Bungie says ‘notable number of PS5 players are playing the PS4 version of Destiny 2 on their current-generation console’

We just have to accept that we have a segment of the population(especially in the U.S) who just don't have the mental compacity to do basic things anymore without the most extreme of hand holding. And it's continuing to grow over time at a rapid pace.

It’s true, I had three friends I introduced to the game that had no idea they were running the PS4 version. Wasn’t until we got the crucible and they couldn’t find the 120 FPS setting.
Ton of friends run PS4 versions of games without knowing. They re-download the PS5 version once I’ve told them, and usually instruct them on how to do it. Hard to argue with smart delivery when I see that shit so often.
We're they using disc or did they download it?

What are you shown when you put a disc in? I have only ever put one disc in my PS5, CP2077. When I did it automatically downloaded and installed both the PS4 and PS5 versions. When I deleted the PS4 version the PS5 would automatically install it again. It was annoying. Hopefully they fxed that.
I have only ever downloaded digitally on ps5, so I can't honestly speak on what happens with a disc.

Except every time i have to download a crossgen title the PS5 always asks me which version i want to install.

If people don't know the 5 comes right after 4 then maybe that's not on Sony, but it's just me.
If it were that simple then there wouldn’t be a large number of people who have the ps4 version downloaded instead. Fact of the matter is, it should be more intuitive for people and it isn’t. So yeah, it’s Sony’s issue.

I dont understand why Sony doesn't just read the ID of the machine and download the ps5 version by default, putting up a small icon saying click here if you prefer the ps4 version. How hard could it be?

Sadly it is not. I believe it is the same for other PS5 disc games. Insert the PS5 disc version of the game. I get 2 downloads. I delete the PS4 version. Play the game. Eject the disc to play something else. Insert the disc again to play the game. The PS4 version pop up as a download that I had to delete again. Every time. Again, it is just bizarre that this hasn’t been patched, unless it is something weird related to my country store that make it does that even though I don’t have to go to the store as it is the disc version. Or maybe the country version of the disc. I just don’t know.

That is weird. Hopefully they get that fixed before the slim gets released.

And most of them are on a 1080p or even 720p TV they bought on Black Friday for $100.

720TV's are rare in stores these days, sometimes you may find them boxed on shelves if they are 32inch or less, maybe 40, but those are usually where they put the 1080's these days.

Best Buy and Walmart have done a good job removing their 720p supply.

offering to download a PS4 app when the a native PS5 app is available is incredibly stupid and this is Sony’s fault. It is obvious that this issue has already been pointed out for years, so they must have some pretty bad dependencies that would make efactoring that part of the store a pain in the ass, so they leave it like that.

As a developer, I understand why they would prefer not to touch it, as a consumer, fuck this shit.

What game in particular are you having this issue with?

I haven't had any issues like that when using a PS5 disc. The issue is definitely there with PS4 game discs, where people upgrade via the upgrade voucher. With the PSN store, as the poster you are responding to is saying, you get presented with both options and you choose which you want to install. Not saying this is ideal. It can definitely be better.

If what you are saying is in relation to a PS5 disc, then I wonder if it just that particular disc and how the system recognizes it?

"super confusing". Yeah, there are two versions one labeled PS4 and one labeled PS5. One needs a math degree to sort this mess out.

On a more serious note, you should be able to download the version you like, you shouldn't be locked to a specific version if there are two available. It's not worth losing the option for the people that have 2 brain cells. They wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway, let them be happy in their ignorance.

Agreed.

I support the idea of choice as let the consumer decide. Lots of logical reasons exist why someone would want to actually play one version over the other.

Its even more odd that anyone would even consider this "confusing", are some of you really telling me you don't understand 5 comes after 4 or? lol Are some of you serious? You don't need some new tech do tell you a fucking 5 represents the PS5 after the PS4, this is a level of slow like those that sued McDonalds as if they didn't know fast food made them fat.

Shit, if only we had some way of the company solving this for us, wouldn't want to use them brainz...

Many games have two versions right now. They can't hide the PS4 version from existing on the PS4 as the system is backwards compatible. They need to focus on improving the workflow for playing a game that has been upgraded by the player.

The system is doing what it is suppose to do....play the PS4 version from the PS4 disc and if that version isn't found install it. The logic there needs to change.

Preach, just preach. It's quite scary.

There's a lot of things that Sony SHOULD do. Their UI is crap, but the question is WHY is it crap.

These people aren't oblivious, so my thinking is that there is a disconnect.

The PS5 UI feels significantly worse than the PS4 UI (imo). This is the problem when you decide to entirely revamp a UI instead of iterate on it.

This should be fairly easy and simple given the evolution PlayStation over the years.

Compare XMB to what we have now and it is just overly engineered garbage with fewer features... The hardware is advancing but the software isn't.

Huh. For all the PR bullshit that floated around launch, it honestly surprises me that it's Xbox's "Smart Delivery" that turned out to be kind of not bullshit. I honestly never thought this could be a problem and kind of wrote off "Smart Delivery" as non-sense. Yet, here we are. Strange times.

tbh, this is sony fault, i mean yea people should be smarter, but sony should have done a lil better on the version issue. Its pretty embarrassing

Yep, It's pretty dumb that I have to choose what version to install on my PS5. I have a PS5. Of course I want that version. One should have to go way out of their way to even install the PS4 version.

I love to have the possibility to select wich version I want to download, sometimes I play the ps4 version to use my DS4s, to do some trophy hunting or to play right from my USB HDD saving SSD space. I find it very useful.

I like that you can do either but it should opt for the best version. There are some games that the PS4 version was better on PS5? Elden ring or cyberpunk I think not sure.

Edit add: this is a video game fan message board, not every average consumer would know what we do, but they should still get the best experience for what they pay for/use.

Are you an expert in everything in life? Not likely neither am I. People know and are better at different things. I went to college and have a good job, that doesn't make me better than someone that went to trade school and is an expert electrician, I can't do what they do either

Guilty Gear Strive kept installing the PS4 version by default when I switched to PS5. I caught it before playing but it's definitely a link to work out. FFXIV is also super confusing because there are like 5 or 6 editions in the drop down to choose from but you can only play the version you are licensed for.

Horizon Forbidden West PS5 version/disc.
That's odd. If you had upgraded to the PS5 version and purchased the PS4 version then the issue you are describing matches what everyone else is saying. I haven't heard of it happening with a PS5 disc game.

I mean, it doesn't do that on mine.

I don't get this argument. When you buy a cross-gen title, the first option you get after checkout is to download the PS5 version, and it's the only version that gets this dedicated download button during the purchase process. And then when you download the game from your library, you're first being taken to a separate screen that lets you choose between versions.

You'd really have to be a brainlet to somehow accidentally download the PS4 version at this point.

To this day whenever I put my original Ghost of Tsushima PS4 disc into my PS5 (after purchasing the PS5 upgrade) it tries to install the PS4 version. If I restart the system with the disc in... it tries to install the PS4 version...

After 2 years of using both I do think I'd judge the Microsoft solution to be superior. I'd judge the Sony approach as "shoulder shrug".

The same thing happens to me so annoying and alot of the times the icon looks exactly the same too.

Not joking here, but that's me.
The house I live in was fully furnished, so TV's not mine. Old LG from early 2010s. Not a smart TV. 1080p only and only 2 hdmi ports.

Since I got my PS5, I've only beaten two games on it. Both are PS4 games :D Maneater and Days Gone.
