that patience is a good thing. I think you'll live.

Ok, swallowed my pride and started playing on low and level 0 instead of the default med speed + level 10, let's see how I fare. :lol

Well that's exactly why I'm upset about it, this is obviously NoA's doing, they said them-selves that they want the US line-up to be more spread out compared to other regions. The game is already available in English, so I can't see why Two Tribes them-selves would hold it back.

Edit: Plus all you asked was when was Toki Tori announced for US release. Those 4 sources not only indicate that it was due for NA release, but they all thought that it was going to be released here before it was released in EU.

I've been following the game since all those announcements, so I'd say I've been more than patient waiting for it.

Is it just me or have Nintendo not uploaded any titles for Europe?

Why would they? It seems that the VC/WiiWare releases are going to be going ahead on the traditional VC day, so we should expect our next batch of WiiWare titles this Thursday/Friday.

Nothing... not yet :(
I think that until tomorrow Nintendo bring Pirates and Pop to europe...

I expected them at midnight, but I was busy playing Zack & Wiki as the clock rolled over and they still aren't here.

Guess the Tue launch was either a one off, and they are now moving to Fri or we aren't getting weekly updates.

So I went to check the Dr. Mario online thing, just to see how many blocks it would take up. I was kinda toying with the idea of buying it since $10 for a game I can play on the Game Boy but online seems pretty fucking steep. So I hit the back button, except the back button was actually "download now"

Shit.

i'm trying to decide whether my desire to purchase dr. mario is greater than my desire not to delete even more vc games from my console.

then again i could delete lost winds,

lost winds: i've never seen a game with so little content

I have to say, Family Table Tennis is better than I expected. (Disclaimer: I was going to buy it regardless of how it turned out, mind you, just because I support downloadable gaming, I support $5 price points, I support cel-shaded graphics, and I support anime art.) Real brief rundown:

1) The control blows Wii Play table tennis out of the water. Actually, that comparison doesn't quite do it justice. I had better control over where the ball went within five minutes of playing than I've achieved in Wii Sports tennis after whatever number of hours. I haven't played Rockstar's table tennis game, but compared to Wii Play and Wii Sports (and the rather abominable table tennis in Mario & Sonic), this is far and away the closest that a motion control tennis game has come to making me feel as in control of the ball as I would with a D-pad and buttons.

Now, I say it took five minutes to understand, which is true. One pivotal thing to understand is that the characters on screen always swing with their right hand and there isn't much if any graphical difference between swinging backhanded or not--but it'll definitely be reflected in the arc of the ball. If I swing backhanded with my right hand, the ball moves to the right; if I hit a forehand shot, it'll move to the left. (Timing has influence on this too.) And vice versa for my left hand. But this should be the only element of Family Table Tennis that isn't immediately understandable.

2) Unlike Wii Sports tennis, your shot types only vary by speed and direction--you don't have lobs, spin, or more complex elements like that. For this reason, don't buy this game for a single-player experience; you'd be setting yourself up for disappointment. It's reflex-based gaming in the purest sense, with little depth, and I would say it's definitely, definitely meant for competition.

3) Another thing: this game is much faster-paced than the tennis in Wii Sports. In that game of tennis, I can play with either hand no problem (or even both hands, if I feel like it) and there's next to no visible difference in my level of ability, but in Family Table Tennis I'm not quite reflexive enough with my left hand to manage it as well. That said, this game can wear out an arm pretty quick, so watch out for that. :P

4) The music appeals to me in its cheesy, upbeat kind of way; I like it more than I thought I would. Character voice clips are in Japanese or something that just sounds suspiciously similar; lots of "Yosh" and "Yatta" being thrown around, or at least I think that's what they're supposed to be saying.

5) Cel-shading is the way to go on Wii. Even for retail games.

6) With all this said, I would still say that Adventures of Lolo, Bubble Bobble, Kirby's Adventure, Legend of Zelda, River City Ransom, Star Tropics, and Super Mario Bros are more enjoyable uses of 500 Wii Points. But if your intention is to supporting developers by supporting their new games, then obviously Family Table Tennis would be one way to lean.

7) Arc System Works did a nice job, and ultimately I'm left wondering where they'll go from here (aside from making more Guilty Gear games, of course). I suppose that's one of the stronger pieces of praise I could give, particularly for such a "small" game.

Wow, very nice and very thorough. Makes me proud that I bought this title. Sadly, i have not had a chance to play it with other people yet, but I can only image how much competitive fun it is. As you were saying, multiplayer is where it really shines. If it supported nintendo Wi-Fi connection, it would have been an even better deal. As you said, and I agree with you, Cel shading IS the definitive way to roll on the Wii platform. The replays could use some work, but nonetheless, it is a good and fun little title.

I spent some four hours playing FF:CC:MLAK last night... that game is pretty damn addictive, even though the gameplay may be repeatitive and there's not all that much to do... at least not at this stage.

Is there like a release schedule for the DLC?

Got today:
-Dr. Mario Online RX
-Family Table Tennis

All great in their respective categories, extra points to Famility Table tennis for being so cheap ($5) aand looking so great and being fun and simple too).

So far, have for WiiWare:

-My Life as a King: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
-Star Soldier R
-Dr. Mario Online RX

No idea... I think the DLC features come up later on the game (I'm at chapter II, day 42 at the moment, if I remember correctly)

Two strange things about the game:
1) The thief quild building - the guy keeps saying that I am the only customer, even though many of my adventurers visit that place every morning

2) I can't find sword metal from this level 2 dungeon, even though my guys are > level 10. They flee or get their asses kicked and fail to complete the task...

Yeah, unlike puyo-puyo everything is about straight lines of like-colored blocks. It's OK to set a wrong colored pill on a virus as long as you do so with the intent of clearing it away later. Just build chains even if they're empty clears, and by that I mean always try to get a string of same-colored blocks to fall off the side... or both sides!

BTW, Virus Buster is pretty fun two-handed. :D

Do you actually read the reports the next day? There can be some pretty tough creatures even in a level 2 dungeon.

1. I think he'll only say something different whhen an adventurer is in the building with you at the same time. Haven't tried it out though. The Battle skills building works that way, though.
2. Look at the reports. IIRC that boss was pretty harsh, Level 40 or something like that. There's also a bunch of roaming Lvl25+ monsters nearby that sometime come over.

Ok, thanks. I haven't read all the reports, and now that I think about it, that's the first thing I should have done when my people kept getting their asses handed to them :lol

But the guild building, I tried entering the building at the same time, but it didn't change anything. Maybe it's just that building...

Man, it's been too long since I last played Dr. Mario. Just wiped the floor with two random internet people, although one match early on was close... cleared my final virus just as the other person set the fourth block on his. :D

I looked at the list of games and some videos. It looks like Lost Winds is the game to get. It it any good?

Definitely, it's so serene and relaxing and mixes Metroid-esque exploration with a really judicious use of the Wii Remote. It's short, sure, but it's well worth checking out.

I believe that when questing for materials (be it sword metal or something else) for level X items, the enemies will be around level X, NOT the level of the dungeon.

I'm a bit surprised Dr. Mario doesn't support 4 player battle mode, like Dr. Mario 64 and the Nintendo Puzzle Collection port both did.

I concur, i'm a huge fan of the Knytt games and as soon as I got my hands on LostWinds I felt the same way I do when I play an awesome Knytt level for the first time, I just want to explore everything - especially when the setting and music are so compelling, as with LostWinds. It may be short, but i've seen alot of people saying they completed the game in little over 2 hours, whereas it took me a good 4 and a half hours playing it in short bursts and exploring to find all the idols, I guess the game is what you make of it - I certainly enjoyed it, can't wait for the second one.

That puppet just standing there is a bit of a downer. You're supposed to mimic its motions, right? Get pumping to the beats? I can see why the puppet breaking out into dance might confuse the player, but as it is it looks a bit too... static, for a lack of a better word. Ah well, it's still in development, isn't it? It has time to improve.

That looks horrible, and I don't mean the visuals. Mimicking a robot throwing punches at me isn't my idea of fun.

And that quote about the Wii not being able to handle this game because of the CPU is crap. The Harahuri game is exactly the same thing (mimicing on screen motions), and it looks a million times better and has 3 or 4 player gameplay.

No kidding. Just finished over 30 matches playing against a japanese person. Can't say I dominated exactly, but I did win 4:1. :D

Now that I got my way around the gameplay I can't stop playing Dr. Mario. Played many hours straight, is it supposed to be this addictive? I though that after MLaaK my soul would be free, but it looks like WiiWare will be the death of me.

Thanks for the tips. After that post I lowered the speed/level instead of starting on med/level 10 and now I'm being able to play it naturally. :)

Try to get to the point where you can practice on Level 20/Low. :D

Speaking of Puyo Puyo, I hope Sega have a online wii ware version planned eventually (after they've done Chu Chu rocket of course).

Darn, that does look good, great cel shading. I'm not a fan of that anime in the slightest but that's gonna sell by the truck loads and unlike previous Harahuri games, actually appears to have gameplay!

Defend Your Castle tidbit. I was looking at the credits today and noticed SMB3W4. I wondered if this was a person's online handle or a weird reference to Super Mario Bros. 3 World 4. It seems to be the latter. Putting SMB3W4 into Google I get very few results, but most of them are about this YouTube video. It's an easter egg where things are giant, as in SMB3 world 4. Anyone know how to make this happen?
So I brought this up at the XGen Forums. Turns out the solution is just to click on SMB3W4 when viewing the credits. It's on the second or third page of Special Thanks.

They add WiiWare and VC games on Friday. Last week was the launch of WiiWare, that's why we got games on Tuesday and no games on Friday.
